The Malgudi Man "I'd be quite happy if no more is claimed from me than being just a story-teller. Only the story matters, that is all." R.K. Narayan was famous the world over for his humourous and realistic novels. Remember the Malgudi Days, and that music Ta-na-na-na-na…starts playing in our head. Every one of Narayan's readers knows what Narayan-land is called: Malgudi described as small-town India like any other town with ordinary people, ordinary needs and simple life. Most of his works, starting from his first novel, 'Swami and His Friends' (1935) is set in the fictional town of Malgudi. Once the readers are in this village-town, our guide, the storyteller, awaits them and gets the reader so engrossed through his simple yet vivid description, that a few pages flipped, and one actually feels that one has been to Malgudi.
Born in Madras in 1906, R. K. Narayan had his initial education in Madras (Chennai) and later at the Maharaja's College in Mysore. He lived in Mysore, the place that had maximum influence on him and reflected in his novels till recently, before moving to Chennai where he took his last breath. R.K. Narayan died at a private hospital at Chennai in the early hours of Sunday 13th of May at the age of 95 and is survived by his brother, Mr. R.K. Laxman, the famous cartoonist of the 'common man' fame from the daily - Times of India, son-in-law C S Chandrasekharan and two grandchildren.

MALGUDI MAGIC BACK TO HOME
By V.N. Narayanan
Where the ordinary is extraordinary
I met R.K. Narayan in 1967 on one of his visits to Delhi. I was with two friends, both journalists, who pretended to be intellectuals well acquainted with Narayan's works and how they compared with those of, say, Dickens, Marx, Franz Fanon, et al. All along the way, they were discussing RKN's novels, and characters, as though they were doing a doctorate on the author. My own acquaintance with RKN was more at the mundane level of having read, and greatly enjoyed reading, Swami and Friends Bachelor of Arts The English Teacher and Man-Eater of Malgudi Bachelor of Arts was also someone I know and could empathize with. Everything I read in RKN's stories is familiar and dear to me; I have seen them all around me as I grew up. Swami's grandmother was my own grandmother, indeed everyone's grandmother in South India's Brahmin middle-class households and every town is Malgudi.

R.K. Narayan is one of the most famous and widely read Indian novelists. His stories were grounded in a compassionate humanism and celebrated the humour and energy of ordinary life.
R.K. Narayan was born on October 10, 1906 in Madras. His father was a provincial head master. R.K. Narayan spent his early childhood his maternal grandmother, Parvathi in Madras and used to spend only a few weeks each summer visiting his parents and siblings. R.K. Narayan studied for eight years at Lutheran Mission School close to his grandmother's house in Madras, also for a short time at the CRC High School. When his father was appointed headmaster of the Maharaja's High School in Mysore, R.K. Narayan moved back in with his parents. He obtained his bachelor's degree from the University of Mysore.

to be aired on Doordarshan. The half an hour long show was a treat to watch, because it used to help a six or seven year old imagine the lives of simple folks, living in a small, fictional town called Malgudi. A couple of months back, I came to know that all of us can watch Malgudi Days for free at the Rajshri Website . Only people who can understand Hindi can watch these episodes though. There are no subtitles, unfortunately. Needless to say, I watched each and every episode, back to back, for a couple of days. My favorite episodes still remain the same- a number of old movies , including Abhimaan, Amar Akbar Anthony, Anupama etc. that can be viewed for free at the Rajshri Website. Lovers of Ekta Kapoor will also find older episodes of Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kahaani Ghar Ghar Ki. How many of you have watched the Malgudi Days recently? Which is your favorite episode? R.K. Narayan
The Mahabharata
The Ramayana
Vision Books 1987 A book review by Danny Yee Indian novelist Narayan has produced accessible English translations of the Mahabharata and the Ramayana Bhagavid Gita section of the Mahabharata Mahabharata the five Pandava brothers (Yudhistira, Arjuna, Bhima, Nakula, and Sahadeva) struggle to obtain their inheritance, culminating in the great battle of Kurukshetra. The Ramayana centres on Rama, avatar of Vishnu, covering his marriage, the theft of his wife Sita by the demon-king Ravana, and the search and struggle to recover her. Both epics have a plethora of side stories, covering the adventures of the heroes in exile and the deeds of their supporters and opponents. The epics have been retold and reworked many times (Narayan's Ramayana is itself based on an eleventh century Tamil version by Kamban), but simple accessible versions have an important place. The Mahabharata and the Ramayana pervade south and southeast Asian religion, art, literature, and popular culture; they are a central part of the world's literary heritage and should be better known in the West. To this end, Narayan's versions could be used in schools and read by (or to) children, along with the stories of biblical and Greek mythology. To help those unfamiliar with the setting and context, he includes with each volume a brief introduction, a list of characters, and a glossary of Indian words. 16 January 2001

If, on the other hand, you are like me, then you may find yourself, after the first ten minutes, reading on for 20, then 30, gobbling up one tale after the next, eventually looking up and realizing that a good portion of your day has passed. When I discovered this book, my own days were, much like these stories, intensely brief and full. I had recently given birth to my daughter, was caring for my two-year-old son, and scarcely had the opportunity to comb my hair in the mornings, never mind sit down with a book and a cup of tea. For some reason the first thing I did after opening the front cover of Malgudi Days The stories in Malgudi Days The Hindu Malgudi Days and Other Stories (1947) and Lawley Road and Other Stories

R. K. Narayan - Book by Book
Posted August 7th, 2007 by jon 30-Sept-Oct-2007 Widely regarded as India’s greatest writer in English in the 20th century, R. K. Narayan (1906–2001) captured the subtle rhythms of modern Indian life. A few decades before Salman Rushdie, Narayan earned international distinction with more than a dozen short realist novels and short stories. Admired by E. M. Forster, Graham Greene, and Somerset Maugham, he reached the height of recognition with his novel The Guide (1958), in which a spiritual charlatan finds faith. Narayan also endeared readers to his fictitious South Indian town of Malgudi, the backdrop for much of his work. A colorful, eccentric, and familiar place, Malgudi enabled Narayan to extract simple, universal truths from small-town tales and speak to a generation leaving the villages for the cities. Simply put, Malgudi and its quirky denizens "put modern Indian writing on the map" (Wyatt Mason, "The Master of Malgudi," The New Yorker With a gentle, unpretentious style and straightforward plotting, Narayan portrayed ordinary people struggling to make sense of their lives as Hindu tradition clashed with modernity and a nascent nationalism eroded a colonial mentality. While Narayan rarely directly addressed India’s tumultuous political or philosophical issues, they defined his characters’ concerns. Still, Hindu ethics and a belief in fate guided his characters—energetic schoolboys, drifters, housewives, rebels, petty financiers, family planners—as they searched for authenticity despite modest means and limited worldviews. Although Narayan depicted poverty and suffering, his compassionate tales were filled with humor, subtle irony, and a deep religious sensibility—so they rarely failed to enlighten.

The concentration of Narayan’s prose is astonishing. While other writers rely on paragraphs and pages to get their points across, Narayan extracts the full capacity of each sentence, so much so that his stories seem bound by an invisible yet essential mechanism, similar to the metrical and quantitative constraints of poetry. here. Among other things, it reveals that he failed the University entrance examination, wept over the stories of consumptive heroines, and kept a picture of Marie Corelli on his bookshelf.
