After graduating from St. George's School (Middletown, Rhode Island), Nash entered Harvard University in 1920, only to drop out a year later. He returned to St. George's to teach for a year and left to work his way through a series of other jobs, eventually landing a position as an editor at Doubleday publishing house, where he first began to write poetry. Ogden Nash is one of the few American humorous poets. He became very famous during his life for his funny work. His many poems are loved by both children and adults. I hope that after you read this you will like his poetry as much as I did. (Frederic) Ogden Nash was born in Rye, New York, on August 19, 1902 . He went to a school in Newport, Rhode Island. Later he attended Harvard University for one year but left because of family financial problems. He decided to get a job. He became a teacher at his old school in Rhode Island, which was called St. George's School, but quit because of stress from his fourteen-year-old students. Ogden Nash then became a salesman, then an adviser, then an editorial staff worker. Then he became a famous poet. He got to be on radio and television. He died on May 19, 1971,in Baltimore, Maryland. Ogden Nash's strongest style in his writing was humor, but he had many others. One of his techniques was to write some of his lines of uneven lengths. He also misspelled and made up words to make them rhyme and sound humorous, which was strange since he went to Harvard, a very serious school. He often wrote about animals, which I like. It makes poems more interesting. Here is a poem of his: The Eel
I don't mind eels
Except as meals.

A LADY THINKS SHE IS THIRTY Unwillingly Miranda wakes, Feels the sun with terror, One unwilling step she takes, Shuddering to the mirror. Miranda in Miranda's sight Is old and gray and dirty; Twenty-nine she was last night; This morning she is thirty. Shining like the morning star, Like the twilight shining, Haunted by a calendar, Miranda sits a-pining. Silly girl, silver girl, Draw the mirror toward you; Time who makes the years to whirl Adorned as he adorned you. Time is timelessness for you; Calendars for the human; What's a year, or thirty, to Loveliness made woman? Oh, Night will not see thirty again, Yet soft her wing, Miranda; Pick up your glass and tell me, then How old is Spring, Miranda?

A Gleeful Splash of Ogden Nash
By Jonathan Yardley Sunday, May 8, 2005; Page BW02 OGDEN NASH The Life and Work of America's Laureate of Light Verse
Ogden Nash, ca. 1962 (Little, Brown) By Douglas M. Parker. Ivan R. Dee. 316 pp. $27.50 At the end of the 1920s Ogden Nash was in his late twenties, living in New York City, working as a copywriter in the advertising department of Doubleday, the prominent book publisher, and trying his hand at poetry. It didn't take long, Douglas M. Parker writes, for him to reach "the important conclusion that he simply lacked the talent to become a serious poet: 'There was a ludicrous aspect to what I was trying to do; my emotional and naked beauty stuff just didn't turn out as I had intended.' " Instead he ventured into light verse, which enjoyed a more significant readership then than it does today. This was one of his earliest efforts: The turtle lives twixt plated decks That practically conceal its sex.

Trustees exclaimed, "He never bungles!"
And sent him off to distant jungles.
Camped on a tropic riverside,
One day he missed his loving bride.
She had, the guide informed him later,
Been eaten by an alligator.
Professor Twist could not but smile.
"You mean," he said, "a crocodile." The Tale of Custard the Dragon Belinda lived in a little white house, With a little black kitten and a little gray mouse, And a little yellow dog and a little red wagon, And a realio, trulio, little pet dragon. Now the name of the little black kitten was Ink, And the little gray mouse, she called her Blink, And the little yellow dog was sharp as Mustard, But the dragon was a coward, and she called him Custard. Custard the dragon had big sharp teeth, And spikes on top of him and scales underneath, Mouth like a fireplace, chimney for a nose, And realio, trulio, daggers on his toes.
