Since winning the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1993, Toni Morrison has become an industry. As much a household name as some of the writers in the Black Arts movement of the 1960s, Morrison is author, critic, lecturer, teacher, and public servant. Since she made her debut on the literary scene with the publication of The Bluest Eye in 1970, she has been a model worthy of emulation and a paragon of success. Her seven novels to date make her one of the most prolific African American women novelists, and her international reputation makes her one of the best-known American writers. Critically acclaimed for her deft use of language and lyrical writing, Morrison also counts among her honors the National Book Critics’ Circle Award as well as the Pulitzer Prize.
Now known as Toni Morrison, Chloe Anthony Wofford was born in Lorain, Ohio, on February 18, 1931, to Rahmah Willis Wofford and George Wofford, both migrants from the South. Her storytelling home environment enabled Morrison to enter first grade as the only child in her class who already knew how to read, a skill that she would cultivate as an adolescent by reading Russian novels

Toni Morrison: An Introduction Born on February 18, 1931 in Lorain, Ohio, Toni Morrison does not retain any sound of her childhood name, Chloe Wofford which she had changed to Toni, on the suggestion of her friends at Howard University. It could be treated as the precursor of her confrontation with the Other resulting in her new identity, her earlier one repressed though, nevertheless impinging on her subjectivity suspended somewhere between the two nodal points of symbiotic relationship. She joined Howard University players in an effort to inscribe her newly acquired name on the sports firmament. In 1953, Toni received a B. A. As a teacher in Howard University, Toni was in for another confrontation detrimental to her earlier identity. Here she met a Jamaican architect, Harold Morrison who left an indelible imprint on her persona. Their relationship could not last for more than six years, but it wrought a momentous change in her life. Despite the presence of two sons, the strong absence of Harold Morrison vitiated her sanguinity. Her imaginative powers, however, metamorphosed her personal loss into the impersonal which she tries to recapitulate through her heterogeneous narratives. The marriage broke when the family had returned from a visit to Europe in 1964. The Wretched of the Earth made ripples in Europe.

Revolutionary Suicide in Toni Morrison's Fiction - Critical Essay
African American Review Fall, 2000 by Katy Ryan "[On the slaveships, some Igbos] wished to die on the idea that they should then get back to their own country. The captain in order to obviate this idea, thought of an expedient viz. to cut off the heads of those who died intimating to them that if determined to go, they must return without heads. The slaves were accordingly brought up to witness the operation. One of them by violent exertion got loose and flying to the place where the nettings had been unloosed in order to empty the tubs, he darted overboard. The ship brought to, a man was placed in the main chains to catch him which he perceiving, made signs which words cannot express expressive of his happiness in escaping. He then went down and was seen no more." (qtd. in Cowley and Mannix 108)

    Toni Morrison: An Introduction
By JONATHAN YARDLEY Monday, March 6, 2006; Page C01 An occasional series in which The Post's book critic reconsiders notable and/or neglected books from the past. Thirty-three years ago, Toni Morrison labored in relative obscurity: She was the author of one novel, "The Bluest Eye" (1970), an editor at Random House, an associate professor of English at the State University of New York in Purchase. She was in her early forties, the divorced mother of two boys, slowly gaining respect in the scholarly and literary worlds but almost entirely unknown to the general public. Humor, character and dialogue drive "Sula," published when author Toni Morrison was a divorced mother of two in her early forties. (By Guillermo Arias Associated Press)

Pam Houston talks with Toni Morrison
    Appears in Other Voices
Editors' note: Pam Houston originally conducted her interview with Toni Morrison on assignment from O Magazine, in which a short excerpt of their discussion first appeared. Other Voices wishes to thank everyone at O for making this interview happen. We feel lucky if, during the course of our lives, we have a chance to sit and talk with one of our heroes. But when our hero not only lives up to, but overreaches our expectations, we feel something closer to chosen, even blessed. Such were my feelings a little over a year ago on a humid summer morning at Toni Morrison’s apartment in lower Manhattan, where we began an extraordinary conversation that would—to my surprise and delight—last all day. Ms. Morrison is a person who gives you her full attention, who wants, even in the context of an interview, to have a conversation, who is entirely self-possessed without being the least bit self-obsessed, who is at every minute teaching and at every minute eager to learn. The occasion was the publication of her eighth novel which, like many of her other novels bears a one word title, Love.

