Walter Mosley Keynote
A multiracial crowd of several hundred activists, organizers, and leaders listened intently and laughed wildly as keynote speaker Walter Mosley took them on a candid ride through his latest confrontations with racism and also proposed solutions that he outlines in his recent political manifesto Life Out of Context
Acclaimed novelist and social commentator Mosley did what he does best during his speech Thursday night at Facing Race:
He told stories. Many of them.
Photos by Brian Palmer
Mosley opened his speech with a vignette of stories of times when he attended all-white events and made it his job to inform his peers he was the only black person in the room.
Life Out of Context
Mosley spent a great deal of his speech reading from Life Out of Context, a provocative manifesto calling for people to identify their day-to-day needs and unify around these.
A sci-fi fan, Mosley asked his audience to imagine a future where our political system runs differently. Thinking broadly, Mosley talked about how the two political parties: the Democrats and Republicans should have only 49 percent control of Congress. The rest, being full of different, more representative parties.

It Ain't Easy, Yet Mosley Fearlessly Does It Again: A review of Walter Mosley's "Fearless Jones" A definite must read, but perhaps not the best introduction to Mosley'
In the beginning, there was the petulant question: Why is this not a new Easy Rawlins mystery? By the middle, the question was forgotten as I sunk deeper into the rich new Mosley creation, Fearless Jones. After waiting five years for Mosley to pen a new mystery, I had to force myself to slow down so I could read the book. As with every Mosley book since the Easy Rawlins series that first slapped my face and snagged my attention with the sheer enormous quality of its writing, I began reading in disappointment. Although Mosley remains one of my all-time favorite writers, none of his novels since Easy have been quite as thoroughly engaging. Once I get past that personal grudge and into the meat of Mosley's writing, however; I am consistently pleased by the nuance, detail and character development that combine to make up a Mosley mystery.

Mystery writer Walter Mosley has agreed to write three novels for Riverhead Books, two of which will feature McGill, a sleuth based in New York City. Mosley first used him in the short story "Karma." "I've long thought of Walter Mosley as one of the great American writers," Riverhead executive editor Sean McDonald said in a statement Monday. "His work is consistently provocative and exciting, delivered with a style and power that is uniquely his own." Mosley, 55, is best known for "Devil in the Blue Dress," "Black Betty" and other novels in his Rawlins series. His last book featuring the Los Angeles private eye, "Blonde Faith," was published this fall by Little, Brown and Company.

Walter Mosley born January 12, 1952, Los Angeles, California, U.S.
Walter Mosley, 1996. Lisa Terry/Gamma Liaison African American author of mystery stories noted for their realistic portrayals of segregated inner-city life. Mosley attended Goddard College and Johnson State College, and he became a computer programmer before publishing his first novel, Devil in a Blue Dress In all his Easy Rawlins novels, Mosley used period detail and slang to create authentic settings and characters, especially the earnest, complex main character, who continually is faced with personal, social, and moral dilemmas. In A Red Death (1991), set during the McCarthy era, Rawlins is blackmailed by the FBI into spying on a labour union organizer. In White Butterfly Black Betty (1994) and A Little Yellow Dog (1996). For the publication of Gone Fishin' (1997), a prequel to Devil in a Blue Dress , Mosley chose a small independent black publisher, Black Classic Press, over his longtime publisher W.W. Norton. The series continued with Bad Boy Brawly Brown (2002) and Little Scarlet Mosley's straightforward literary works include RL's Dream (1995), the story of a dying former blues guitarist (based on Robert Johnson) who is befriended by a young woman, and

The Writing of Fearless Jones
By Walter Mosley
When I began writing the novel Fearless Jones , it was simply to get involved once again with the characters Paris Minton and Fearless Jones. I've always been interested in those two amateur sleuths because of what their characters reveal about intelligence. Paris is a voracious reader and a logical thinker. There aren't many chess players that can best Paris. In school he would be a top ranked student but on the street he has serious limitations. That's because Paris is a normal every day kind of Joe. He's afraid of violence and trouble. He yearns to live the safe and conservative life of a bookworm. Paris is an unusual narrator for the genre because of his cautious attitudes toward violence, crime and the law. His fears and observations, I believe, are closer to those of the average reader than the more prevalent hard-boiled narrators of the field.

Genre: Fiction and Literature
Mosley is best known for his Easy Rawlins detective novels, but he has also written a number of other good books. Here he explores the relationship between Tommy and Eric. These two boys, whose backgrounds are radically different, end up being raised together from babyhood until first grade. Then their families are split apart totally. Tommy, an unhealthy and motherless African-American boy, never attends school and supports himself by selling drugs, yet he is still happy. Eric, tall and athletic, attends prestigious private schools and wins at everything but isn't satisfied with himself or his life. Their separate stories are told in alternating chapters, so that we see them each grow up. In the end, their stories come together again in a series of spooky coincidences. I really enjoy Mosley's blend of realism and mystery. This story is straightforward, but he weaves in his reflections on race and class in America today. This is not just a story about growing up, but rather a look at American society from the perspective of two growing up within it.
