THE AMBIVALENT CASE OF REPETITIONS IN LITERARY TRANSLATION. AVOIDING REPETITIONS: A "UNIVERSAL" OF TRANSLATION?
Nitsa Ben-Ari
Tel Aviv University, Tel Aviv, Israel
Meta, XLIII, 1, 1998
Abstract
Although repetitions have a major function in literary texts, avoiding repetitions is one of the most recurrent norms of translation. So much so that it may be more accurate to refer to it as a "universal" of translation. The techniques of avoiding repetition vary from cancelling them altogether to replacing them with synonyms. When such solutions are impossible, translators may revert to "announcing" the repetition. Avoiding repetitions is predominant in canonised and semi-canonised texts as well, the only variation being the number of cases and the crudity of the solution. In semi-canonised texts which have, in the process of translation, undergone a change of genre, avoiding repetition must be regarded as part of a larger normative complex. In non-canonised literature, the "liberties" taken by translators are such that it would be unprofitable to look for an adequate rendering of repetitions. Within the overall framework of norms, repetitions are sometimes added to translated texts. They are of a different nature, however, stemming as it were from repertoremic, normative constraints.

    Introduction
Robert Musil (1880-1942), the Austrian utopian novelist and essayist, wrote two unsuccessful plays, two novels, one, The Man Without Qualities , unfinished, and many shorter works. Since his death, work has progressed in collecting and editing his literary remains. In 1990, a group of scholars at the Klagenfurt University School of Education, in Musil's home town, began, with the help of the (the Fund for the Advancement of Scholarly Research in Austria) to develop software for text retrieval from fulltext databases using personal computers. The result of this work is PEP ( . The linguistic selection program for the transcription and documentation of the literary remains of Robert Musil. The acronym is extracted from Philologische ErschliessungsProgramm The textbase reproduces the literary remains of Robert Musil in two planes: the transcription of the collected manuscripts is a precise rendering of each individual sheet of the manuscript; the accompanying information about the physical composition and state of the Musil manuscripts is a precise description of each document including such items as the type and composition of the paper, the kind of writing implement and color of the writing, the author and the published source. An intermediate result of the selection process of is a list of manuscripts with references to each edition.

    54. Robert Musil The Man Without Qualities
robert musil is bound to look hopelessly old fashioned. His masterpiece, The Man Without Qualities, is drenched from start to finish in ideas.
    http://www.greatbooksguide.com/Musil.html
The novel of ideas is dead. Of course, we never read the obituary. It
was one of those deaths that is hushed up, kept out of the
newspapers. It happened around the time Moses Herzog started writing
those crazy philosophical letters to dead people. Ideas, once the gold
quaint these days became the currency of the unhinged. The mantra

Serious ideas once gave dignity to a work of fiction. Remember the
Grand Inquisitor in Dostoevsky? Or those great debates between the
humanist Settembrini and the radical Naphta in The Magic Mountain These passages are brilliant, exhilarating and . . . hopelessly old- fashioned. Even when a contemporary novelist borrows the trappings Special Topics in Calamity Physics the metaphysical trappings are just there for decoration. The plot moves on in cinematic fashion, brilliantly so, and the reader never needs to complete a syllogism or dust off an abstract concept. Why did the novel of ideas fall out of favor? Perhaps our distrust of concepts is hard earned, due to recently completing a century in which

But as Matthew Musil talked to other veterans and family members, he realized there was something else he could do with the gathering.
It stems from the way many Vietnam veterans were treated upon returning from war, Keegan said. Keegan was the informal master of ceremonies Saturday. Around 7 p.m., he called for attention and read a list of names of Genoa residents who are active service members. Eide, Hensley, Musil and Rylko were among the 47 names called by Keegan. Another man, Matt Morris, arrived later. Three of the names were of people killed in action. During his prayer, Schmidt asked God to bless all military members.

    Musil's Agitational Prose
Historian Roman Urbaner has discovered a text written by Austrian author Robert Musil as editor of a military publication at Christmas 1916. According to Urbaner, the text is surprisingly conformist, pro-war prose. "We wait and know that we will continue to do our duty as long as necessary. We are not to blame if the spring snow turns from white to red. We are defending and they are attacking. This is what our conscience tells us this, as it did two and a half years ago, and that won't help them one bit." » more information (external link, German)
