    Farley Mowat
From the film In Search of Farley Mowat
    National Film Board of Canada
For many years, Farley Mowat has written of the lands, seas and peoples of the Far North with humor, understanding and compassion. Born in Belleville, Ontario in 1921, Mowat grew up in Belleville, Trenton, Windsor, Saskatoon, Toronto and Richmond Hill as his librarian father moved a household that included a miniature menagerie around the country. During World War II Mowat served in the army, entering as a private and emerging with the rank of captain. Following his discharge, Mowat renewed his interest in the Canadian Arctic, an area he had first visited as a young man with an ornithologist uncle. He began writing for his living in 1949 after spending two years in the Arctic. Since 1949 he has lived in or visited almost every part of Canada and many other lands, including the distant regions of Siberia. He has said of himself, "I am a Northern Man . . . I like to think I am a reincarnation of the Norse saga men and, like them, my chief concern is with the tales of men, and other animals, living under conditions of natural adversity." Farley Mowat's 38 books have been published in 24 languages and have sold more than 14 million copies throughout the world. His books include:

By Steve Burgess May 11, 1999 F rance has Napoleon, America has John Wayne, Canada has a way of making you stop reading mid-sentence. Head for the movie reviews if you must, but make no mistake the Great White North does have its heroes. Typically, though, there's nothing intrinsically Canadian about them. In fact, their fame is usually the result of having shed that confining distinction. A truly Canadian celebrity is one who elicits the reaction, "I didn't know X was Canadian." Right. That's why X went to a speech therapist. Farley Mowat is different, and is a northern national icon. Mowat's books "People of the Deer" (1952), "Never Cry Wolf" (1963) and "A Whale for the Killing" (1972), among many others tell stories of the wilderness, the animals and the people of a hard, cold, sublimely beautiful land. It's Canada as the world knows it (when the world spares it a thought). But even aside from his celebrations of terrible northern grandeur, Mowat has two other attributes crucial to any quintessentially Canadian celebrity. First, Mowat is openly suspicious of America. And second, Canadians are suspicious of Mowat.

    "The Boat Who Wouldn't Float"
(Reviewed by Judi Clark MAR 2, 1998) Happy Adventure is a schooner with a fatal flaw, it leaks like a sieve. Regardless, Farley is determined to sail this boat. This book was first published in 1969, but is a timeless piece of work. Mowat is a natural story teller and his narrative and anecdotes are brilliant. He wrote this during his eight year residency in Newfoundland. When I read this book, we were rafted up with a Canadian boat in Vero Beach. Our friends didn't believe he had done any of the things that he said he did; they claim he's just a "local" with some good stories. Regardless whether fact or fiction, this book is fun!
