Biography:

John Hamilton Mortimer studied under Hudson, where he befriended fellow student, Joseph Wright. The two became close friends and also shared similar subject matter and style. Mortimer painted portraits, Romantic subject paintings, and conversation pieces. In the 1770’s, he began painting scenes of soldiers much like those of Salvator Rosa. Very few of Mortimer’s paintings have survived but his work can be seen through their engravings. His previously haphazard mode of living was changed after he married in 1775. However, his life ended early four years later at the age of thirty-nine.

  • Beliefs about how you live your life, matters of private decision, views best kept for private enjoyment, prejudice or entertainment, can't be imposed by the operation of criminal law. Attempts to enforce such views can only make the government the subject of ridicule. A barrister's job is to put the case for the defense as effectively and clearly as would his client if he had an advocate's skills. The barrister's belief or disbelief in the truth of the story is irrelevant: it's for the jury to decide this often difficult question. And in spite of David and Jonathan, Hamlet and Horatio, Caesar and Antony, Bush and Blair, women have a greater gift, I think, for friendship. The three towering geniuses of European culture, Shakespeare, Mozart and Leonardo da Vinci were not allowed to appear on the euro note as they might, in their separate ways, cause offense: Mozart because he was a "womanizer," Shakespeare because he wrote The Merchant of Venice

John Mortimer
Perhaps the most famous television dramatist to have defended a murderer at the Old Bailey, John Mortimer's career as a barrister held him in good stead, not only in supporting his early writings, but also in terms of inspiration. The radio play The Dock Brief was first broadcast in May 1957 and televised with the same cast and producer (Nesta Pain) four months later. Unsuccessful aging barrister Morganhall (Michael Hordern) is asked to represent wife murderer Fowle (David Kossoff), and hopes that a "not guilty" verdict with bring him the fame that has always eluded him. He constructs a masterly defence and subjects Fowle to an energetic dry run in his cell, but when they reach the courtroom his actual performance is so abysmal that the Home Secretary grants Fowle a reprieve. According to The Times , the performance, "touched that rare dramatic level at which comedy and tragedy are indistinguishable." Mortimer later wrote two Wednesday Play 's

"Champagne for everyone!"
By SCOTT ROSENBERG Harry Aung H orace Rumpole: the very name of John Mortimer's popular creation conjures wrinkled clothing and the hearty consumption of alcohol. A wigged barrister with a passion for cheap wine ("Chateau Thames Embankment") and a dedication to the criminal defense, Rumpole has achieved the greatest popularity in his television incarnation, solving droll mysteries with barely a twitch of his stiff upper lip. But his purest embodiment is in the collections of tales Mortimer has been regularly producing for many years. The tenth and newest is "Rumpole and the Angel of Death." Mortimer, a barrister himself for most of his life, has written television plays (like "Brideshead Revisited"), novels (like "Paradise Postponed") and screenplays. In the drama "A Voyage Round My Father" and again in "Clinging to the Wreckage," a sharply entertaining autobiography, he painted complex portraits of his stern barrister father. The fictional Rumpole, it's clear, draws on real-life traits of both father and son. Now in his 70s, Mortimer could no doubt retire with honor from writing as he has from legal practice. But he remains a dedicated early-morning writer, applying pen to paper from 5 a.m. most days, even when he is on a speaking tour as when we talked to him recently in San Francisco. By midday, though, the diligence typically gives way to drinking, Mortimer volunteers with a smile.

POLITICAL HUMOR NOTABLES BLOG LATEST HUMOR LEGAL HUMOR Now in his seventies, John Mortimer walks with difficulty and can see out of only one eye. Moreover, his last-leg-of-book-tour exhaustion was obvious when we met this spring for his final interview on the final day of his U.S. tour to promote Rumpole and the Angel of Death (Viking Penguin, 1996). Even so, his zest and sharp, often outrageous wit remained apparent throughout our conversation. Mortimer, a retired British barrister and Oxfordshire, England resident, is well known on both sides of the Atlantic for his Rumpole of the Bailey stories and television series. He is the author of ten short story collections featuring the comic and courageous criminal defense barrister, Horace Rumpole, whose motto is "Never Plead Guilty." Mortimer has also written two memoirs, novels (Summer's Lease, Paradise Postponed, Titmuss Regained, and Dunster), and numerous plays, film scripts, and television plays, including an adaptation of Evelyn Waugh's Brideshead Revisited. Our meeting took place mid-afternoon in New York City's Mysterious Bookshop, in owner Otto Penzler's stylish, second floor office. The spacious, high-ceilinged room has floor-to-ceiling built-in bookcases filled with Penzler's private book collection. Floors and tables were also crammed with books that day; hundreds of new mysteries waiting to be sorted, displayed and sold. In this literary surrounding, Mortimer expounded on everything from judges and feminism to prisons and family values.

Help Search Mortimer, Sir John (1923-) Writer For six decades John Mortimer has been one of Britain's most prolific and varied writers, producing dozens of novels, short stories, stage plays and scripts for television, radio and the cinema, all characterised by clever plots, witty dialogue and a dash of melancholy. For almost forty years he was also a highly successful barrister and one of the country's best-known advocates for civil liberties and free speech. John Clifford Mortimer was born on 21 April 1923, and after three years at Harrow went to study law at Oxford. His first professional encounter with the cinema came during the war, when he wrote documentaries for the Crown Film Unit . His experiences there later formed the basis for his first novel, the 1947 thriller Charade . After the war Mortimer began his career as a barrister, which he would frequently refer to as his 'day job', continuing to write in his spare hours. Several books followed, but Mortimer only really came into his own with his 1957 radio play, The Dock Brief , a legal satire about an unsuccessful barrister who elicits the sympathy of his wife-murdering client. Initiating a pattern that would continue for the rest of his career, Mortimer later refashioned this work for a number of media, turning it first into a stage play then adapting it again for television (both times with
