Michael Burlingame’s Response to Stephen Oates
Professor Oates's description of me as a "historian who's made the destruction of my books his raison d'etre" is a bit misleading. I have published eleven books on Abraham Lincoln and am currently writing a multi-volume biography of the sixteenth president for the Johns Hopkins University Press. Professor Oates also fails to note that two of America's foremost men of letters, William Styron and Gore Vidal, believe him guilty of plagiarism. Vidal told an audience at Harvard that "I do think Oates plagiarized." Styron wrote me saying "I think he has plagiarized," a fact which is "as plain as the nose on one's face." Readers wishing to see the evidence of Professor Oates's plagiarism that convinced Styron and others of Professor Oates's guilt might want to consult my article, "'A Sin Against Scholarship': Some Examples of Plagiarism in Stephen B. Oates's Biographies of Abraham Lincoln, Martin Luther King, Jr., and William Faulkner," in the Spring 1994 issue of the Journal of Information Ethics . (That issue, devoted entirely to the Oates case, contains essays by Professor Oates and his defenders as well as his critics.)

T The Southampton Slave Revolt of 1831: A Compilation of Source Material (Amherst: University of Massachusetts Press, 1971) and John B. Duff and Peter M. Mitchell, eds., The Nat Turner Rebellion: The Historical Event and the Modern Controversy The Confessions of Nat Turner (New York: Random House, 1966). More advanced readers might find this novel fascinating; but teachers should point out that Styron's work and the ensuing racial discourse, exemplified in John Henrick Clarke, ed., William Styron's Nat Turner: Ten Black Writers Respond (Boston: Beacon Press, 1968), may reveal much more about race relations in the 1960s than the actual events of 1831 in Southampton County. Styron's book also raises important issues regarding sexuality and racial stereotyping, for Styron has his Nat Turner indulging in masturbation fantasies involving a white woman, Margaret Whitehead, the only victim who was actually killed by Turner's own hand. Through investigating Styron's work a mature student may even gain some understanding of the racial and gender discourse regarding the 1990s murder trial of O. J. Simpson. However, Styron's journey into sexuality tends to distract from an understanding of slavery and the resistance it provoked, and most students will find the book lengthy and lacking in historical context. The Fires of Jubilee . Oates, a professional historian who aims for a popular audience, asserts in the forward to his volume that he was "determined to produce a biographical and historical narrative that would be as realistic and fair-minded as he could make it" (p. vii). Whether Oates achieves this goal is something that students might address in discussion and essays following an examination of the work. Even if one does not find Oates totally lacking in subjectivity, he does place the story of Nat Turner's revolt within the historical and cultural context of America in the 1830s. And while his prose may be a little challenging and plodding for some readers raised on MTV and video games, the book's length of approximately 175 pages of text will not be too intimidating for high school scholars.

    About the Author
Stephen B. Oates is a professor of history at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and the author of eight other books, including The Fires of Jubilee and To Purge This Land with Blood. His task in this biography was to perpetuate Lincoln as he was in the days he lived. His purpose of this biography was to bring the past into the present for us and his students.
    The Life of Abraham Lincoln
    My View on the Book
I found this book interesting and was surprised it was not another documentary style written biography. It was actually interesting to read due to Oates’ creative writing style. And being a factual historical story I learned a little about the life style of the post-colonial period and of course, the life of Lincoln himself whom I know like a close relative now due to the deep personal as well as external imagery expressed in this biography.
