This classic of children's literature dates from 1902. Four children Robert, Anthea, Jane, and Cyril (the fifth is their infant brother known as Lamb) are playing at a sand pit when they stumble on a Psammead: an ancient sand fairy that will grant a wish a day, which lasts only as long as the sun is visible. Over the succeeding days, the kids learn how many ways that wishes can backfire on them they wish for money they can't get anyone to accept...
Magic City

Philip Haldane, 10, is not happy when his older half-sister Helen marries a widowed man with a daughter named Lucy. In a sour mood because he has had to give up his exclusive relationship with Helen, Philip makes a bad impression on everyone, who in turn treat him badly. Left alone one day, he builds a huge city with Lucy's toys, then awakens to find himself inside it! Much to his irritation, Lucy shows up too. At first placed under arrest, Philip is the...

born 19 aug 1858 / died 04 may 1924
i started to read Edith Nesbit's books already as child
as i found her books in the school library together with Francis Hodgson Burnett's books
from the beginning on i loved Nesbit's stories more than any others
many years later i found in C. S. Lewis' Narnia stories a similar good quality first Harry Potter fans may forgive me, but i can't imagine, that someone, who knows Nesbit's books can be a passionate fan of Joanne K. Rowling first of all The Magic City although i've read it meantime several times it will be for me the best book ever Nesbit's heros don't solve the world, not even the own family, but are fighting to be a better human she was a self-conscious woman in the beginnings of emancipation, paying the daily life out of her own work as a story teller, not a very normal situation in the victorian/edwardian times besides of The Magic City i like mostly the Psammead further i like the Enchanted Castle short said, if you don't know Edith Nesbit's books, you have missed the world's most enchanted

Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm Joseph Jacobs Charles Perrault Modern Writing for Children David Almond E. Nesbit Edith Nesbit is best known for the stories and novels she wrote for children, and as the creator of the Bastable family. Her fantasy novels Five Children and It , The Phoenix and the Carpet, and The Story of the Amulet established a formula for fantasy writing for children that has been followed by children's writers all over the world. Edith Nesbit was the youngest of the four surviving children of John Collis Nesbit, an agricultural chemist of distinction and principal of an agricultural college in Kennington. Edith's father died when she was three. Her mother ran the college herself for a short while, but, when Edith was nine, decided to move abroad for the health of Edith's elder sister Mary. Edith and her siblings were thrown into a nomadic existence across France and Germany. Edith hated most of the school she went to, and even tried to run away from one in Germany. The family came back to England, and when Edith was thirteen, settled into a large country house in Kent. Edith loved this house, and spent much of her time exploring the surroundings with her brothers Alfred and Harry. Edith drew on the house and its surroundings, as well as their way of life, in her books.
