Ngugi Wa Thiong'o Goes Home Saturday, 02 June 2007 And the dictators Ngugi talks about are men. Some of these ingredients of dictatorship, for example, are murder; rape; corruption; greed of the dictator who struggles to centralize, own and control all the resources of his country; decadent masculinity; staunch heterosexuality; male chauvinism; homophobia; religious confusion; political and real illnesses of the dictator; patronage and reliance on foreign military and foreign economic, social, cultural and political support; poverty; unemployment; disease; environmental degradation; and low quality and unpatriotic education. Though fictionalized, one can identify the Ruler in the novel as Kenyatta, Bokassa, Mobutu, Banda, Mugabe, Moi and other African dictators all rolled up in one.
Wizard of the Crow
By Cabral Pinto
Ngugi told Kenyans that his homecoming gift to them was the novel Wizard of the Crow, then in its Gikuyu version. Fundamental changes in a society, including revolution, undertaken and carried out successfully by its people, and led by a patriotic political leadership, constitute one part of the core story and message of Wizard of the Crow.

Literary Wizard
Ngugi wa Thiong'o at the book reading of Wizard of the Crow on 10th August. The author considers England his second home, and was once a resident of Islington, North London. Here he is with his wife Njeeri, a day before the 2nd anniversary of the attack they suffered on return to Kenya. The author's young son, Thiong'o (who got to say a few words on the night, thanking the audience in an American accent for coming to honour his father) is next to Njeeri. Ngugi seemed to want to make the event a celebration of life and survival, bringing his family along to the event. Lucky for the audience, they got five Thiong'os for the price of one. Ngugi explained that his younger children had only been spared the attack because, as luck would have it, they had chosen to go and spend the night with a relative.
Ngugi autographs a copy of Wizard of the Crow for a reader lucky to be the first in line, a neverending queue for autographs at Congress Hall.

An Interview with Ngugi Wa Thiong’o
By Michael Pozo N gugi
Wa Thiong’o is Distinguished Professor of English and Comparative Literature and Director of the International Center for Writing and Translation at the University of California at Irvine A Kenyan writer of Gikuyu descent, Ngugi is the author of various novels such as Weep Not Child The River Between , A Grain of Wheat (1967) and Petals of Blood (1977). In 1980 Ngugi published the first modern novel ever written in Gikuyu called Devil on the Cross Ngugi’s critical works include Homecoming Detained: A Writer’s Prison Diary Decolonizing the Mind (1986) and Moving the Center (1993). As a novelist, playwright and critical thinker Ngugi has dealt with the concerns most affecting his native Kenya including issues of Colonialism, Nationalism and Post-Colonialism. During the late 70’s his commitment to art and community led him to form communal theater groups in villages, which showcased some of his most indicting plays. These works portrayed the political corruption of Post-Colonial life in Kenya and the people’s struggle to define an identity despite years of harsh political and social transitions. In 1977

Review Summaries Source Rating Date Reviewer New Statesman Adewale Maja-Pearce TLS Chinweizu - Return to top of the page - The complete review 's Review Ngugi wa Thiong'o famously began his writing career writing in English (publishing under the name "James Ngugi"). He had considerable success, but eventually turned to writing in his mother tongue, Gikuyu (though he did translate and publish these later works in English too). Ngugi is among a handful of authors who have written successfully in more than one language Samuel Beckett and Vladimir Nabokov are among the few others but his reasons for doing so differ somewhat from those of other bilingual authors. Decolonising the Mind is both an explanation of how he came to write in Gikuyu, as well as an exhortation for African writers to embrace their native tongues in their art.

Ngugi wa Thiong'o lecture moved to accommodate larger audience The October 7 lecture by distinguished African novelist and playwright Ngugi wa Thiong'o (bio follows this page) will be moved from Hemenway Hall Theater to the Campus Center Ballroom at UH Manoa. The lecture, "Native Languages and the Politics of De-Colonization," is still set for noon Tuesday. "When we started hearing how many students and faculty were planning to come, we realized the Hemenway Theater would not be big enough," says Haunani-Kay Trask, director of the UH Center for Hawaiian Studies. The Center is hosting Ngugi and presenting two free public lectures by the celebrated African writer. "At Campus Center, we can accommodate a larger audience, and we even have the flexibility to enlarge the space somewhat if we need to." Trask says there will be signs posted at Hemenway Theater directing the audience to the new location, in the nearby Campus Center. Ngugi will also speak Thursday, October 9, at 6:30 p.m. in the Auditorium of the Center for Hawaiian Studies at UH Manoa. His topic that evening will be "Native Resistance in Contemporary Africa."
