Frederic Ogden Nash (August 19, 1902 – May 19, 1971) was an American poet best known for writing pithy and funny light verse.
Ogden Nash was born in Rye, New York. His father owned and operated an import-export company, and because of business obligations, the family relocated often.
In 1920, Nash entered Harvard University, only to drop out a year later. He worked his way through a series of jobs, eventually landing a position as an editor at Doubleday publishing house, where he first began to write poetry.
In 1931 he published his first collection of poems, Hard Lines, earning him national recognition. Some of his poems reflected an anti-establishment feeling. For example, one verse, entitled Common Sense, asks:
Why did the Lord give us agility,
    If not to evade responsibility?
When Nash wasn’t writing poems, he made guest appearances on comedy and radio shows and toured the United States and England, giving lectures at colleges and universities.
Nash was regarded respectfully by the literary establishment, and his poems were frequently anthologized even in serious collections such as Selden Rodman's 1946 A New Anthology of Modern Poetry.

    Ogden Nash (1902 - 1971)
A master of light, whimsical, and sometimes nonsensical verse, Nash started his writing career at Doubleday Page Publishers, where he wrote his first children's book with Joseph Algers, The Cricket of Garador , in 1925. After six years of writing advertising copy as an editor and publicist at Doubleday, Nash claimed, he began his career in humorous poetry by scribbling one afternoon. His scribbles were to become a poem called Spring Comes to Murray Hill , which he threw away. Upon some thought, however, he retrieved it from the wastebasket and sent it to The New Yorker . His first piece of satiric verse was published in 1930. After "Murray Hill" Nash's work began to appear in other periodicals. He was prolific enough that he published a collection of his poetry, Hard Lines , in 1931. Hard Lines sold out seven printings in its first year and catapulted Nash into his role as the master of light verse. In 1932 Nash left Doubleday to join the editorial staff of The New Yorker . His steady and lengthy affiliation with the magazine helped establish its distinctive tone and sense of humor. According to poet Archibald MacLeish, Nash "altered the sensibility of his time." Even after the widespread reception of his first book, however, Nash still insisted that the whole thing was an accident. He had already become quite popular with the general public through his work in

THE CENTIPEDE I objurgate the centipede, A bug we do not really need. At sleepy-time he beats a path Straight to the bedroom or the bath. You always wallop where he's not, Or, if he is, he makes a spot. THE HIPPOPOTAMUS Behold the hippopotamus! We laugh at how he looks to us, And yet in moments dank and grim, I wonder how we look to him. Peace, peace, thou hippopotamus! We really look all right to us, As you no doubt delight the eye Of other hippopotami. THE FLY God in his wisdom made the fly And then forgot to tell us why. THE TERMITE Some primal termite knocked on wood And tasted it, and found it good, And that is why your Cousin May Fell through the parlor floor today.

The two-l llama, He's a beast. And I will bet A silk pajama There isn't any Three-l lllama.* Ogden Nash (to which Nash appended the footnote *The author's attention has been called to a type of conflagration known as a three-alarmer. Pooh. ) This is probably Nash's best known poem, and for good reason. Not only does he provide a wonderfully quotable mnemonic, he goes on to extend it with an almost Carrollian piece of whimsy, carrying the progression through to its logical conclusion (why *isn't* there a three-l lllama anyway?). And the footnote is a delightful piece of icing on the cake, there being something so Nashian about the pun that I have to wonder whether it was part of the poem all along. -martin [Afterthought] 'llama' would, of course, be pronounced 'yama' in the original Spanish, though it has been quite thoroughly Anglicised by now.
