Farley's Ark: The Farley and Claire Mowat Conservation Land
In September 2007 Farley Mowat, his wife Claire, and their friends and supporters gathered in St. Peter's, Cape Breton to share exciting news about one of Farley's favourite subjects-the environment. That day Farley Mowat and the Nature Trust jointly announced his donation of some 200 acres of his southwestern Cape Breton coastal property as "Forever Wild" conservation land. Mowat, a passionate conservationist, an officer of the Order of Canada, and a world-renowned Canadian author, has long been an outspoken advocate for preserving and caring for our natural world. His new partnership with the Nature Trust is, in many ways, the next logical step in a life that has been deeply influenced by the struggle for environmental awareness and action. Farley and Claire Mowat came to Cape Breton 30 years ago, searching for a new home. What they found is land that Mowat describes as sacred; as representing what he most wanted to find-a really viable sanctuary, where they could live simply, at peace with the birds and other animals, and where nature could be left to live undisturbed. It has been the Mowats' writing retreat and spiritual home ever since.

Lost in the Barrens - Farley Mowat
Farley Mowat's Lost in the Barrens is a prime example of a piece of children's literature that helps to advance the plot, and more importantly, convey a dual sense of both an antagonist against the boys' struggle, and a benefactor, through portraying the local environment as a sentient force in the book. The land is seen not as an environment in which the boys are placed, so much as an enigmatic character in the story, whose allegiance and intentions are difficult to surmise. The boys originally contest the land and try to overcome it, but gradually become aware of the need to co-exist and respect the land, to eventually return home. Primarily seen as an antagonist to the boys' attempts to survive and return home, the land is harshly termed, evoking images of a domineering, relentless enemy. “The loneliness and immensity of the new wilderness seemed to close down upon them" (Mowat, 28), the boys are overwhelmed by this awesome new force which till now has never had such a direct impact on their lives, even without doing anything, merely its presence over the boys, is enough to induce a sense of unfriendliness. The barrenlands encompass long stretches of seemingly endless abysses, a vivid backdrop to

Farley Mowat joins the Green Party
Wednesday, 13 June, 2007 The following is a letter from Farley Mowat: Dear Green Party Friend: Eighty-six years as participant and observer have convinced me we are facing an ecological and environmental crisis that could precipitate the greatest die-off in the history of our planet. The current situation is so ominous and the potential for disaster so diverse and imminent as to threaten not just human life but all of animate creation. If this sounds like Chicken Little, it is because this time the sky truly may be falling. The unwillingness of the powers-that-be to accept the scope and urgency of the threat convinces me that the cement-heads who currently control our destiny are incapable of responding to the approaching tornado. They will remain engrossed in their own self-interests, trusting that a consortium of super-science, technology, and the Entrepreneurial Gods will see them safely into Heaven on Earth.
I don’t believe it will. Which is why I am now giving my support to the Green Party, the only political entity demonstrating a real and potential effective concern for the planet and its myriad inhabitants.

In 1957, Farley Mowat shipped out aboard one of Newfoundland's famous coastal steamers, tramping from outport to outport along the southwest coast. The indomitable spirit of the people and the bleak beauty of the landscape would lure him back again and again over the years. In the process of falling in love with a people and a place, Mowat also met the woman who would be the great love of his life. More

Mowat, Farley
Farley Mowat fonds. 1924-2005; predominant 1947-2005. 46.12 m of textual records and other material. Farley Mowat was born on 12 May 1921 in Belleville, Ont. and educated at the University of Toronto. In 1952 he published People of the Deer , a book about the Ihalmiut people of the Barrenlands, the first of his many books with a northern theme. Other popular Mowat themes are stories that involve the sea, Newfoundland and the protection of the environment and all living creatures. He is a man of strong opinions who has described himself as a "rampant nationalist" and a "story-teller who is more concerned with reaching his audience than with garnering kudos from the arbiters of literary greatness." Among the many honours and awards that he has received is an honorary doctorate from McMaster University in 1994. Books have been catalogued separately. A listing of books that accompanied the fifth accrual is available in the master file. A listing of books that accompanied the fourteenth accrual is appended to the finding aid.
