R. K. Narayan
Rasipuram Krishnaswami Ayyar Naranayanaswami (1906-2001) was born in Madras and had his initial education there, and later in Mysore. He is considered one of the trio (along with Mulk Raj Anand and Raja Rao ) that forms the precursor to Indian Writing in English as we know it today. His books in general are lightly humorous, but the unexpected touch of pathos is undeniable. The most popular of his creations is the fictitious town of Malgudi with its unforgettable denizens. His friendship with Graham Greene was instrumental in his becoming known to the world. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan and the Sahitya Akademi Award.

In Memory of R.K. Narayan
Dost Mittar May 24, 2001
Tags: Society
R.K. Narayan passed away this morning in a Chennai (Madras) hospital. Narayan was a pioneer of Indo-Anglian writers. He had a style of writing which was all his own. He started writing during an age when writing fiction meant storytelling and there are few people dead or alive who could tell stories the way Narayan did. He told stories of simple folks trying to live their simple lives in a changing world. His characters were ordinary Indians trying to blend tradition with modernisation, resulting in often tragi-comic situations. One could get a feel of real India , especially South India , through his writings. He wrote in English but his writings conveyed a unique flavour as if he were writing in the native tongue. His style- simple, unpretentious and witty- won him admirers throughout the globe. His admirers included Somerset Maugham, John Updike and Graham Green, who called him the "novelist I admire most in the English

His novels are characterised by Chekhovian simplicity and gentle humour. Characters in his novels tend to be very down-to-earth. His novels are all set in an imaginary place called Malgudi which is a typical South Indian town.
His writing career began with Swami and Friends. At first, he could not get the novel published. He then sent a draft to Graham Greene, who liked it so much that he arranged for its publication. Greene was to remain a close friend of his. After that, he published a continuous stream of novels, all set in Malgudi and each dealing with different characters in that fictional place. Autobiographical content forms a significant part of some of his novels, for example, The English Teacher.
Most of his novels deal with the humdrum of everyday life. In fact, his work has sometimes been criticised for being excessively simplistic and for sometimes being cliched.

R. K. Narayan
Rasipuram Krishnaswami Ayyar Narayanaswami or R. K. Narayan is one of the most celebrated Indian novelists writing in English. This master storyteller was born on October 10, 1906 in Madras or present-day Chennai . Most of his stories were set in the fictional South Indian town of Malgudi. His works captured the essence of ordinary life. He began with his first novel Swami and Friends in 1935. Besides novels, he wrote short stories, travelogues, condensed versions of Indian epics in English besides his memoir.
Born to a schoolteacher father, he took the name R. K. Narayan at the suggestion of Graham Greene. He learnt Tamil and English in school. He did his initial studies at the residence of his grandmother before moving back with his parents when his father was appointed headmaster of the Maharaja's High School in Mysore.

Contact Us NRIOL.COM - NRI Experiences My America - By RK Narayan At the American Consulates the visa issuing section is kept busy nowadays as more and more young men seek the Green Card or profess to go on a student visa and many try to extend their stay once they get in. The official handles a difficult task while filtering out the "permanents" and letting in only the "transients". The average American himself is liberal-minded and doesn't bother that more Indian engineers and doctors are swamping the opportunities available in the country possibly to the disadvantage of the American candidate himself. I discussed the subject with Prof. Ainslee Embree of Columbia University who has had a long association with Indian affairs and culture. His reply was noteworthy. "Why not Indians as well? In course of time they will be Americans. The American citizen of today was once an expatriate, a foreigner who had come out of a European or African country. Why not from India too? We certainly love to have Indians in our country." There are however, two views on this subject. The elderly parents of Indians settled in America pay a visit to them, from time to time (on excursion round ticket), and feel pleased at the prosperity of their sons or daughters in America. After a Greyhound tour of the country and a visit to Niagara, they are ready to return home when the suburban existence begins to bore them whether at New Jersey, or The Queens or the Silicon Valley neighborhood of California. But they always say on their return, "After all our boys are happy there. Why should they come back to this country, where they get no encouragement?"

RK Narayanan's My America
Few Indians in America make any attempt to integrate in American cultural or social life. So few visit an American home or a theater or an opera, or try to understand the American psyche. An Indian's contact with the American is confined to his colleagues working along with him and to an official or seminar luncheon. He may also mutter a "Hi!" across the fence to an American neighbor while lawn-mowing. At other times one never sees the other except by appointment, each family being boxed up in their homes securely behind locked doors. After he has equipped his new home with the latest dish-washer, video, etc., with two cars in the garage and acquired all that the others have, he sits back with his family counting his blessings. Outwardly happy, but secretly gnawed by some vague discontent and aware of some inner turbulence or vacuum, he cannot define which. All the comfort is physically satisfying, he has immense "job satisfaction" and that is about all. RK Narayan's My America is a simple-yet-devastatingly ironical look of an Indian's American life. How we can make Mysore pedestrian-friendly
23 April 2007 TARLE SUBBA and ARUN PADAKI R.K. Narayan Chekov is the quintessential Mysore experience. He observed that Mysore was design ed to be walkable. It was design ed to fire imaginations. Years later, though, misfiring pistons have captured the imagination of our city planners. Interventions to calm and control these vehicles have slowly but steadily replaced what was once a pedestrian -friendly city to one that is inconvenient if not outright hostile to pedestrians. However, vehicles are our new reality, as are Seena , the Mysorean, and Bob , the tourist.

# 1, Vellalar Street, Pursavakkom, Madras, India. Malgudi, imitating typical south Indian city, His short story collection Malgudi Days took place in this exciting city of Malgudi. Some of his other novels too were written having Malgudi in mind. He also travelled to United States in 1956 at the invitation of the Rockefeller Foundation. He began his career with writing short stories which were appeared mostly in The Hindu and also worked for some time as the Mysore correspondent for Justice , a Madras-based newspaper. His first work Swami and Friends He wrote his own life history: autobiography, he named it as My Days . A memoir, is an autobiography of R.K. Narayan. My Days The Guide Malgudi Novel . Novel starts with the hero Raju narrating his story. I never knew R.K.Narayan, until my graduation, where my Professor introduced him to me as an Indian writer of English. I started reading his work like, Swami and Friends Malgudi Days My Days The Dark Room The Vendor of Sweets and Waiting for the Mahatma . Really it shows a new dimension to Indian writing in English. We read many novels of western style where we come across western names for all characters and places etc.Normally we never see our own city names in English novels. In 1980, R. K. Narayan was awarded the A.C. Benson award by the Royal Society of Literature and was made an Honorary Member of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters. In 1989 he was made a member of the Rajya Sabha (the non-elective House of Parliament in India). He received the Sahitya Akademi Award for The Guide (1958).
