In 1998, health expenditures in the United States accounted for 12.9% of national income-the highest share of income devoted to health in the developed world. The United States also spends more on medical research than any other country-in 2000, the federal government dedicated $18.4 billion to it, compared with only $3.7 billion for the entire European Union. In this book, leading health economists ask whether we are getting our money's worth.
From an economic perspective, they find, the answer is a resounding "yes": in fact, considering the extraordinary value of improvements to health, we may even be spending too

Kevin M. Murphy Wins 1997 Clark Medal
Kevin M. Murphy, a professor at the University of Chicago, has been awarded the 1997 John Bates Clark Medal of the American Economic Association. The Medal is given only once every two years to the most outstanding American economist under age 40. Murphy, 39, is the George Pratt Shultz Professor of Business Economics and Industrial Relations at the Graduate School of Business. He was cited for his study of the causes of growing income inequality in the U.S. between white-collar and blue-collar workers. Murphy has taught microeconomics to students in the M.B.A. program at the University of Chicago, and also in its executive and Ph.D. programs. He also has taught courses on human resource management. The John Bates Clark Medal was first awarded in 1947 to economist Paul Samuelson. http:// www-news.uchicago.edu /releases/97/970314.murphy.shtml

Do we really have free elections?
Our laws say that any citizen 18 years or more can vote, but shockingly large numbers of people do not register to vote, and of those who are registered, a large percentage do not bother to vote. In fact, the United States ranks 114th in voter turnout in all elections from 1945-1998, compared with other democracies.
Why don't people vote?
One major reason is that many voters feel that they don't have a real choice. They feel that between the two major political parties and their candidates there generally is not too much difference. Many Americans want an alternative. But and here is the hitch independents and alternative parties find the cards stacked against them. A maze of laws and regulations, varying from state to state, is like a barbed-wire fence around the polls. Most Americans don't know these facts about the electoral process:
  • It takes 675,000 petition signatures for an independent or minor party presidential candidate to get on the ballot in all 50 states that is 26 times the number needed by a Democratic presidential candidate.

Earth Orbit was in San Luis Obispo, California. You could call it an apartment complex, but that's a little bit like calling the Titanic a big boat that sank. A bunch of us lived there for a very long time. The people constituting the bunch changed slowly over the years. Now it's over. But we aren't. Some of us really like computers. A lot of us go to Burning Man . All of us loved in a place where a like-minded co-conspirator is right next door, or downstairs, or across the parking lot. This is our homepage, because we no longer have a home.
