Instead of fleeing however, they intend travelling into the heart of Chenzeme territory in order to discover the why and who of their persecution. Their journey is a very long one, centuries in fact, but they are able to survive due to the use of cold sleep or ghosting. Most of the crew is able to download copies of themselves, ghosts, which can be left as free floating 'consciences' or made into new flesh if required. This book interested me so much at the start that I had made my mind up to read the first few books leading up to this one (The Bohr Maker, Tech-Heaven and Deception Well). By books end I thought differently. Not that the story wasn't enjoyable, it just took a little too long to deliver.

I have compiled a list of recommended readings around a set of themes we are using in the course. This list of books is by no means a definitive list of any kind. What I have tried to do is to give some historical perspective to books in the genre that I believe are good representatives of the quality literature. Many of the titles are considered classics by many critics, some titles are simply my own personal favorites. Many of the titles could easily fit into one or more of the theme categories I've created. Reference Sources on Science Fiction Literature: This list includes many resource guides on science fiction literature over the last three decades. This is by no means a definative list but gives you an indication of how far the genre has come in terms of literary criticsm.

    Notes from the Editor
Xmas 1995 we breakfasted on fresh bread from the bread making machine. This diabolical R2D2 unfortunately wakes me when the timer starts the kneading stage, some three hours before the bread is ready. Xmas brought me a stainless steel frying pan, a microwave popcorn popper, a fridge thermometer, a microwave pizza tray, a microwave browning dish, a frozen food defrosting plate (actually a metal heat sink), a soft drink can sealer, several varieties of drink can holders for the fridge, and a book on the prospects of increasing human longevity. Not likely, with all that encouragement to overeat. I am delighted to have a week off between Xmas and New Year, as I can now work furiously getting a few fanzines done. It was, for example, never my intention that Gegenschein become an annual, yet #71 was November 1994, and many fans still don't have copies of #72, nominally (ha!) completed in August 1995. With us travelling to the USA for the second time in the year in October 1995, I just didn't have the time to mail the issue. Nor, really, did I want to spend the postage money, even seamail, on zines that might well be caught and lost in the Xmas mail madness. I did hand deliver a certain number at Ditto in Seattle, like Corflu, a convention at which one sees a certain welcome concentration of fanzine fans. However a distressing proportion have waited until after Xmas 1995! I regret this delay.

    http://infinityplus.co.uk/nonfiction/vastrev.htm
Vast by Linda Nagata (Bantam Spectra, $5.99, 403 pages, paperback; published August 1998.) There's one big problem with writing about space travel. Either you ask your readers to buy into all those convenient wormholes just waiting to take the characters where they need to go, like some intergalactic underground. Or else you and the readers have to accept that travelling from A-B is going to take a mind-numbing number of years, never mind travelling from A-Z which is going to take more centuries than anyone wants to read about. With Vast , Linda Nagata goes the long-haul route that says, Hey, travel is mind-numbing and my characters are all stuck in a spaceship that's long, thin and none too pleasant - and they'd better learn to live with it because the alternative is they go mad, if they haven't already. In fact, Vast is like nothing so much as Das Boot in space. The author also assumes a certain amount of previous knowledge of the characters; with the action continuing on from where Deception Well ended... 'Ex-human' Lot - still infected by the Cult virus - is travelling aboard a thousands-of-years-old organic space ship the Null Boundary. Lot and those with him are in search of the truth about the Chenzeme, an ancient, maybe already dead, mutated or evolved alien race who - millions of years back - fashioned hunter/killer spaceships programmed to destroy any sentient race they meet.

Underrated SF Classic: Linda Nagata's "Tech Heaven"
By Annalee Newitz There are books that get you all goose-bumpy while you read them, and there are books you feel obligated to think about very hard because you know they're classics. Then there are the books that don't do either, but surprise you by turning into stories that you never forget. At odd moments, a scene from the book will jump into your head. Or you'll find yourself pondering an idea raised by the author over and over again. Such is the case with Linda Nagata's 1995 near-future nanopunk novel Tech Heaven . I bought it in the used-book basement of Harvard Bookstore in Cambridge, despite the silly title and cheesy cover, probably because I was desperate for new science fiction and nanotech is cool. It turned out to be one of the most haunting SF books I've read. Tech Heaven is a futuristic thriller about Katie, a woman whose husband Tom is about to die of injuries sustained in a helicopter crash. Instead of dying, he gets his body cryogenically preserved so that he can be reawakened when med-tech is advanced enough to heal him. The problem is that it winds up taking far more than the estimated few years for this to happen.
In fact, Katie grows old and nearly dies waiting for nanotech to be invented that can fix Tom (and her own aged body). In the process, she gets involved in political struggles over cryogenics and nanotech, and there's plenty of action as she flees hostile political factions with the help of a robot into whose mind she can project her consciousness. What stuck with me most, though, were the finely-drawn characters: Katie's bitterly desperate personal entanglements with Tom's former best friend (and maybe lover), as well as her strange relationship with the young man she takes as a lover while she waits for Tom's cure, are full of the sort of subtle motivations you rarely see outside literary writing. Especially impressive are Nagata's visceral descriptions of what Katie feels like as her body grows old and feeble while her husband remains young and frozen in time.

    Awful (0/5)
I first read this in June 2000. For thirty million years, the destroyer ships of the Chemzene have coursed through space, destroying the populations of worlds, of whole star systems. Now the colonies on the frontier of the human galactic civilisation are being attacked. This is a sequel to the Bohr Maker and Deception Well, but hundreds of years have passed since those events. Letto, the protagonist of those books, has lived on, now largely as a virtual personality within the computer systems of the spaceship "Null Boundary". With him, although in corporeal form rather than electronic, are Lot, Urban and Clemantine and Deneb, a reincarnation of one of Null Boundaries original crew. They are after the Chemzene, and with luck the Null Boundary, clad in an artificial skin of Chemzene "philosopher cells", will be able to masquerade as a Chemzene vessel long enough to find out how to destroy the destroyers. This hypothesis will be tested sooner rather than later, since the Null Boundary has been chased by a Chemzene ship for the past one hundred and fifty years, and their pursuer is catching up.
