Farley Mowat Donates Land to NS Nature Trust: We Challenge CLC To Do Same in PEI
Author Farley Mowat and his wife, author Claire Mowat. Well-known Canadian author Farley Mowat recently donated 200 acres of his Cape Breton property to the Nova Scotia Nature Trust. WE SAY: PEI IS TEETERING ON THE SAME EDGE! Obviously, the perfect example of what Farley is talking about is what may happen to the Upton Farmlands.  As you know, the Canada Lands Company (an arm of the federal government) is intent on selling this piece of PEI coastline, bought and paid for by the taxpayers of Canada decades ago, to real estate developers to be used for tract housing.  CLC wants to divide up this beautiful property, located in an area of Charlottetown that already has hundreds of serviced housing lots for sale,  and sell it off piece by piece for yet another subdivision.  We, and groups such as the PEI Shellfishers, have repeatedly asked that the Upton Farmlands be donated to the citizens of PEI for an urban forest and for recreational use.

Farley Mowat
(b. 1921) This 'sissy nature kid' , as some of his Saskatoon school chums called him, turned his passion for nature into great literary success. One of Canada's most popular authors, Farley Mowat developed a love for nature while wandering the riverbanks of Saskatoon as a youth. Described as "a Canadian environmental and literary icon," his works of non-fiction dealing with the environment, the North, and Inuit life are immensely popular worldwide. Fifteen million copies of his 39 books have been published in 40 countries and 52 languages. He is also an award winning juvenile fiction writer. Mowat spent four formative years (1933-37) in Saskatoon, where his father was working as a librarian. His first writing appeared in Nature Lore, a self-published periodical he sold at a Depression sensitive variable price of 5 or 10 cents. The profits went to feed ducks and geese that were unable to migrate and stayed in the water discharged from the City's coal-fired electrical plant. In his mid-teens he wrote a column on birds for Saskatoon's Star-Phoenix, until it was cancelled due to his controversial opinions. Protest ILLEGAL Japanese Whaling
The government has stripped the Canadian flag from a ship named after one of the country's most popular authors and conservationists, Farley Mowat. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society is using the vessel to stop Japanese fleets from illegally killing endangered whales in the Antartic Whale Sanctuary.
The Canadian-registered yacht, was first detained in South Africa last year. Canada registered no complaint and refused to help. Last August, Transport Canada revoked its registration, turning the Farley Mowat into a pirate vessel. It has since failed to retain and keep new registration from another country. The Japanese government is pressuring countries not to register it. If you don't have a flag to sail under, naval law allows the crew of any ship to detain your crew and confiscate and seize your property.
Under pressure from Japan, Canada is impeding the ability of those devoted to protecting the whales Canada and Japan have become complicit in the illegal killing of whales in Antartic waters. Canadians love whales. Shame on the Canadian Government! Shame on the British Government! And shame on the pressure tactics of Japan!

THE CONTRADICTION THAT IS FARLEY MOWAT: Why Conservation Efforts Will Not Survive Mass Immigration
In North America it is runaway population growth, fuelled largely by mass immigration and coupled with excessive consumption that is crowding out wildlife habitat, wetlands and farmland.
The question to be put to the environmental movement is, can nature preserves, greenbelts and national parks permanently shield wildlife and flora from the developmental pressures issuing from this growth?
That is why Albert Bartlett of the University of Colorado established as his Fundamental Law of Planning that a workable, durable local plan cannot be effected in a community until the regional population is stabilized.
One final irony, who was the man who spear-headed the national fund-raising campaign this summer to raise campaign donations for Green Party leader Elizabeth May? None other than Farley Mowat, the man who wants to protect animals, birds, and plant life from human encroachment.
That makes two contradictions.

From the publisher

For many years, Farley Mowat has written of the lands, seas and peoples of the Far North with humor, understanding and compassion. Born in Belleville, Ontario in 1921, Mowat grew up in Belleville, Trenton, Windsor, Saskatoon, Toronto and Richmond Hill as his librarian father moved a household that included a miniature menagerie around the country. During World War II Mowat served in the army, entering as a private and emerging with the rank of captain. Following his discharge, Mowat renewed his interest in the Canadian Arctic, an area he had first visited as a young man with an ornithologist uncle. He began writing for his living in 1949 after spending two years in the Arctic. Since 1949 he has lived in or visited almost every part of Canada and many other lands, including the distant regions of Siberia. He has said of himself, "I am a Northern Man ... I like to think I am a reincarnation of the Norse saga men and, like them, my chief concern is with the tales of men, and other animals, living under conditions of natural adversity." Farley Mowat's 38 books have been published in 24 languages and have sold more than 14 million copies throughout the world.

[Note: contact info. for Australian government officials at end of this e-mail] Cowardly Pirate Whalers Flee from the Whaling Grounds The Sea Shepherd ship Farley Mowat is in Hot Pursuit The Japanese whaling fleet is on the run. The entire fleet is heading northeast out of the whaling area at 14 knots. The Sea Shepherd ship Farley Mowat is in pursuit. The Farley Mowat was heading towards the area where the whalers were operating when they turned and fled northward. Two Greenpeace ships the Esperanza and the Arctic Sunrise are also in pursuit. The Esperanza is able to keep up with the fleet and the Arctic Sunrise is falling behind. The position of the Japanese fleet at 2000 Hours on December 23rd was 62 Degrees 35 minutes South and 143 Degrees and 34 minutes East. This puts the fleet more than 200 miles north of the position where they were discovered whaling on the 21st of December. The Japanese have not been whaling today. They are running. The situation is that one of the Japanese ships is approaching Hobart in Tasmania. The Japanese factory ship and four harpoon vessels are running at full speed away from the whaling area and heading north. Three conservation vessels, two from Greenpeace and one from Sea Shepherd are in pursuit. On the Farley Mowat , Captain Paul Watson believes there are three reasons for them to run. First, the Japanese have one of their ships entering Hobart on the morning of the 24th to drop off a whaler suffering from appendicitis. The Japanese may want to avoid the embarrassment of having one of their ships in an Australian port while the fleet is illegally whaling in the Australian Antarctic Territory. Secondly, Greenpeace is harassing them. Thirdly, they do not want a confrontation with the

Sea Shepherd flagship Farley Mowat intercepts the Japanese whaling fleet at 0400 Hours on Christmas Day
December 24, 2005 : 12:00 AM Sea Shepherd has given the whales a Christmas gift. No whale will be killed on Christmas Day. The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society flagship Farley Mowat intercepted the Japanese whaling fleet at 0400 Hours on Christmas day. [Australian EST (Eastern Summer Time)] Captain Paul Watson calculated a possible interception course by dropping out of the chase behind the Greenpeace ships Esperanza and Arctic Sunrise. He headed due west and caught the fleet as they attempted to head south towards Porpoise Bay. At 0200 Hours they were spotted on radar. The Farley Mowat passed the Esperanza and headed to the Japanese factory ship, the Nisshin Maru, coming alongside.
