  • Patrick O'Brian 1914-2000
(Has also written under the pseudonym Richard Patrick Russ) Irish novelist, short story writer, translator, nonfiction writer, and biographer. The following entry presents an overview of O'Brian's career through 2000.
    INTRODUCTION
O'Brian is a noted scholar and biographer, however, it is his historical fiction novels that have garnered him the most critical and popular attention. While the genre of historical fiction has been ignored by some literary critics, several reviewers have argued that O'Brian transcends the genre with his extensive knowledge of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century naval life, botany, history, and music. His Aubrey/Maturin series of novels, set during the Napoleonic Wars, combined his historical expertise with tightly-constructed adventure narratives. The series is comprised of twenty novels and spans over thirty years of writing, beginning with Master and Commander (1969) and concluding with Blue at the Mizzen
    Biographical Information
    Major Works
O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series of historical novels traces the relationship between Captain Jack Aubrey, a naval officer, and Stephen Maturin, a naturalist, doctor, and occasional spy for Great Britain, as they adventure across the high seas during the Napoleonic Wars. The two characters have contrasting personalities whose differences play off each other throughout the series. Jack Aubrey is an accomplished sailor and confident leader of his crew, but on land, his skills are limited and he lacks social refinement. Maturin has difficulties adjusting to life at sea, but he is suave, diplomatic, and intelligent when on land. The first novel

    Patrick O'Brian Weekend
Our very successful Patrick O'Brian weekend was held on 31st August - 2nd September 2007. Although our numbers were not as good this year, the feedback we have received from those who attended ranged from "Excellent" to "Very, Very Excellent", to the "weekend far surpassed our expectations". We celebrated O'Brian's achievement with a special weekend for devotees of his work - and anyone interested in the Navy he depicted.  The weekend included leading speakers, including O'Brian's stepson, Count Nikolai Tolstoy, a concert, and a water tour, while the highlight was the rare privilege of dinner on the lower gun deck of HMS Victory, Nelson's flagship. The lecture programme was: From Quarterdeck to Paperback: Jack Aubrey and the frigate commanders of the Great Wars. Dr Tom Wareham (Curator, Museum in Docklands) By management and a portion of good luck: the true story of naval intelligence in the Mediterranean 1803-1805 Dr Colin White (Director, Royal Naval Museum) Patrick O'Brian: the Novelist - Count Nikolai Tolstoy (author and Patrick O'Brian's stepson) Illustrating Naval History - Mr Geoff Hunt (President, Royal Society of Marine Artists)

    Patrick O'Brian's Last
As much as he created Stephen Maturin and Jack Aubrey, Patrick O'Brian invented himself. Since his death four years ago in Dublin, O'Brian and his biography have been exposed as fiction every bit as inventive and complex as the written stories he composed. Turns out, he wasn't Irish, he abandoned his first wife and family before the Second World War, and he wasn't named O'Brian. Now, according to a story by BBC News , it turns out that O'Brian may have exagerrated his nautical experience as well: It appears that the man who wrote so brilliantly and so accurately about naval warfare and life aboard ship during the Napoleonic wars did not actually know how to sail. The claim is made in an article by a wealthy American businessman called Tom Perkins in the current edition of the sailing magazine Yachting World.

Listen Don't call me Ishmael. Like Melville's character, I did feel called to the sea, but I'm afraid I won't be shipping out anytime soon. When I was a lad, books like Captains Courageous and Two Years Before the Mast, The Sea Wolf and later, Moby Dick, all gave me dreams of being a sailor. But after several Channel crossings and a sailing weekend on Lake Superior, I've found I don't have the stomach for it. It seems I'll have to keep my sailing adventures to the printed page, and the silver screen. Fortunately, a writer-friend of mine, Kij Johnson, loaned me a copy of Master and Commander by Patrick O'Brian, and I joined the club devoted to "the best writer you never heard of" (as Kenneth Ringle called him in The Washington Post With Peter Weir's new movie "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" opening on November 14th, I expect the audience for O'Brian will be growing. I could go on for pages singing the praises of O'Brian's prose, the depth and humanity of his characters, his incredibly rich language, the texture of his historical settings, and, of course, all of the sailing lore. Others have done this better before me, however.

The author of the wildly popular 18th century seagoing saga created, out of his own life, a fiction nearly as elaborate. By Ian Williams Pages 1 W hen Patrick O'Brian died in Dublin early in the new year, not long after the publication of "Blue at the Mizzen," many of his readers were not only bereft, but also agog at the possibility that he may have left another novel laid down on the stocks. His avid readership spans oceans, classes and politics, from right to left, from Charlton Heston to Tom Stoppard. The long, discursive saga of Jack Aubrey, the British naval officer and Stephen Maturin, his surgeon-spy companion, takes readers into a fictional universe that covers the globe, yet is usually contracted into the claustrophobic wooden walls of a Royal Navy ship in the war against Napoleon. O'Brian's fans declare that his work will live forever, but perhaps the most fascinating reading will be his own life story, which he had crafted as a fiction believed almost to the end by most reviewers and readers. Working as an honored guest at Trinity College, Dublin, for the last two years, he was recently awarded an honorary doctorate as a credit to Irish letters despite the fact that he'd adopted his name and his nom de plume, Patrick O'Brian, along with his Irishness, with no great claim to either. O'Brian was born Richard Patrick Russ in Chalfont St. Peter, Buckinghamshire, England, in 1914. His father was a venereologist and his grandfather a German furrier. His birth year, the start of World War I, may have been one reason why he didn't want to advertise his German ancestry too much after all, even the British Royal family changed its name from Battenberg to Mountbatten at that time to hide its Teutonic antecedents. The family was prone to feuds, and O'Brian eventually broke off relations with his siblings, as indeed later he did with his own son.

    Linking "which" in Patrick O'Brian
Because the movie "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" opens today, at least in this part of the world, I'm starting a small series of posts about linguistic aspects of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey-Maturin novels. (The movie's name combines the titles of the first and tenth books in the series, on the two sides of the colon I'm not sure what this means about the plot). Obscure words naval, historical, scientific, dialectal are the raisins in the spotted dog of O'Brian's prose. Dean King's A Sea of Words is a good present for an O'Brian fan. Certainly I was happy to get it from John Fought for my birthday a few years ago. However, there are some things that it doesn't help with. Here's a passage that illustrates the point (from "The Far Side of the World", p. 78 in th 1992 W.W. Norton paperback; the speakers are Jack Aubrey and his steward Preserved Killick): 'What luck?' asked Jack.
'Well, sir,' said Killick, 'Joe Plaice says he would venture upon a lobscouse, and Jemmy Ducks believes he could manage a goose-pie.'
'What about pudding? Did you ask Mrs Lamb about pudding? About her frumenty?'

    Cruising with Patrick O'Brian -
The Man and the Myth An acquaintance who is a professor of literature at Stanford brought Patrick O'Brian to my attention, claiming him to be the finest living author writing in the English language. Being an avid reader who had consumed about everything including, of course, all of Forster's Hornblower books, I had my doubts. But after an increasingly mesmerizing reading of all of the sixteen O'Brian Aubrey/Maturin novels then in print with ever mounting captivation and awe, I wholeheartedly concurred. After a second reading of the entire series which revealed to me previously undiscovered depths and glories I felt compelled to pay down the debt I owed this author for the wonderful, life-enriching experience he had given me. Since O'Brian obviously loved the sea, it occurred to me to write offering him a fortnight's cruse aboard my Perini ketch, the 154 foot Andromeda la Dea
