Walter Mosley, Uneasy Street
On August 11, 1965, a routine traffic stop in a residential section of South Central Los Angeles known as Watts sparked the largest riots in American history. Over the next six days, thirty-four people were killed, more than a thousand were injured, and over two hundred million dollars worth of property had been stolen, destroyed, or burned to the ground. Why did this happen? What fueled the volcanic rage that was unleashed in Watts just one year after the landmark 1964 Civil Rights Act? And what were the lasting effects of the Watts riots on rapidly evolving race relations in America? These questions lie at the heart of Walter Mosley's exceptional new novel starring amateur sleuth Easy Rawlins.

Fortunate Son
From Jonathan Lasser
by Walter Mosley
Guide Rating - Read in the light of his detective novels featuring Ezekiel Rawlins and Fearless Jones, Walter Mosley's Fortunate Son might seem uncharacteristic, even weird. Devil in a Blue Dress and its companions carry the reader through hard-boiled detective fiction across a sea of period detail. In the context of his science fiction books, Blue Light and Futureland , Mosley's new novel may cause less confusion, though perhaps not less disappointment.
Fortunate Son supplies far less atmosphere and characterization than his detective stories; like his other speculative works, Mosley relies upon ideas, archetypes, and a vaguely religious portentousness to move the story forward. Unlike those other books, however, this latest novel seems joyless, owing not just to its contemporary setting, but to a larger disconnect between the author's motive and his means.
Mosley writes the story in a flat, uninflected tone, clear from the book's opening passage:

Biography of Walter Mosley (1952-)
Walter Mosley Walter Mosley was born on January 12, 1952 in Los Angeles, California, where his Easy Rawlins novels are set. He grew up in the Watts and Pico-Fairfield districts of the city, the only child of a mixed-race marriage. Mosley's father was an African-American man from the Deep South, and his mother a Jew whose parents immigrated to the United States from Eastern Europe. Mosley's unique racial and ethnic heritage provided him with a multifaceted understanding of prejudice as well as the importance of cultural tradition. Both of these topics find outlets in Mosley's writings in various genres, most famously his Easy Rawlins mystery novels, beginning with Devil in a Blue Dress Mosley earned his bachelor's degree from Johnson State College in Vermont in 1977, after which he tried various jobs, including computer programming. In 1982 he moved to New York City with his future wife, Joy Kellman, a white Jewish woman. They were married five years later, in 1987. During this time, Mosley rekindled his love of reading and writing, which came to a height when he read The Color Purple Alice Walker's iconic novel about the African-American experience. He stopped working in order to attend the City College of New York and focus on literature. Mosley recounts that one day he was inspired to write a sentence about black people sitting on a porch in Louisiana. Writing this sentence so roused him that he decided to devote his life to being an author.

White Butterfly, by Walter Mosley
Walter Mosley is Raymond Chandler's 'darker cousin.' Both writers set their detective stories in the mean streets of Los Angelos . Both created a classic hard-boiled detective character, Phillip Marlow and Easy Rawlins . Their detectives could be brothers, maybe they really are, secretly. That would not come as much of a surprise really. Maybe they are father and son. They have basically the same outlook on their work, their city and their women. They occupy bascially the same place in their respective social worlds. Easy has survived enough books to end up a family man, but he is the sort of family man I expect Phillip Marlow would have become had he ever been able to meet a woman who could live with him.
In White Butterfly by Walter Mosley , we find Easy Rawlins happily married and raising two children, trying to live out a middle class dream in a nice house in a decent neighborhood in post war Watts. Soon he is involved with the police who need his help to catch a suspected serial killer. The killer, who preys on women, has just moved from black

The author Walter Mosley was born in 1952 Los Angeles, California. He attended Goddard College and Johnson State College, and has been a computer programmer. He is currently a professor of English at New York University. Walter Mosley's mystery novels have often been compared to those of Raymond Chandler, mainly because they share vivid settings on the seamy side of Los Angeles in the middle decades of the century, a less-than-rosy view of human nature, and tough but noble main characters in Philip Marlowe and Ezekiel Rawlins There's another similarity: like Chandler, Mosley wields elegant, economical prose to create unforgettable characters. Chief among them is series protagonist Easy Rawlins. In many ways Rawlins is a kind of black Everyman, reflecting the great migration from the South in mid-century. He grew up in Houston, fought in World War II and works hard for a better life in Los Angeles, keenly aware of the boundaries imposed upon him by racism. But Easy is no stereotype; endlessly complex, he continues to surprise and reward readers. Chandler once wrote that the best mysteries are those you would read even if the last chapter were torn out; Easy Rawlins is a character who would make you do just that. Rawlins is not a private eye; he makes his living at everything from real estate to janitorial work. He's a sometime fixer, drawn into mysteries, often against his will, because some friend or connection needs his help. Like many other Black detective/mystery authors (witness

(Photo: Ann Weathersby) R eclining in a comfortable armchair in the Patron’s Lounge of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Walter Mosley is in a mellow mood. “I have the career that I’ve always wanted,” he says softly. “I’m a writer. How wonderful.” His signature fedora—today’s has a crisp silk band—hangs at an appropriately rakish angle on the chair’s arm. A huge antique African gold ring is wrapped around one finger. “Of my next five books, four of them are written,” Mosley says casually, smiling. And if you’ve ever left a novel unfinished—four of five?!—you’ll try to hate him now. At 53, when other best-selling authors might be content to coast on expectations, Mosley is merrily taking risks. Of those next five books, only one is in the mystery genre that’s made him one of the world’s most-read authors (and, famously, Bill Clinton’s favorite writer). The others include a political parable, a science-fiction fantasy, a brash nonfiction book about politics, and “a sex novel, a pornographic novel,” as Mosley calls it, that begins as a New Yorker finds his girlfriend in bed with another man—and doesn’t tell her.
