    Rumpole Misbehaves by John Mortimer
Rumpole is back with more cases at the Old Bailey. This time he is himself a defendant as his own chambers tries to have him served with an ASBO (Anti-Social Behavior Order) because he is eating, drinking, and smoking in his office. At the same time he is trying to gain a QC (Queen's Council) appointment so he can "wear silk."
From Rumpole Misbehaves by John Mortimer, American readers can learn a lot about British law while laughing at silly characters like Samuel "Soapy" Ballard and Claude Erskine-Brown. Mortimer really is a lawyer, and in this new book he criticizes the ASBO for its excessive regulating of behavior. He is not alone, as the Guardian also reports on its misuse
Of course, learning about British law is not the real reason to read Rumpole books, which have been coming out since the 1970s. Having read bunches of them, I simple enjoy the continuing story of the aging junior member suffering through the schemes of his wife Hilda (She Who Must Be Obeyed), defending the Timson family in court, and solving a murder case.
Libraries should add this new title to their collection of Rumpole books and DVDs.

      Leave working tipplers alone
By John Mortimer October 20, 2007 06:00am Article from: Font size: Send this article: Print Email THE true sickness of our times is not that we eat too much, smoke cigarettes or knock off a bottle of wine in an evening. It is the ever-growing tendency of medical boards, government officials, politicians and other groups who seem to have nothing better to do than tell us how to lead our lives.
It is as if we are a nation of miscreant mortals who have to be constantly lectured on how to behave.
We have now been told by the Liverpool's Centre for Public Health that the middle classes consume too much wine in their homes.
At dining tables in leafy towns and affluent suburbs, too many hard-working professionals are enjoying "hazardous" if not "harmful" amounts of alcohol night after night.
British Public Health Minister Dawn Primarolo seized on these findings as another chance to boss us all about.

    Review: Mortimer's Miscellany
York Theatre Royal, Friday 23rd June 2006 Robin Lewis enjoys an evening of 'original and beautifully crafted' stories and jokes told by the author of Rumpole of the Bailey, Sir John Mortimer. Sir John Mortimer Many people will recognise Sir John Mortimer as the creator of Rumpole of the Bailey. As well as being the author of Rumpole (a collection which includes three omnibus editions), Mortimer has written many other books and done many other things. He has published stories from his childhood in A Voyage Around My Father, and is also a distinguished playwright and the author of numerous film scripts. Mortimer wrote Cider with Rosie and Zeffirelli's Tea With Mussollini, which starred Dame Judi Dench and Maggie Smith. "As a barrister, Mortimer speaks from the stage with the ease of a man who is used to being in front of people who are uncertain what to think"

"Rumpole and The Reign of Terror"
(Reviewed by Eleanor Bukowsky APR 19, 2007) John Mortimer's Rumpole and the Reign of Terror brings back the champion of the underdog, Horace Rumpole, who is the oldest inhabitant of the chambers at 4 Equity Court. With his trademark frayed gown and yellowing wig, Rumpole appears innocuous enough. However, when he stands up in court, he has an arsenal of formidable weapons at his disposal: a stentorian voice, biting wit laced with sarcasm, and devastatingly effective powers of cross-examination. He frequently angers intrusive and overbearing judges, and he specializes in persuading lying witnesses to blurt out the truth.
