Thrice Told Tales: How Stories Become Reality
in Ngugi wa Thiong'o's Wizard of the Crow By Scott Esposito I. Ngugi wa Thiong'o's new novel Wizard of the Crow The tone of Thiong'o's language matches the setting and characters: the story feels as though it is being told orally, as though Wizard of the Crow is only a transcribed version of a story told and retold across Aburiria. (Providing evidence of how well Thiong'o's books work when related verbally, James Gibbons in BookForum reports that they are routinely read aloud in Kenyan bars.) Often before relating a key event, the narrator will inform us that "opinions differ" as to what actually happened, or that the tale we are being told is but a codified version of rumor. Storytelling is also blended into the narrative: characters are continually telling each other improvised versions of what has just happened to them, and there's even a character named Arigaigai Gathere (known throughout as A.G., which, we are told, often stands for the Attorney General of storytelling), who pops up throughout the book telling key parts of the narrative to a packed Kenyan bar at some indeterminate point in the future. Thiong'o's continual return to the theme of storytelling is meant to convey a respect for and understanding of the Kenyan storytelling tradition. This is more than just an appreciation of his nation's ancestry, however; Thiong'o's dedication to storytelling cuts to the core of his politics. These beliefs, laid out in

Heinemann 1989 A book review by Danny Yee The struggle for independence over, a resistance fighter comes out of the bush, buries his AK47, and girds himself with a belt of peace. But he finds life in the newly independent state is far from his dreams, with business continuing very much as it did before. Using the name Matigari ma Nijiruungi, "the patriots who survived the bullets", he joins up with a worker, a prostitute, and an orphan. When he confronts the sons of those he had fought, demanding the house he built, he is locked up. He and the others in his cell tell one another their stories before miraculously escaping. As rumours about him spread, Matigari goes in search of truth and justice. He asks in shopping centres, law courts, eating places, and farmlands. He asks old women and students and teachers and priests. And finally at a public meeting he asks the Minister for Truth and Justice and his parrots, only to be locked up in a mental hospital. Here Matigari takes off his belt of peace and tramples it, remembering that "Justice for the oppressed comes from a sharpened spear". Escaping, he is tracked down with dogs but disappears, becoming a myth and leaving his weapons and his words to those among the next generation who will take up the struggle.

Petals of Blood
Ngugi wa Thiong'o - Author
Moses Isegawa - Introduction by
add to basket view basket Book: Paperback After a terrible murder in the village of Ilmorog four suspects are placed in detention: Munira the headmaster; Abdullah the storekeeper; Karega the assistant teacher and 'barmaid' Wanja. The lives of these four characters are inextricably linked with the lives of the three murder victims, the fortunes of Ilmorog and with the fate of Kenya itself. Published to great controversy in 1977, Petals of Blood is as much a whodunnit as a political novel and satire. Ngugi unfolds a human landscape that is both beautiful and horrifying, as tribalism and village life are manipulated in the name of progress by the cynical bureaucrats who came to power as heroes of liberation. Ngugi wa Thiong'o
Ngugi is one of the most widely read African writers of our time. He is among a few authors who have written successfully in more than one language. He began his career writing in English, but eventually turned to writing in his native language, Gikuyu. During the lecture, Ngugi will discuss his book, "Decolonising the Mind: The Politics of Language in African Literature," in which he explores language as a critical form of self-identity and how language colonization impacts society. Kampala Uganda . A prolific writer, he has published numerous books, short stories, essays, a memoir, and several plays. His novel, Weep Not, Child , about the effects of the Mau Mau War on individuals and families in Kenya has received critical acclaim. His book, Petals of Blood , for which he was imprisoned by the Kenyan government in 1977, describes the inequality in post-independence Kenya Wizard of the Crow Ngugi is currently a distinguished professor of English and comparative literature and director of the International Center for Writing and Translation at the University of California at Irvine . Ngugi was born in 1938 in Limuru in the Gikuyu Highlands of Kenya . Like many of the dispossessed peasants in Petals of Blood , his father worked as a laborer on the estate of an African landowner. Ngugi's mother was one of his father's four wives, and Ngugi was one of about 28 children in the family. He studied at

"It produces a world characterized by a dangerously widening gap between the wealth of a small stratum and the poverty of the social majority within each of the nations of the Earth. This trend is accompanied by loss of voice for the impoverished majority." Ngugi worked on this novel for eight years, finishing it shortly after coming to UCI in 2002 as director of the International Center for Writing and Translation. Originally, he wrote the novel in his native Kenyan language of Gikuyu, then translated it to English himself. Three decades ago, he declared his intention of writing in Gikuyu rather than English in an effort to revitalize indigenous languages. In translating Murogi wa Kagogo into Wizard of the Crow , Ngugi said, "The biggest challenge was in trying to figure a way of rendering in English the playfulness of the Gikuyu language. Gikuyu is very tonal, and the same word could mean and suggest different things depending on the tone. Trying to translate the musicality of one language into that of another is always difficult. But still, translation is the common language of all languages."

It will be a great honour for the University to award them Honorary Doctorates." Both John Graham and Ngugi wa Thiong'o will be awarded the degree of Honorary Doctor of Literature. John Graham has long been a prominent figure in education and sport. Last year he retired as Chancellor of The University of Auckland, a role he had held since 1999. Friday, 11 August 2006 Forces within Kenya have tried to silence Ngugi wa Thiong'o's voice twice. In 1977, the future president Daniel arap Moi threw him into a maximum-security prison without trial for co-authoring a play critical of the government. Ngugi was released one year later, only to discover that his teaching job had disappeared. He eventually left the country because of fear for his own safety in 1982. For a while, it looked like he would never return. "Moi used to say, 'I can forgive anybody but Ngugi'," says the 68-year-old novelist today at his home in Irvine, where he is a professor of English at the University of California. At just over five feet tall, with a ready giggle, he is hardly the portrait of a steely revolutionary. When Moi agreed to abide by term limits, and his hand-picked successor lost in the presidential elections, Wa Thiong'o realised that he had a chance to come home. It was good timing. Wa Thiong'o had just completed a six-volume satirical novel called Murogi wa Kagogo, a ribald satire of a fictional African dictator. It was also the longest novel ever written in his native Gikuyu language.
