Ann Aucote (Australia)
(Documentary crew) I'm a freelance sound recordist based in Melbourne, Australia. I joined the Steve Irwin several days after Xmas as part of the documentary crew. I have long admired the work of the Sea Shepherd's Captain and crew and welcomed the opportunity to help document this campaign. Chris Aultman (USA) (Chief Helicopter Pilot) I suppose that I have always carried with me a concern that would grow into environmental activism. The natural world holds more interest for me than any other. The study of human involvement on the world has been the path that has led me to this campaign. We must change our role in this world if it is to survive. Scott Bell (Tasmania) (Doctor) Scott Bell is a 5th generation Tasmanian. He is married with 5 children. He has voted green for ages, been involved in many environmental campaigns and spent the last 4 years working on remote aboriginal communities in the Gibson Desert. Some of his passions include cooking, furniture working and travel. He is the ship's doctor and gopher. David Bolinger (USA) (Documentary crew) This is a long way from the farm I grew up on in Tennessee. Never did I think I'd find myself in the middle of the Antarctic. But I'm here and enjoying the beauty of nature and getting used to ship life. I've been a vegan for eight days and it's going well. I have a beautiful wife at home and am looking forward to sharing the pictures and experiences from this journey with her.

Have lunch with one of Canada 's most famous authors for both adults and children, join in the conversation on writing and story-telling, and get a taste of his newest book, My Father's Son. We met in a small cafe in downtown Toronto, about a block from Union Stationand I can now say that I've done "the lunch thing" with Farley Mowat. You may not be impressed, but I sure was, because, you see, I grew up with Mutt, the Owls, Happy Adventure , and the wolves. Meeting the man who had actually lived (and written about) all these stories was exciting. We ate lunch and talked about families (he and Claire split their year between a farm in Cape Breton and Port Hope, Ontario); about dogs (two of their dogs "perished" (his word, not mine) last year; they now have just the one); and about writing (specifically, his new book, My Father's Son My Father's Son is Mowat's thirty-first book and his third look back at World War II, following and And No Birds Sang and The Regiment . The book is a collection of letters written from 1943 to 1945 between Farley and his parents, Angus and Helen.

FARLEY MOWAT The "Farley Mowat" is the flagship of the Sea Shepherd Conservation Society which was founded in 1977 by Canadian Paul Watson and which takes its role of Marine Protection and Education from the United Nations World Charter for Nature. Paul Watson who had been one of the original founders of Greenpeace in 1972 left that organisation in 1977 to found the Sea Shepherd Organisation. The vessel was originally to be named "Ocean Warrior" when it was added to the fleet in February 2002 but as this name was already used by another vessel the decision was made to name it after the noted Canadian environmental writer Farley Mowat who is a patron of the Society. Captain Paul Watson - 2002-03 ANTARCTIC ANTI-WHALING CAMPAIGN - The "Farley Mowat" arrived in Auckland harbour in early December 2002 to commence a active compaign against the Japanese Antarctic whaling fleet which was known to have left Japan and was headed for the Southern Ocean. It departed Auckland on December 15th with a crew of 42 to look for the Japanese fleet.

Environmentalists claim this whaling is illegal and destructive, while Japan claims it is scientific research. In the Antarctic, Japanese whaling season has started. Anti-whaling ships, the Farley Mowat and Arctic Sunrise headed by The Sea Shepherd Conservation Society and Green Peace are actively attempting to interfere with a Japanese whaling fleet comprised of the Nisshin Maru and six other whaling vessels. Both groups of ships are in the Southern Ocean Sanctuary , one looking for whales and the other looking for the whalers who hunt them.
    Nine hundred
whales are the target catch for this whaling season to end in several months. The Japanese Whaling Association has issued a press release condeming what it sees as cooperation by Australia in supporting the Sea Shepherd during its current Antarctic mission to disrupt Japanese whaling.

  • Farley (McGill) Mowat 1921–
Canadian novelist, short story writer, nonfiction writer, scriptwriter, and editor. Mowat is a popular and prolific writer for young people and adults. A naturalist, Mowat is an avid lover of the Canadian wilderness, of animals, and of nature and peoples unspoiled by the corruption of technological advances. Much of his writing is based upon his own experiences and adventures. Mowat has been criticized for mixing fiction with fact, especially in his controversial book People of the Deer , in which he blames the Canadian government and traders for the ruin of a once-flourishing Eskimo tribe. He apparently feels that a writer's message is more important than accurate data, for in defense of his "subjective nonfiction" he has said, "Never let facts interfere with the truth." Perhaps Mowat's best-known work for young adults is Lost in the Barrens , which won the Governor General's Award in 1957. This work effectively portrays his concern with the individual's struggle against natural forces. For Mowat, true human dignity lies in the ability to achieve an existence in harmony with nature. Mowat has a special affinity for young adults who, he feels, are not yet affected by the dehumanization of the modern world. He has written: "Writing for children, or rather for young people, is a particular pleasure since most of them have not yet been molded into the formal shapes of technological man; they remain really natural, and therefore really human in my eyes."
