Not Knowing Iris Murdoch
By Inigo Thomas
Posted Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002, at 2:22 PM ET I spoke to Iris Murdoch on the telephone on a couple of occasions, if only to say on each, "Hello. Is John Bayley there?" The paper where I then worked wanted to ascertain when Oxford's Wharton Professor of English might be submitting his review. When the article then arrived, one would occasionally find a supermarket receipt Bayley had accidentally placed inside the envelope—the sherry and the pilchards listed in these receipts gave some of idea of the fuel that kept the Murdoch-Bayley household going. Along with Murdoch's novels and Bayley's book about his wife, this is all I know about Iris Murdoch—although a paragraph in an article she wrote for the

Writer Philosopher
Irish-English writer Iris Murdoch's long career as a novelist, playwright, critic and philosophy professor came to an end in the 1990s because of Alzheimer's disease. Murdoch was made a fellow in 1948 of St. Anne's College, Oxford, where she taught philosophy until 1963. Her writing career began in earnest after she made a splash with her 1953 study of the philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre . The next year she published Under the Net , the first of more than two dozen novels. From the 1950s through the 1980s she earned a reputation as a prolific writer and deep thinker, cranking out essays on the art of fiction ("Against Dryness") and moral issues (collected in 1967's The Sovereignty of Good and Other Concepts ), and achieving success with novels such as A Severed Head The Sea, The Sea (1978) and The Good Apprentice (1985). Her novels are famously chock full of unlikely incidents and complicated storylines, and reveal a belief in the power of art and mythology as a tool to understand something greater than the self. Celebrated especially in England, Murdoch was made a Dame of the British Empire in 1987. In the mid-1990s she began showing symptoms of Alzheimer's disease, a development detailed in

Creative Quotations from . . . Iris Murdoch
(1919-1999) born on Jul 15 Irish author. "She wrote 26 thought-provoking novels, e.g., "Black Prince," 1973 and "The Good Apprentice," 1985, and "Jackson's Dilemma," 1995." We live in a fantasy world, a world of illusion. The great task in life is to find reality."
"All artists dream of a silence which they must enter, as some creatures return to the sea to spawn." Writing is like getting married. One should never commit oneself until one is amazed at one's luck. Happiness is a matter of one's most ordinary everyday mode of consciousness being busy and lively and unconcerned with self. A bad review is even less important than whether it is raining in Patagonia.

Iris Murdoch's Holy Fool
By Peter J. Conradi , Reply by Jonathan Raban
In response to Cracks in the House of Rove April 12, 2007 To the Editors In his recent fine review of Andrew Sullivan's The Conservative Soul: How We Lost It, How to Get It Back NYR , April 12] Jonathan Raban identifies the character of Hugo in Iris Murdoch's first published novel, Under the Net (1954), a holy fool, with Sullivan's mentor Michael Oakeshott. Murdoch herself thought she based Hugo on Wittgenstein's pupil Yorick Smythies (as I showed in Iris Murdoch: A Life , 2001). Her journals assert this; and when Smythies died in 1982 she even wrote this death into the novel she was then composing, The Philosopher's Pupil . Of course the character of Hugo could have composite origins, and the Oakeshott possibility is a novel one that would surely interest Murdoch admirers. Is Raban's source for this identification Sullivan himself? Peter Conradi
London Jonathan Raban replies: I defer to Peter Conradi on this. My only source for suggesting that Hugo was based on Oakeshott is the Michael Oakeshott Association, on whose Web site an extract from Under the Net is published, along with the cautious speculation, "Some of Oakeshott's friends and students believed the character of Hugo in this novel was based on Oakeshott." Alerted by another reader, I checked the relevant pages of Conradi's biography of Murdoch, which convincingly show that Yorick Smythies is much the more likely candidate, although, as Conradi says, Hugo might be a "composite," and firmly identifying fictional characters with real people is always a slippery business.

A noted philosopher and one of the most gifted and prolific novelists of the twentieth century, Iris Murdoch has anticipated and shaped many of the issues central to current ethics. These include the relation between human identity and ideas of the good, the effect of the modern critique of religion on moral thought, the relation between ethics and literature, and the contemporary debate about liberalism. In the most comprehensive engagement with Murdoch's work to date, this volume gathers contributions from philosophers, theologians, and a literary critic to explore the significance of her ideas for contemporary thought.
Inspired by Murdoch's tenacious wrestling with basic questions of human existence, these essays not only clarify her thoughts on human goodness, but also move beyond the academy to reflect on how we can and ought to undertake the human adventure in our daily lives.

Because the last, painful part of Iris Murdoch's life has been so picked over, Peter Conradi makes the decision to concentrate on the mistier early years. This, in theory, is a good idea: we desperately need a reminder of Murdoch as a strong, healthy animal to set against John Bayley's version of "Iris" as a babyish old lady. There is a danger, otherwise, that one of the most important literary practitioners of the 20th century will be reduced to a sentimental symbol of Alzheimer's cruel levelling tendency. Yet while Conradi tells the story of Murdoch's journey from Badminton to Somerville, to the Treasury, to the Austrian refugee camps and then back to Oxford in great and competent detail, it is when he gets to the Murdoch whom he knew personally that the book really comes alive. It was in 1960, he tells us in his introduction, that he first encountered a school library copy of
