First of all, there are more than 900 people here and there are more than 125 authors in this room right now without whom there would be no National Book Awards. So I would like all of the authors to stand and be applauded. And don't be shy, every single one.
My second welcome is to all of our visitors from Bangor - I hope I got that right. Not "Banger," as I was told is incorrect. And we have many new guests here who have never been to a National Book Awards before and I wanted to say, especially to you, that I hope you will return many times in the future, take as many tables as you would like.

Send this interview to a friend Read previous BookPage interviews New crime fiction with a twist from noir master Walter Mosley INTERVIEW BY ALDEN MUDGE For the past several years, writer Walter Mosley has been exploring and experimenting. Widely known and widely praised for his best-selling Easy Rawlins series of crime novels, Mosley restlessly delved into speculative fiction with Blue Light (1998), wrote two books featuring his urban philosopher, Socrates Fortlow, Always Outnumbered, Always Outgunned (1998) and Walkin' the Dog (1999), and produced an edgy nonfiction critique of American capitalism called Workin' on the Chain Gang: Shaking Off the Dead Hand of History "In a funny kind of negative way, I'm representative of a new breed of crime writers and fiction writers because I write so many different kinds of books," Mosley says during a call to his home in New York, where he has lived for nearly 20 years after growing up in Los Angeles. During our conversation, I've been pressing Mosley on whether or not, as an African-American, he feels he's expanded the boundaries for black writers. He has been thoughtful and polite, but he obviously does not want to make large statements about his contribution. More to the point, he doesn't want to be neatly and narrowly categorized. So Mosley talks about the impact of Chester Himes and Donald Goins and notes that there are about 40 black mystery writers publishing in America today. "I kind of took on the job of doing the type of hardboiled fiction that originated with Dashiell Hammett, Raymond Chandler and Ross MacDonald," he finally allows. "I may have been, if not the first one, maybe the most defined person to do that."

Mosley had been a secret pleasure, known only to avid readers. But since then, his books have been translated into 21 languages. Here are some online-only excerpts of Mosley's interview with NPR Correspondent Deborah Amos. He talks about the craft of writing and the pull of history. MOSLEY ON THE WRITING LIFE Walter Mosley worked as a computer programmer for many years before he published his first novel. "I took up writing to escape the drudgery of that every day cubicle kind of war. It wasn't... I did the work. I enjoyed the work. But it didn't satisfy part of me. So I started writing, thinking that I would write and I would work, you know, at programming for the rest of my life. And that would be fine. And I was surprised that I started getting books published and I could move out of that one career into the other." MOSLEY ON HIS WRITING PROCESS "The truth is, I never conceptualize a book before I start writing it. I always start with a first sentence like, "I was surprised to see a white man walk into Joppy's Bar," which is the beginning of DEVIL AND A BLUE DRESS.

(Reviewed by Hagen Baye APR 21, 2007) "All three of us were living according to black peoples’ laws. The minute I came upon that white boy’s body I knew that I would be seen as guilty in the eyes of American justice. Not even that – I was guilty. There was no jury that would exonerate me. There was no court of appeals that would hear my cries of innocence."

Walter Mosley talks technology, race and his return trip into Futureland
By Hugo Perez alter Mosley was not met with open arms by publishers when he sent his first novel out in 1989. As he tells it, their response was, "Well, you have to understand. White people don't read about black people. Black women don't like black men. And black men don't read." Mosley thankfully did not listen to them, and Devil in a Blue Dress was published in 1990 to widespread mainstream acclaim and success. It launched the best-selling Easy Rawlins mystery series, proved that black men, when given something that speaks to them, do in fact read, and made the editors that passed on Mosley's work eat crow. Through the Rawlins mysteries, Mosley fulfilled his desire to use popular fiction to create a sense of history for blacks, "One of the things is, historically, we [blacks] haven't written a great deal of popular fiction about our lives, and about our movements, and it's something that needs to be done."

Devil In A Blue Dress Mosley, a native of Los Angeles who now writes about the city from his home in New York City, has turned a remarkable feat over the course of his nine Easy Rawlins books. In living the life of his narrator, Mosley gave L.A. a history. The city with no connections, with no story, a place that so often is more flash than substance, is given body and soul through its material witness to the crimes and misdemeanors that reflect its own dark nature. Devil in A Blue Dress made Mosley, nominated for an Edgar and cited by no less than Bill Clinton as a favorite novel. His second, A Red Death , finds Easy infiltrating a black church in 1953 to spy on an alleged communist organizer.

    - 12:31pm Sep 19, 1998 PST(# of 9) I love Mosely's Easy Rawlins books. Devil in a Blue Dress was the first Rawlins mystery I read. Mosely described Easy's home and community so well that I could really see it in my mind. When I saw the movie with Denzel Washington, I felt they did a great job with the location and choice of actor. Unfortunately the story line isn't exactly like the book. I did not like Gone Fishing. It explained how Easy and Mouse got together but the story was kinda strange. I hope Mosely continues writing about Easy Rawlins. P Marlowe - 01:43pm Nov 14, 1998 PST(#
