Jump to: navigation search D'Arcy Francis Niland 20 October 29 March ) was the Australian novelist and short story writer best know for The Shiralee Niland was born in Glen Innes, New South Wales into a large Irish Catholic family. He was named by his father after the Australian boxer Les Darcy, but Niland changed the spelling of his first name as an adult. He left school at 14 and for a time (at age 16) worked as a copy-boy for the Sydney Sun. The Depression ended this employment and for some years he travelled the country working in a wide variety of occupations. He married the New Zealand author Ruth Park in 1942. After their marriage the Nilands travelled through the outback of Australia for a time before settling in Surry Hills in Sydney where they earned a living writing full-time. Between 1949 and 1952 he won many prizes for short stories and novels, and in 1955 achieved international fame with his novel The Shiralee . This was followed by Call Me When the Cross Turns Over (1957) and four more novels. He also wrote radio and television plays, and hundreds of short stories, some of which were published in four books between 1961 and 1966.

Buster, four-year-old bundle of loyalty and fortitude, combines these more adult qualities with a natural childishness, and the result is a character creation of almost startling conviction. Buster is no joy to Macauley, he treats her with an uncompromising firmness: she must go on walking when she is nearly exhausted, must stop chattering when he wants to be quiet, must not complain. But Macauley has, too, a certain grudging affection for her, and this affection develops until it is so threatened by circumstances that it must at last be openly admitted.

Ruth Park has written a richly researched portrait of Sydney, packed with accounts of stirring events and fascinating people, from the time the First Fleet sailed into Sydney Harbour.
The book is organised into half day and day trips, starting from Circular Quay,"The Open Door", and moving on to visit the early-settled parts of the city. Parts of the history of each area are sketched and compared with the rapidly-changing reality of the moment.  Important buildings, roads and bridges, parks and gardens, monuments and landmarks (past and present) are put into the context of the times along with a parade of heroes and  villains, men on the make, movers and shakers, builders and dreamers

    Home Before Dark
    Home Unit Handbook

This is the story of a young man who conceived the ambition to become a world champion and set up his struggling family for life. His ability was seldom fully extended as he overwhelmed all opposition in Australia. Cursed by the shadow of the Great War, he fell foul of the authorities during the bitterly divisive conscription debate. The wrath of powerful men followed him in the United States. There, with his dream within reach, he met an opponent he could not master.
Home Before Dark was published by Penguin in 1995 and is available in paperback from good bookshops. Please get in touch with me if you have any trouble finding a copy.

    The Ballad of Les Darcy
Peter Fitzsimons had just finished this little number when we heard him speak at the SWF. He asked if there was anyone in the audience who didn't know who Les Darcy was. I had no idea!! Probably because I was the youngest person in the room and Darcy was famous during the WWI years. Boy, did I feel ignorant - this sporting hero was more famous pre 1950s than Sir Don himself. This is the story of one of our most famous sons - it is the quintessential Aussie battler story.
Fitzsimon's writing style is like you're sitting with him in a great little country pub having a grand old yarn - he's really hit the nail on the head penning this one (see I can do this kind of writing too!). Les Darcy was born in country NSW and quickly became one of the best boxers in the world - the smiling boxer, full of good humour and a great character. The eldest of 11 kids, with a drunk of a father and a worn-out mum, Les took it on himself to support them with his boxing. With the outbreak of WWI the pressure was on Darcy from all sides to join up - the only problem was he saw his mates coming home in coffins and thought twice before that kind of end for himself. He wanted to set his family up for life before a bullet took him. Your heart will be torn reading about Les's short-lived troubled life - two noble causes clashing, and a young kid caught in the middle. Author D'arcy Niland put his finger on it:
"In some mysterious way he was ... someone who did his best, came a cropper and didn't whinge about it. There's something profoundly perverse if you like, in the Australian psyche that feels most love for a good loser" (kind of the way I feel for Cade this footy season).

But critics have acclaimed him for his expert craft in developing his works. His most popular novel is The Shiralee (1955). It is an intimate portrayal of a man wandering in the outback with his 4-year-old daughter. His other novels include Gold in the Streets (1949), Call Me When the Cross Turns Over (1957), The Big Smoke (1959), Ballad of the Fat Bushranger (1961), and Pairs and Loners (1965). Niland wrote more than 500 short stories, as well as stage plays and scripts for radio and television.

    Ruth Park: A Celebration
Joy Hooton surveys Ruth Park's life and work
Ruth Park was born in Auckland, New Zealand, the daughter of a pioneering bridge builder and road maker, whose work took his family into the wild territory of North Auckland and the King Country. As a result she had a singular early childhood, growing up as 'a forest creature', familiar with the New Zealand bush rather than with the products of civilisation or with children of her own age. Books were largely absent, the family possessing two which she was not allowed to read. The school that she subsequently attended in the small town of Te Kuiti boasted a library of eight books held behind a glass door. Nevertheless, she was a fluent reader of newspapers, public signs and other miscellaneous forms of print. In A Fence around the Cuckoo (1992) she emphasises the most important aspects of this early experience for her development as a writer: 'a solitary childhood; an introspective, often numinous landscape; people very close to their ancestral roots and showing it on their faces and in their idiom and manner of thought' (pp. 39-40).
