Larry van Cott Niven
(born 30 April ; age 69) is an American science fiction writer who wrote the Animated Series episode " The Slaver Weapon " and co-authored the Star Trek comic strip story arc " The Wristwatch Plantation ". Niven is best known as the creator of the Known Space universe, for which he has written many novels and short stories. Ringworld is the most famous of these novels, winning the 1970 Hugo and Nebula Awards awards. Niven became involved in writing for The Animated Series upon the request of Dorothy Fontana . Being determined to make use of animation, his first draft included the mysterious Outsiders from his Known Space universe. This idea was dropped because it was too science heavy and as such not suited for a Saturday morning cartoon show. It later became the short story "The Borderland of Sol", set in the Known Space universe, and won a Hugo Award for Best Novelette in 1976. The same problem of inappropriate subject matter applied to Niven's second pitch, which Niven himself described as too bloody.

Man of Steel,
Woman of Kleenex
By Larry Niven
Things of the form (* text *) are footnotes in the original text. H e's faster than a speeding bullet. He's more powerful than a locomotive. He's able to leap tall buildings at a single bound. Why can't he get a girl? At the ripe old age of thirty-one (* Superman first appeared in Action Comics, June 1938 *), Kal-El (alias Superman, alias Clark Kent) is still unmarried. Almost certainly he is still a virgin. This is a serious matter. The species itself is in danger! An unwed Superman is a mobile Superman. Thus it has been alleged that those who chronicle the Man of Steel's adventures are responsible for his condition. But the cartoonists are not to blame. Nor is Superman handicapped by psychological problems. Granted that the poor oaf is not entirely sane. How could he be? He is an orphan, a refugee, and an alien. His homeland no longer exists in any form, save for gigatons upon gigatons of dangerous, prettily colored rocks. As a child and young adult, Kal-El must have been hard put to find an adequate father-figure. What human could control his antisocial behavior? What human would dare try to punish him? His actual, highly social behavior during this period indicates an inhuman self-restraint. What wonder if Superman drifted gradually into schizophrenia? Torn between his human and kryptonian identities, he chose to be both, keeping his split personalities rigidly separate. A psychotic desperation is evident in his defense of his "secret identity."

Known Space Chronological Ordering
This is a listing of almost all the Known Space fiction by Larry Niven I know of in what I believe to be correct chronological order. Estimated dates for (the start of) each story are given where possible. For a more detailed chronology of events in the Known Space universe, see Larry King's HTML version of Marc Carlson's Known Space Chronology . (Note that there are some minor disagreements on dates between that page and mine.) I have decided (mid 2005) to stop updating this page. The reason is that, having re-read some of the books lately, I've noticed more and more internal contradictions, some chronological (e.g., the gap of 23 years mentioned repeatedly in The Ringworld Engineers becomes 29 years in the subsequent books) and some not (e.g., while the recent Bey Shaeffer stories relate how Louis Wu was brought to Home to be raised by Shaeffer, in Ringworld he seems to have no knowledge of Shaeffer and is said to have grown up on Earth). At some point it becomes an exercise in futility to try to make a sensible chronology, and I think it's reached that point. With one exception, I have
