Little is known with certainty of Nashe's life. He was baptized in Lowestoft Suffolk . The family moved to West Harling , near Thetford in . Around Thomas went up to St John's College, Cambridge as a sizar , gaining his bachelor's degree in . From references in his own polemics and those of others, he does not seem to have proceeded Master of Arts there. Most of his biographers agree that he left his college about summer , as his name appears on a list of students due to attend philosophy lectures in that year. His reasons for leaving are unclear; his father may have died the previous year, but Richard Lichfield maliciously reported that Nashe had fled possible expulsion for his role in Terminus et non terminus , one of the raucous student theatricals popular at the time. Some years later

English pamphleteer, poet, dramatist, and novelist. The first of the English prose eccentrics, Nashe wrote in a vigorous combination of colloquial diction and idiosyncratic coined compounds that was ideal for controversy. Among his works are the satire Pierce Penilesse His Supplication to the Divell (1592); the masque Summers Last Will and Testament (1592, published 1600); The Unfortunate Traveller (1594), the first picaresque novel in English; and Nashes Lenten Stuffe (1599). Thomas Nashe was born at Lowestoft and was educated at St. John's College, Cambridge. After visiting France and Italy he settled in London where he joined a literary circle which included Robert Greene . He wrote several pamphlets attacking Puritanism under the pseudonym Pasquil, and the vitriol in his now lost comedy The Isle of Dogs resulted in a brief spell of imprisonment on the orders of The Privy Council. Nashe's linguistic ability, originality, and ascetic wit is at its most typical in Summer's Last Will and Testament (1592) and Lenten Stuffe , a ridiculous panegyric of a red herring. The Unfortunate Traveller , a picaresque novel describing the exciting adventures of an English page on the Continent, is the first in a new genre. Spring

Thomas Nashe
Playwright and artist. His first published work was a preface to Greene's Menaphon (1589) which attacked the follies of contemporary literature. He then became embroiled in the Martin Marprelate controversy and wrote a series of savagely anti-Puritan works.
Christs' Teares over Jerusalem (1593), a religious meditation was written for Lady Elizabeth Carey and was followed by The Terrors of Night a treatise on dreams.
His other works include the satirical Summer's Last Will and Testament (1592) and the gentler The Unfortunate Traveller (1594). His satirical comedy The Isle of Dogs (1597), now lost, angered the authorities and led to a period of imprisonment.

CRITICISM WORKS TIMELINE PATRONS ... PORTRAIT Early life
Thomas Nashe was a famous Elizabethan satirist. Born November 1567 in Lowestoft, a fishing port in eastern England, he was the third son of a clergyman called William Nashe. When Nashe was a child of six his father became minister of a country village, West Harling in Norfolk, and the family moved there. Nashe probably had his first schooling with his father at home. At fourteen (not specially young for those days) he went up to Cambridge university, where he spent five years studying dry subjects like philosophy and Latin before finally taking his degree in 1586. He may have planned to stay on, but early in 1587 his father died; possibly the money for his education ran out. Also though, in about 1586/7 Nashe had helped other students put on a play (now lost) that evidently upset the university authorities. Perhaps they put pressure on him to leave. Whatever the real reason, by late 1588 and aged almost twenty-one, Nashe quit Cambridge for London. Career In London young Nashe took part in a government propaganda campaign against puritans (he never liked puritans), and soon grew friendly with other authors, in particular

English poet, satirist, and anti-Puritan pamphleteer. He was drawn into the Martin Marprelate controversy and wrote at least three attacks on the Martinists. Among his later works are the satirical Pierce Pennilesse, his Supplication to the Divell (1592) and the religious Christes Teares over Jerusalem The Unfortunate Traveller (1594) is a picaresque narrative mingling literary parody and mock-historical fantasy. He was born in Lowestoft, Suffolk, graduated from Cambridge University in 1586, and settled in London about 1588. His first publication was an acrid review of recent literature prefixed to Robert Greene's Menaphon , a topic which he discussed at greater length in The Anatomie of Absurditie (1589). After this he was engaged in the Marprelate controversy for a time. He published
