Norris settled in Japan where he wrote a couple of novels and a novella which interestingly enough is written for students of English as a Second Language in Japan describing how he ended up in their country (a subject many Japanese raise in conversation). It all kind of started back home in the States and involves a little thumbing, of which he has fond memories, so Robert submitted this extract from his book. Given the international readership on the web, it's nice to receive a piece written in internationally accessible English. Enjoy! THE MANY ROADS TO JAPAN: A Search for Identity (an extract) John was filled with excitement. The lure of the unknown was out there in the vastness. He was anxious to confront it, to jump into and wallow about in the experiences that awaited him. A new life lay ahead. With him were his life belongings contained in a small, leather backpack: three changes of clothes, a down-filled sleeping bag, a nylon poncho, $500, and a bota bag for drink.

Norris News USC/Norris-Bob Chandler Courage Awards Steve and Rachel Kampff; Yolee Casagrande, R.N.; Presenter Donald Feinstein, M.D., hematologist and former Chandler award recipient; and honoree Robert W. Beart Jr., M.D. During USC home football games last season, the USC/Norris-Bob Chandler Foundation honored physician-researchers who demonstrate marked dedication to cancer research, former patients at the hospital who have displayed strength and courage and people who fund cancer research at USC/Norris. Chandler, a former USC football star and NFL wide receiver, died of cancer at the USC/Norris in 1995. Those honored included these nine recipients: $50,000 Gift to Mesothelioma Research Pipe Trades members, contractors and sponsors with pathologist Parkash Gill, M.D., and Norris senior executive development director Lance Keene. The Southern California Pipe Trades District Council 16, and its contractors, members and sponsors raised $50,000 from their golf invitational, which was chaired by member Tom FitzGerald. The event was attended by members of the event committee, founding members of the Mesothelioma Foundation, Jerry and Elizabeth Paul and Jim Kellogg, U.A. International Representative of the Pipefitters for California and Hawaii Pipe Trades. Sid Stolper from District Council 16 presented the check to Parkash Gill, M.D., professor of medicine and pathology at USC/Norris, who is developing targeted therapeutics to improve treatment outcome for mesothelioma patients. This disease has affected many Pipe Trades members and their families.

Norris, a native Californian and Vietnam War conscientious objector (CO) now lives in Japan and writes about his many experiences on the road and as an expatriate. "Looking for the Summer," republished in 2005 by Lulu Press, tells the story of a Vietnam War CO's adventures and search for identity on the road from Paris to Calcutta in 1977. He writes, "Back in 1970 I was a CO within the military, refused my orders to fight in the war, got court-martialed, and spent time in a military prison," Norris said. "The Kent State killings were the final straw in what was, at the time, a difficult and personal decision to make a stand against the war... "After serving my sentence, I was kicked out of the military with an 'undesirable' discharge. For the next ten years I wandered the globe in search of an identity. I hitchhiked across the States twice, bummed around Europe, and took one journey around the world. Afghanistan and India, in particular, made a deep impression on me. I worked a lot of labor jobs during that time. Wherever I went, I was continually taking notes and writing journals. I became very interested in communication and foreign language study. Eventually, I ended up in Japan, where I now have a challenging job and a satisfying life."
