Norman is a follower of Edgar Rice Burroughs , and his influential Gor series bears parallels to Burroughs' John Carter of Mars . His novels include lengthy philosophical and sociological dissertations criticizing the malaise of modern society (everything from common dishonesty to nuclear holocaust ). A wide variety of societies, cultures, moral concepts, and technologies are described in depth in his novels; however it is always within the context of the male adventure genre, and, as such, families, children, and other mundane aspects of real life are generally absent and those roles are left undiscussed.

O'BRYAN, Sir NORMAN JOHN (1894-1968), judge, was born on 16 October 1894 in South Melbourne, youngest of six children of Victorian-born parents Michael John O'Bryan, bank manager, and his wife Mary Ann, n©e Gleeson. Norman was educated at St Peter and Paul's School, South Melbourne, St Patrick's College, East Melbourne, and Christian Brothers' College, Victoria Parade (dux 1910). At the University of Melbourne (LL.B., 1915) he topped his final year and won the Supreme Court judges' prize. While at university he joined the Catholic Debating Society, competed in cross-country events, rowed, and played cricket and tennis. He had been a member of the Melbourne University Rifles since 1913, but his father opposed his enlisting in the Australian Imperial Force until he had completed his articles of clerkship. At St Patrick's Cathedral, East Melbourne, on 1 June 1921 O'Bryan married Elsa Duncan, a 24-year-old accountant. One child of the marriage survived, but Elsa died in childbirth in 1928. On 14 December 1929 at the same cathedral O'Bryan married her youngest sister Violet Leila Duncan, who was then aged 28. In his early years at the Bar, he held a part-time lectureship (1929-32) at the university in private international law. Despite the Depression, his practice grew steadily. He was a forceful advocate who prepared his cases thoroughly and excelled at trials, though he also appeared before royal commissions and courts of appeal.

Norman John Gillies
Kindly written by John Gillies, son of Norman John Gillies. When my father, Norman John Gillies, was born on St Kilda in house number 15 there was silence. There was not the usual cry that accompanies most babies when they are born. Frantically they tried putting him from cold water to hot to stimulate some sort of response but it was no good, his grandmother Annie said "there's no breath in him, lie him down". Obviously his mother must have been distraught. This, her first child, surely wasn't to be stillborn. Hoping against hope the midwife picked him up and smacked him on the small of the back. The child sucked in some air and let out a wail! What joy there must have been. Norman John Gillies, named after two of his uncles drowned in a boating expedition in 1909, has neither been still nor quiet ever since! For my grandfather, John Gillies, life had already dealt a harsh blow. His pregnant wife, Mary, had become ill in the February of 1930 with suspected appendicitis and was taken to Stobhill Hospital in Glasgow. Norman's most vivid memory is of standing on the jetty and waving to his mother as she was being rowed out to the boat anchored in Village Bay. Complications must have set in as his father John stayed on to be with her. He was given a job in Glasgow by his uncle, AG Ferguson, by then a fairly wealthy tweed merchant. The baby was delivered by caesarian section on 13 May. Unfortunately only thirteen days later his mother, aged just 35, died and baby Annie also.

    JOHN NORMAN
Last updated 29 March 1998 Note : John Norman will be appearing at the I-Con science fiction convention March 27-29. The author of the Gor novels is John Norman, also known to the world at large as John Frederick Lange, Jr., Ph.D. (3 June 1931 - present). John Lange was born in Chicago Illinois to John Frederick and Almyra D. (Taylor) Lange on the third of June 1931. He married Bernice L. Green on the fourteenth of January 1956 and has three children, John, David, and Jennifer. (A note in passing: net searches turn up a college wrestler named John Lange, and several college faculty members; if any of these are John Lange III it can't be proven by me.) He appears fairly regularly at east coast science fiction conventions, sometimes accompanied by his wife. Anyone with knowledge of his convention schedule is encouraged to share it; an appearance itinerary would make a fine addition to this page. He took his B.A. from the University of Nebraska in 1953 and his M.A. from USC in 1957. In 1963 he obtained his Ph.D. from Princeton with a 149 page dissertation entitled In Defence of Ethical Naturalism: An Examination of Certain Aspects of the Naturalistic Fallacy, With Particular Attention to the Logic of an Open Question Arguement
