from dark skies to wet grass
It's been one of those days where, no matter how hard I try, I can't ever seem to really get started, so I've spent much of it in a sort of pissy mood, mostly annoyed at myself for feeling bored or uninspired by everything.
However, I've had a couple of amusing stories come out of me, that I think are worth sharing. I think I may have written about the first one before.
Around 1987 or 1988, I saw Larry Niven at a convention. I was officially there to be the Star Trek guy, but I didn't have to go on stage for a few hours, and rather than sit in some suite with the rest of the Star Trek people who didn't want to get too close to the masses, I grabbed my backpack and wandered around the convention as nerdy fanboy number 42.
I bought a ton of crap in the dealer's room (mostly FASA sourcebooks, and some bootleg anime videos IIRC) and on my way down a hallway toward the gaming room, I saw this guy who was dressed in a Space Shuttle flight suit (blue) sitting behind a table that had some books on it.
Holy shit, it was Larry Niven.

A Review of Larry Niven's New Sci-Fi Collection.
Colin Harvey Feb 24, 2007
This new collection is a useful sampler for those unfamiliar with his work, with collaborations and extracts from several of his major novels and universes.
Like Arthur C. Clarke and Greg Bear Larry Niven is one of the front rank of Hard SF authors who seem to produce bigger and bigger novels (at the time of writing he has no less than seven novels in progress), and fewer and fewer stories. In this, his most recent non-themed collection, there are four solo pieces of short fiction including a new Draco Tavern story, extracts from two of Niven's most recent novels, and extracts from two novel collaboration and a co-written novelette. There are also two nonfiction pieces made up of correspondence between the authors of those pieces, and the other third of the book is made up of articles, anecdotes, and introductory material for other works. Brenda Cooper , my brain felt stuffed to bursting point, although this may also have been due to the tendency to reproduce the e-mails complete with formatting, and asides. At times, it was hard to tell who was writing to whom.

A new Larry Niven novel has never been cause for celebration in the Underview household, so it was with trepidation that I undertook the journey along Destiny's Road. But like him or not, there is one thing that Mr Niven's name on the dustjacket guarantees: a straightforward, scientific adventure. Usually. He's also been known to turn out the odd first rate space opera.
His latest offering could almost be termed a scientific romance (not lovey dovey, mushy stuff but the sort of thing Jack Vance used to do so well in the fifties). The science content is low, outside the initial premise, and it takes on the form of a fantasy-style quest for the protagonist's own version of the Holy Grail.
Destiny is a colony planet, long abandoned by Earth and left with only the merest shreds of advanced technology left over from the original landing and some self replicating machines. But these are slowly braking down, never to be replaced. The road of the title is a long ribbon of fused rock laid down by the rocket exhaust of one of the original landing vehicles.

He was educated near Beverly Hills and went to California Institute of Technology, from 1956 to 1958. He says that after he discovered a bookstore full of used science fiction magazines, he flunked out of college. He later finished his degree in mathematics at Washburn University in Topeka in 1962. After attending graduate school from 1962 to 1963 at UCLA, he lived off of a trust fund set up by his great-grandfather while he worked at becoming a professional writer, selling his first story The Coldest Place to Worlds of If, then one of the leading science fiction magazines. He later redid a science fiction story into his first novel, World of Ptavvs, published in 1966. ...
