Anais Nin moved to the United States in 1914 after her father deserted the family. In the United States she attended Catholic schools, dropped out of school, worked as a model and dancer, and returned to Europe in 1923. Short Biography Anais was born in Neuilly, just outside Paris. She spent her childhood in various parts of Europe until, when she was eleven, her father, Spanish composer Joaquin Nin, abandoned his family and left for America; in the same year, her French-Danish mother, Rosa Culmell, took Anais and her two sons to New York where Anais began to write her journals. In 1923 she married Hugo Guiler. She remained in America for 12 years before returning to Paris, where for a while she lived in a houseboat on the Seine. Having worked from the age of fifteen as a model and dancer, then as a teacher and lecturer, she later became a practising psychoanalyst under Otto Rank. In Paris she and Hugo supported various avant-garde artists, among them Henry Miller with whom Anais started a hot affair and exchanged hundreds of letters. Anais moved back to New York just before the outbreak of World War II. She divided her life between New York and Los Angeles, between Hugo and Rupert, a much younger lover and friend. From being a cult figure of the early feminist movement, Anais later rose to international prominence with her writing. She is best known for her diaries but also produced a number of novels and a prose poem in surrealistic style. Characterized by the use of powerful and, at times, disquieting imagery, her work reveals great sensitivity and perception. In 1973 she received an honorary doctorate from Philadelphia College of Art. She was elected to the National Institute of Arts and Letters in 1974.

August 11, 1914.~~~"Impressions of Arrival In New York"
We were all dressed and on deck. It was 2 o'clock and one could vaguely see a city, but very far away. The sea was gray and heavy. How different from the beautiful sea of Spain! I was anxious to arrive, but I was sad. I felt a chill around my heart and I was seeing things all wrong. Suddenly we were wrapped in a thick fog. A torrential rain began to fall, thunder rumbled, lightning flashes lit the heavy black sky. The people promptly took refuge in the lounge. None of the Spanish passengers had ever seen weather like that, so the frightened women wept, the men prayed in low tones. We were not afraid. Maman had seen many storms and her calmness reassured us. We were the first to go back up on the wet deck. But the fog continued and we waited. It was 4 o'clock when the ship began to move again, slowly, as though she approached the great city with fear. Now, leaning on the railing, I couldn't hear anything. My eyes were fixed on the lights that drew closer, I saw the tall buildings, I heard the whistling of the engine, I saw a great deal of movement. Huge buildings went by in front of me. I hated those buildings in advance because they hid what I love mostflowers, birds, fields, liberty.

During her lifetime diarist, eroticist and feminist icon Anaïs Nin compiled an extraordinary erotic diary of some 35,000 pages in 150 separate volumes. From this wealth of material she extracted characters, situations and events for her stories and novels. She might be called the female Casanova, but her work also has touches of the unknown Victorian gentleman who wrote "My Secret Life," late in the 19th Century.
From a shy and easily hurt girl, Nin developed a unique ability to pick up male partners of all ages and types wherever she went and even as she aged. She was a courtesan in Paris, a goddess to a group of gay artists, the center of a literary coterie in New York, and ultimately in her Los Angles period ended up a guru of the women’s movement. Erica Jong has written that no writer has told the "story of woman’s sexuality more honestly" than Nin.
Usually he gave her a small allowance each month to support herself, but this was not enough for her, and she supplemented her income in the 40s by writing erotica. She earned a dollar a page, a job she had taken over from Gershon Legman, who was also for a time her sexual partner. Nin and Henry Miller, her old friend and lover who had also returned to the United States, gave typescripts of their erotic writing to an agent in New York. He sent them to Roy Melisander Johnson of Ardmore, Oklahoma, an old man who, in Gershon Legman’s description, had "all the printed erotica in English, but who found that each story excited his imagination and his jaded virility only once."

"Life s h r i n k s or expands in p r o p o r t i o n to one's courage Anais Nin A spirited diarist , Anais Nin (1903-1977) was born on this day in Paris . (Ah*nah*ees) began her famous diaries in 1914 when her father, a Spanish concert pianist, left the family for another woman. "The role of the writer is not to say what we can all say, but what we are unable to say," she said. Her diaries were remarkable revelations: sorrowful letters to her absent father, a literary exploration of self that created her feminine identity. The first diary was published in 1966 and spanned the years from 1914-1974. She wrote 35,000 pages in 150 volumes. "I write emotional algebra," Nin observed in 1946. Writer Henry Miller , her mentor and lover, called the diaries "a 20-year struggle toward self-realization... Each line is pregnant with a soul struggle." The erotica of her voluminous writings was not something ladies talked or wrote about. Passionate and explicit, Nin delved candidly into her voyage of self-discovery as an artist and believed a woman's dreams were the source of nourishment. She launched

    ANAIS NIN ON DREAMS
Proceed from the dream outward. - Anais Nin's motto
Every difficult situation into which you are sometimes thrown has some kind of opening somewhere, even if it is only by way of the dream.
The great beauty of my life is that I live out what others only dream about, talk about, analyze. I want to go on living the uncensored dream, the free unconscious.
Throw your dreams into space like a kite, and you do not know what it will bring back, a new life, a new friend, a new love, a new country
Dreams pass into the reality of action. From the action stems the dream again; and this interdependence produces the highest form of living.
If one is not comfortable in human life, one dreams. But these dreams can be fulfilled and create a world that is endurable. His mother's solution. The artist's solution.
    Dreams are necessary to life.
The greatest suffering does not come from living, from mirages, from the unattainable dreams of Don Quixote, but from awakening . There is no greater pain that awakening from a dream.
What other human beings only dream of I acted out. I obeyed the dream.

Although her pornography is praised as among the best female writing in the genre, Anais Nin's most remarkable creation, apart from her life, is her diary some of those in it call it a "Liary." This began when Nin was twelve and continued for over forty years sixty-nine handwritten volumes, so revealing and explosive even as half-truths that she kept it hidden from all her men. On this day in 1977, Anais Nin's Delta of Venus was posthumously published; also on this day in 1980, Henry Miller died.
