Larry Niven Larry Niven was born in 1938 in Los Angeles, California. In 1956 he entered the California Institute of Technology, only to flunk out a year and a half later after discovering a bookstore jammed with used science-fiction magazines. He graduated with a B.A. in mathematics (minor in psychology) from Washburn University, Kansas, in 1962 and completed one year of graduate work before he dropped out to write. His first published story, "The Coldest Place," appeared in the December 1964 issue of Worlds of If . He won the Hugo Award for Best Short Story in 1966 for "Neutron Star" and again in 1974 for "The Hole Man." In 1975 the Worldcon voters awarded The Borderland of Sol the Best Novelette Hugo. His novel Ringworld won the 1970 Hugo Award for Best Novel, the 1970 Nebula Award for Best Novel and the 1972 Ditmar, an Australian award for Best International Science Fiction; it has been followed by two sequels to date, The Ringworld Engineers and The Ringworld Throne . Many of his best stories are set in this long-spanning "Known Space" arc. But while the Ringworld is an artificial, made construct, Niven's Smoke Ring could exist in nature: a doughnut-shaped region of breathable atmosphere in null-gravity, centered on and orbiting a dense object, which is itself in orbit around a star (and in an infinite universe, it should exist

Larry Niven, The Draco Tavern (Tor, 2006) Appropriately enough, I am writing this review about a set of stories set in a spaceport tavern on my iBook while sitting in the Green Man Pub listening to several members of the Neverending Session spin tales of life on the road as working musicians. The Pub as a setting in fantastic literature has long and interesting history. There's The White Hart in Arthur Clarke's Tales from The White Hart The Big Time , Munden's in Orstrander's Grimjack The Innkeeper's Song and Giant Bones , and many, many more. Hell, two anthologies, Tales from the Spaceport Bar or Another Round at the Spaceport Bar (both edited by George H Scithers and Darrell Schweitzer) have been published! Even video fantastic storytelling has its share, such as Ten-Forward, a recreation area in the starship Enterprise-D, and Mos Eisley in the first Star Wars movie, several less than reputable bars shown in the Firefly series, not to mention the Nightmare Cafe on the very short-lived series of the same name. Bars make great settings to bring folks together to tell and hear tales. And the fight scenes can quite amusing as well! Now we can add to that list a new Larry Niven collection

His work is typical science fiction, very concerned with original ideas and scientific concepts with a rollicking good story underneath.

The Draco Tavern by Larry Niven
Today's review is of The Draco Tavern by Larry Niven, newly out in paperback. The book is comprised of connected short stories written from 1977 to 2006. They are presented here ordered by internal chronology, creating a sort of episodic novel. Most of the individual stories are quite short; some are only a few pages.
Thirty years before the book began, and not too long from now, Earth is discovered by the Chirpsithra, a race of eleven-foot tall lobster-like aliens with a galaxy-spanning trading empire billions of years old. The Chirpsithra don't want our real estate; they prefer to live around red dwarf stars. They're here to do business. The main character is Rick Schumann, owner and bartender of the the Draco Tavern, Earth's only multispecies bar, serving the Chirpsithra (they don't drink, but they like to get high on electrical current) and the many strange aliens who come to Earth on the Chirpsithra's slower-than-light trading ships.

    Hat Tip to Larry Niven
In the book Ringwold and its sequels, Larry Niven wrote of an artifact-world so large that 1:1 scale models of various planets, like earth, were created as islands in its vast oceans. Not quite 1:1, but here is the same idea:
The World is a man-made archipelago of 300 islands in the shape of a world map. The World is being built primarily using sand dredged from the sea. Each island ranges from 23,000 m2 to 84,000 m2 (250,000–900,000 square feet or 5.7–21 acres) in size, with 50–100 m of water between each island. The development will cover an area of 9 km in length and 6 km in width, surrounded by an oval breakwater. The only means of transport between the islands will be by boat and helicopter. Prices for the islands will range from $15-45 million (USD). The average price for an island will be around $25 million (USD). Dredging started in 2004 and as of March of 2007 The World is around 90% complete. Update: I have long contended that, at least if you eliminate all entries from the list involving women, that owning an island is the ultimate male fantasy. Also a good way to "short" global warming predictions, if you are so inclined

Larry Niven, creator of the award-winning Ringworld series, continues to keep faith with the future
By Michael McCarty ugo- and Nebula-Award winner Larry Niven is one of the best writers in the field of hard science fiction (fiction very much grounded in science, mathematics and physics). Born on April 30, 1938, in Los Angeles, he graduated with a bachelor of arts in mathematics from Washburn University, Kansas, in 1962 and completed one year of graduate work at UCLA before dropping out to write. In 1964, he sold his first short story, "The Coldest Place," for the sum of $25 to Worlds of If magazine. Of his next three stories, "World of Ptavvs" was published in Worlds of Tomorrow , while "Wrong-Way Street" and "One Face" both appeared in Galaxy . All these magazines were edited by sci-fi legend Frederik Pohl Niven's first novel was an expansion of his short story "World of Ptavvs" in 1966. He also penned such classics as
