Executive summary: The Unfortunate Traveller English poet, playwright, and pamphleteer, born at Lowestoft in 1567. His father belonged to an old Herefordshire family, and is vaguely described as a "minister." Nashe spent nearly seven years, 1582-89, at St. John's College, Cambridge, taking his B.A. degree in 1585-86. On leaving the university he tried like Robert Greene and Christopher Marlowe , to make his living in London by literature. It is probable that his first effort was The Anatomie of Absurditie (1589) which was perhaps written at Cambridge, although he refers to it as a forthcoming publication in his preface to Greene's Menaphon (1589). In this preface, addressed to the gentlemen students of both universities, he makes boisterous ridicule of the bombast of Thomas Kyd and the English lexameters of Richard Stanihurst, but does not forget the praise of many good books. Nashe was really a journalist born out of due time; he boasts of writing "as fast as his hand could trot"; he had a brilliant and picturesque style which, he was careful to explain, was entirely original; and in addition to his keen sense of the ridiculous he had an abundance of miscellaneous learning. As there was no market for his gifts he fared no better than the other university wits who were trying to live by letters.

THOMAS NASHE (1567-1601?) The following biography is reprinted from Characteristics of English Poets from Chaucer to Shirley . William Minto. London: William Blackwood and Sons, 1885. Marlowe's unfinished tragedy of Dido was completed by Thomas Nashe; and though this clever writer is memorable chiefly as a prose satirist, yet his name will always be remembered most naturally in connection with his poetical associates, Greene Marlowe , Lodge , and Peele . Nashe was educated at Cambridge, which he seems to have left in some disgrace, and his first essay in print was the dashing critical preface to Greene's Menaphon in 1587. A clever harum-scarum fellow, with a quick sense of the ludicrous, and an unsparing tongue, he found admirable scope for his powers in replying to the Martin Marprelate tracts, which he did in some four or five different pamphlets in and about the year 1589. In the same year he opened up a vein of general prose satire in his Anatomy of Absurdity , a general attack on whatever struck him as ridiculous in contemporary literature and mannersranging consequently within a wide circle. In 1592 he continued his exercitations in this vein with

THOMAS NASHE, THOMAS LODGE, AND PIERCE PENILESSE
In 1891, E G. Fleay suggested that Thomas Nashe had Thomas Lodge in mind in the section of Pierce Penilesse (1592) that describes "The prodigall yoong Master" (margin) and begins "A yoong Heyre or Cockney, that is his Mothers Darling, if hee haue playde the waste-good at the Innes of the Court or about London...."[sup1] Since then, few have noticed this suggestion, still fewer have accepted it. R. B. McKerrow (1904) recorded it without comment.[sup2] N. Burton Paradise (1931) rejected it, thinking Mashe's description more a general illustration than a specific personal attack. Besides, he wrote, since Lodge had not returned from his voyage with Cavendish by August 8, 1592, when Pierce was registered, the attack would have been untimely or without point. To Paradise, moreover, Lodge probably was not a prodigal and wastrel of the kind in Nashe's account.[sup3] Edward Andrews Tenney (1935) did find a clear allusion, whether Lodge had returned home or not.[sup4] And Charles Nicholl (1984) thought that it "reads very like" one.[sup5] No others, to my knowledge, mention it. Tenney, exasperated that Paradise had denied the presence of an allusion, gave a fair summary of Nashe (who is quoted) and the case for one: "the known facts coincide exactly with Nashe's description. Lodge was a 'yoong Heyre,' 'his Mothers Darling,' with a 'Students pension,' who 'playde the waste-good at the Innes of Court,' quarreled with his father and brother; and finally went 'to the sea' to 'teare the gold out of the Spaniards throats.'"[sup6]

He was considered a great wit and brilliant personality of his time. Nashe was employed by the Church of England to answer the attacks made on it by a Puritan writer, or group of writers, known as Martin Marprelate. Under the pen name of Pasquil, Nashe responded with satiric pamphlets, which may have included An Almond for a Parrat (1590). He also took part in a violent literary controversy against the poet Gabriel Harvey and his brother Richard Harvey, who had been extremely critical of the writings of Nashe and his friend
