Do you agree with the selection? Click here and post your comments Iris Murdoch (1919-99) was one of the most admired novelists of the Sixties and Seventies. Her novels evoked beautifully the atmosphere of the country gardens ( The Bell , 1958) or the mysterious London streets ( The Time of the Angels , 1968) in which they were set, with their characters engaged in intriguing love relationships, from the totally innocent to the wholly weird.

This picture was painted in the usual corner of my studio in Peckham. Iris is sitting in my usual sitter's chair, half looking out of the window: sometimes, if intriguing people passed by, or dogs (a liking for which we do not share), she would lean out of position to get a better look. Since Iris lives in Oxford and comes to London only for the occasional crowded day or two, sittings were irregular. The work in fact spanned three years and involved about fifteen sittings in all, each lasting a couple of hours or so with a break or two for coffee. When I first met Iris (at a dinner party given by Michael Kustow ) we talked about Titian's Flaying of Marsyas which we had both just seen at the magnificent Venice exhibition at the Royal Academy. When the National Portrait Gallery commissioned me to paint her portrait I recalled our conversation (about whom we most identified with in the picture) and started a fairly hasty copy of the picture to act as a backdrop so that she might sit in front of the head of Marsyas. My original image of Iris was quickly formed. She has a luminous presence and the visual metaphor that my head created was of an electric light bulb in that gloomy corner, glowing, casting out darkness. I suppose this is what people of a mystical bent call an 'aura'.

  • 1. Significance of Iris Murdoch in the 20th Century
When Iris Murdoch died in February 1999, she was described by Melvyn Bragg and A S Byatt, amongst many others, as one of the most significant British writers of the twentieth century. Study of Murdoch's work is central to an understanding of the development of the twentieth-century novel, and her work is now studied on undergraduate and post-graduate courses throughout the UK and in America. As a working moral philosopher and novelist, the intellectual agenda that Murdoch pursues is at once philosophical, practical and useful: 'A moral philosophy,' she has said, 'must be inhabited,' and her themes centre on fundamental moral concerns. She explores concepts of freedom, the problematic nature of sexual desire, what actions constitute goodness, strategies for dealing with intense suffering, and she celebrates the redemptive power of love while illustrating its fragility. All such issues are framed in an imaginative exploration of the ways human consciousness can be expressed in art and conducted by means of fascinating experimentation with the novel form.

The Iris Murdoch Building The Iris Murdoch Building houses the Centre and provides an impressive set of facilities including a conference suite, training facilities and accommodation. It is unusual in that it has been purpose designed to ensure those working and visiting with dementia will feel as comfortable and relaxed as possible. While it is commonplace for public buildings now to consider access for those with impaired mobility or sight, the Centre is one of the first purpose built facilities to provide an environment for those specifically with dementia. The building would not have been possible without the financial support of the Scottish Executive, together with donations from many trusts and foundations. What makes the building different The building was designed to be dementia friendly. When you are in it you can always see where you are and where you want to go. It is important that the rooms and their functions look familiar. The bedrooms and sitting room are homely while the kitchen cupboards are glazed so you can see exactly where you put the cornflakes. The floor surfaces are designed so that if your sense of perspective is diminished, you will feel more confident of knowing where the steps and stairs are. Even the light switches are highlighted with colour.

Iris Murdoch tried to convey 'the unique strangeness of human beings'
Iris Murdoch had a literary career of remarkably consistent success. Her novels won numerous awards, including the Booker and Whitbread Prizes, and three of them were adapted for the West End stage. She was born in Dublin of Anglo-Irish parents, and was an only child. But she spent just a year in Ireland, apart from her early holidays, and was brought up in London. She went to the Froebel Institute and to Badminton School before reading classics Somerville College, Oxford.
Every book she wrote was planned in meticulous detail beforehand
After a spell at the Treasury during the war she spent four years working in UN refugee camps, before returning to Oxford to teach philosophy at St Anne's College. She published her first book, an introduction to the philosophy of Sartre, in 1953, and 12 months later, at the age of 35, her first novel, Under the Net.

Iris Murdoch was born in Blessington Street, Dublin, in 1919. Following the Irish War of Independence, the family moved to Chiswick, near London. In the latter years of the Second World War, she helped with the UN Rehabilitation and Relief Association in Belgium and Austria, before returning to England where she resumed an academic career.
In 1952, she met and subsequently married John Bayley, the writer and critic. His memoir, Iris, describes her as 'religious without religion'. The film based on this memoir was released in 2002, starring Dame Judi Dench, Kate Winslet, Hugh Bonneville and Jim Broadbent .
Her awards include The James Tait Memorial Prize, the Whitbread Literary Award and the Booker Prize, for which she was nominated six times. In 1987, she was made a Dame of the British Empire. IRIS MURDOCH'S EVERYDAY "METAPHYSICAL ENTITIES"
    David Robjant
I offer this paper as an exposition of Murdoch’s Platonic understanding of ‘ordinary language’, as developed in a series of articles and papers in the 1950’s. Language became then and remains now the fundamental subject matter of most Philosophy, so much so that our pictures and expectations of Philosophy itself have been altered. Murdoch’s views on this development are poorly understood, I believe, and under-consulted. For Murdoch is the bearer of one substantial tradition of metaphysics, and yet is at the same time prepared to enter that description of ordinary language that was and is believed to offer the dissolution of metaphysics. That she did not see things that way, and continued to speak of The Good, signals either that she had simply misunderstood, or that she has something rare and interesting to say about the relationship between ordinary language and metaphysics. In this paper I shall argue for the latter view. I shall conduct my exposition as follows. I will (1) describe two very different pictures of ‘metaphysics’. I will then (2) indicate the ancient origin of and support for Murdoch’s peculiar picture. Finally I will (3) expand Murdoch’s picture of metaphysics to show how she applies it to ordinary language.
