By Ian Williams Jan. 13, 2000 W hen Patrick O'Brian died in Dublin early in the new year, not long after the publication of "Blue at the Mizzen," many of his readers were not only bereft, but also agog at the possibility that he may have left another novel laid down on the stocks. His avid readership spans oceans, classes and politics, from right to left, from Charlton Heston to Tom Stoppard. The long, discursive saga of Jack Aubrey, the British naval officer and Stephen Maturin, his surgeon-spy companion, takes readers into a fictional universe that covers the globe, yet is usually contracted into the claustrophobic wooden walls of a Royal Navy ship in the war against Napoleon.

simply the best Have you seen our weblog or our monthly book review? O'Brian is the author of the delightful Jack Aubrey/Stephen Maturin series. Jack Aubrey is a captain in the Royal Navy during the Napoleonic wars and the War of 1812; Stephen Maturin is a naturalist, a physician, a spy, and Jack's particular friend. The books take place all over the world, and offer an interesting picture of the British Empire shortly after 1800. The characters are memorable and finely drawn, the writing is excellent, the history accurate, and each book is better than the last. There are presently 17 or 18 books in the series, which should under no circumstances be read out of order: each book follows directly upon the last. The first three books are Master and Commander Post Captain , and H.M.S. Surprise There are two companion volumes to the series. A Sea of Words contains background material on the Royal Navy and on medical practice of that era, along with a glossary of unusual terms from the books. Harbors and High Seas contains plot summaries of the first 16 or so books, along with detailed maps of the action for the geographically challenged. The former is by

IN MEMORIAM: PATRICK O'BRIAN
January 10, 2000
Senior Correspondent Elizabeth Farnsworth is in San Francisco, remembering a man who wrote about the sea.
ELIZABETH FARNSWORTH: The author Patrick O'Brian died at age 85 in Dublin last week. He wrote 20 novels of the sea, beginning with "Master and Commander" in 1969 and ending with "Blue at the Mizzen" last year. The books chronicle the lives, loves, and wartime battles of British naval officer Jack Aubry and his friend, a ship's surgeon and spy, Stephen Maturin, during the Napoleonic wars of the early 19th century. O'Brian was little known in this country until 1989, when W.W. Norton began publishing his works, including the older ones. To date, more than two million copies have been sold. They seem to evoke strong passions in their fans, one of whom is Richard Snow, editor in chief of "American Heritage" Magazine, and an author of two historical novels himself.
Mr. Snow, you wrote in the "New York Times" Review about the sea novels, that O'Brian "reconstructed a civilization on the foundations of the Aubry-Maturin friendship." Explain that.

Master and Commander Master and Commander is the first of Patrick O'Brian's now famous Aubrey - Maturin novels, regarded by many as the greatest series of historical novels ever written. It establishes the friendship between Captain Jack Aubrey RN and Stephen Maturin, who becomes his secretive ship's surgeon and an intelligence agent. It contains all the action and excitement which could possibly be hoped for in an historical novel, but it also displays the qualities which have put O'Brian so far ahead of any of his competitors: his depiction of the detail of life aboard a Nelsonic man-of-war, of weapons, food, conversation and ambience, of the landscape and of the sea. O' Brian's portrayal of each of these is faultless and the sense of period throughout is acute. His power of characterisation is above all masterly. This brilliant historical novel marked the debut of a writer who has grown into one of the most remarkable literary novelists now writing, the author of what Alan Judd, writing in the Sunday Times, has described as "the most significant extended story since Anthony Powell's A Dance to the Music of Time.

By Dean King
Though he wrote, edited or translated more than forty books altogether, Patrick O'Brian's fame rests on twenty historical novels about the Royal Navy, set in the time of the wars against Napoleon. The novels all feature the bluff, competent sea captain Jack Aubrey and his friend and ship's surgeon, the brilliant but eccentric Stephen Maturin. I came late to the series myself, not picking up the first of them, Master and Commander , until 1994, when the Aubrey-Maturin cult was already well established in the U.S. I then read all sixteen in sequence without pausing for breath. Numbers seventeen through twenty appeared between 1995 and 1999. Patrick O'Brian died on January 2nd this year, leaving the twenty-first book in the series unfinished. sixty-five years later Dean King's account of the slow and halting rise to fame of the Aubrey-Maturin saga does not reflect very well on the perspicacity of publishers and critics. Even in England it was seven years and four books into the series before it was noticed by a major reviewer. In the U.S.A. things were worse: for more than a decade from 1979 to 1990 the Aubrey-Maturin novels could find no American publisher at all. There were many bad reviews another thing the author hated: "O'Brian rarely forgot a negative remark about his work" reports Dean King. It is easy in hindsight to scoff at all those big-name editors and smartypants reviewers who missed the point; but we literary folk think in categories, like the rest of humanity, and nothing is more difficult to categorize than novels like O'Brian's what Dean King correctly calls "well-written page-turners".
