  • Bharati Mukherjee 1940-
Indian-born American novelist, short story writer, nonfiction writer, and journalist.
    INTRODUCTION
    Biographical Information
In 1940, Mukherjee was born in Calcutta, India, to wealthy Brahmin parents, and was brought up in a large extended household of over fifty family members. Mukherjee's parents and their three daughters moved to London in 1948 to escape the civil unrest brought on by India's independence and partition. There the girls attended school and became fluent in English. In 1951 the family returned to Calcutta, and Mukherjee continued her English-language instruction at the Loretto Convent School, a missionary institution run by Irish nuns. In 1959 she received a B.A. in English from the University of Calcutta; two years later she earned a Master's degree in English and Ancient Indian Culture from the University of Baroda. In 1961 Mukherjee received a scholarship to study writing at the University of Iowa's Writer's Workshop, where she first earned a Masters of Fine Arts and then a Ph.D. While at Iowa she met the Canadian writer Clark Blaise, whom she married in 1963 against the wishes of her Bengali family, who had arranged for her to be married to an Indian nuclear physicist. In 1966 the couple moved to Montreal, where Mukherjee taught English at McGill University. Three years later they moved to Toronto with their two small children where Mukherjee, now a Canadian citizen, began work on her first novel.

... India`s leading Yellow pages directory. Wife , Bharati Mukherjee Wife as the name suggests is the story of a wife. The novel centers on the character Dimple Mukherjee, who grows, matures, rebels, kills and finally dies in this novel. The title thus aptly echoes the storyline.
    Synopsis:
This non-fictional creature of Bharati Mukherjee is published by one of the famous publishing houses Fawcett.
The main character depicted in `Wife` is regarded as a weak one as she fails to make the transition from one world to another. The matchless storytelling method of Bharati Mukherjee` which contoured her later works is still seen in this particular novel.

    A Declaration of Independence
She'd lived her entire childhood by the rules. Then, one day, Bharati Mukherjee slid into the driver's seat.
As a bookish child in Calcutta, I used to thrill to the adventures of bad girls whose pursuit of happiness swept them outside the bounds of social decency. Tess of the d'Urbervilles, Emma Bovary and Anna Karenina lived large in my imagination. The naughty girls of Hollywood films flirted and knew how to drive. These reckless women felt more real to me than the unselfish relatives I was expected to emulate. Growing up in an old-fashioned Bengali Hindu family and going to a convent school run by stern Irish nuns, I was brought up to revere rules. Without rules, there was only anarchy.
My mother's rules had to do with feminine deportment, so I never played hard enough to break a toy or muddy my dress. My father's rules had to do with never shaming the family by even a hint of scandal, and not providing business rivals with an opportunity to kidnap me or throw acid in my face. (There are real consequences to disobedience.) Good behavior meant not falling in love until my father found the right bridegroom and never protesting his decrees. Kidnap-proofing meant never traveling to and from school in a car without a driver, two armed guards and my watchful mother.
Not, not, not. Never, never, never.

Get more information about this book Plot Summary of Desirable Daughters "Tara Chatterjee, divorced from her wealthy entrepreneur husband is living in San Francisco with a hippie carpenter. She is one of three sisters from a wealthy Brahmin family from East Bengal.
The plot swings back and forth from the small village in East Bengal where her ancestors live and San Francisco. There's a strong contrast between Tara, who is very assimilated, and her two older sisters, both of whom have held on to their Indian traditions. Yet it is Tara who visits East Bengal in an attempt to learn about her ancestors - in particular a distant great or great-great aunt who was married to a tree and played a major role in the struggle for Indian independence.
In the San Francisco part of the story, Tara is approached by a young man who says he is the illegitimate son of her
oldest sister, who now lives in New Jersey. Her sister is extremely traditional - wears saris, eats only Indian food, etc. Tara gradually learns that her sister did, in fact, have an illegitimate child, but the question is whether the young man who has approached her is that son or a con man?
Though the suspense builds as we learn more and more about the young man, the mystery is secondary. The main focus is the pull of two cultures. Tara and her teenage son exemplify the Indian trying to meld with American culture. Her sisters - one in New Jersey and one in Bombay - hold onto traditional culture in the face of pressures to assimilate.

    A Critique of Bharati Mukherjee's Neo-nationalism
Anne Brewster Generally, in Australia, discussions of what is often called 'migrant writing' draw attention to the marginality of this discourse and the ways in which it interrogates the literary canon. These discussions position 'ethnicity' as oppositional to nationalism as, for example, Sneja Gunew argues: In its traditional usage, culture is associated with the nation state; but because most such entities are now increasingly aware of their multicultural mix, the concept of cultural minorities or ethnicities is useful in undermining a centrist construction of culture as a privileged discourse concerned with the definition of core values ... The recognition of 'ethnicity' as a category of difference thus serves as a safeguard against the development of imperialisms or 'nationalisms'. (1990: 24-5) In contrast to this general line of argument which is dominant in Australia, Bharati Mukherjee's discourse on migrants in the U.S. positions them not on the margin of contemporary American culture but, rather, as exemplars of a hegemonic nationalism. She characterises her writing about migrants not as oppositional to mainstream America but as representing the voice of 'the new America' (1989: 73) and thus, I would argue, enunciates a neo-nationalism. Her own literary success places her firmly within the American literary canon and this success reflects the receptivity of certain constituencies to a reinvention and revitalisation of American nationalism.