    Why blacks love Bill Clinton
DeWayne Wickham talks about African-Americans' overwhelming support for the 42nd president, and why they like him more than Colin Powell and Jesse Jackson. By Suzy Hansen Pages 1 I remember reading Morrison's essay and choking. Morrison's estimation of Clinton's blackness seemed shallow, offensive and beside the point. At the time, I wasn't the only one unnerved, and I'm sure many people still have problems with calling Clinton "the first black president," no matter how Morrison intended it. Yet, in retrospect, I realize that my sharp reaction had something to do with age: I was pretty young when Reagan and Bush were in office. Like most white people, I didn't understand how Clinton related to the African-American community; I also had a limited memory of how other presidents treated blacks. DeWayne Wickham's "Bill Clinton and Black America," mostly a collection of interviews he conducted with such African-Americans as NAACP president Kweisi Mfume, actor Tim Reid and columnist Betty Baye, fills in both gaps. The book specifically illuminates how blacks responded to Clinton and just how different his presidency was from every other one in American history. The latter might be Wickham's more important point. Clinton, despite some notable blunders (especially welfare reform), impressed blacks with his policies particularly his many appointments of African-Americans. More famously, Clinton radiated a certain style. As Bill Campbell, former mayor of Atlanta, notes, "We know when white folks are comfortable around us and when they're not." And while some of that convincing style had to do with Clinton's genuine interest in black culture, much of it had to do with as Morrison and many others have pointed out his poor, Southern roots.

TONI MORRISON QUOTES All paradises, all utopias are designed by who is not there, by the people who are not allowed in. TONI MORRISON, Online NewsHour interview, Mar. 9, 1998 TONI MORRISON, Tar Baby Do they still call it infatuation? That magic ax that chops away the world in one blow, leaving only the couple standing there trembling? Whatever they call it, it leaps over anything, takes the biggest chair, the largest slice, rules the ground wherever it walks, from a mansion to a swamp, and its selfishness is its beauty.... People with no imagination feed it with sex the clown of love. They don't know the real kinds, the better kinds, where losses are cut and everybody benefits. It takes a certain intelligence to love like that softly, without props. TONI MORRISON, Love Love is divine only and difficult always. If you think it is easy you are a fool. If you think it is natural you are blind. It is a learned application without reason or motive except that it is God. TONI MORRISON

Index African-American novelist Toni Morrison was born in Ohio to a spiritually oriented family. She attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., and has worked as a senior editor in a major Washington publishing house and as a distinguished professor at various universities. Morrison's richly woven fiction has gained her international acclaim. In compelling, large-spirited novels, she treats the complex identities of black people in a universal manner. In her early work The Bluest Eye (1970), a strong-willed young black girl tells the story of Pecola Breedlove, who survives an abusive father. Pecola believes that her dark eyes have magically become blue, and that they will make her lovable. Morrison has said that she was creating her own sense of identity as a writer through this novel: "I was Pecola, Claudia, everybody." Sula (1973) describes the strong friendship of two women. Morrison paints African-American women as unique, fully individual characters rather than as stereotypes. Morrison's

    Beloved (1987)
124 was spiteful. Full of a baby's venom. My first-born. All I can remember of her is how she loved the burned bottom of bread. Can you beat that? Eight children and that's all I remember. For a used-to-be-slave woman to love anything that much was dangerous, especially if it was her children she had settled on to love. The best thing ... was to love just a little bit; everything, just a little bit, so when they broke its back, or shoved it in a croaker sack, well, maybe you'd have a little love left over for the next one. Nobody stopped playing checkers just because the pieces included her children. If a Negro got legs he ought to use them. Sit down too long, somebody will figure out a way to tie them up. A man ain't nothing but a man. But a son? Well, now, that's somebody Anything dead coming back to life hurts. Would it be all right? Would it be all right to go ahead and feel? Go ahead and count on something? Why was there nothing it refused? No misery, no regret, no hateful picture too rotten to accept? Like a greedy child it snatched up everything. Just once, could it say, No thank you? I just ate and can't hold another bite?... But my greedy brain says, Oh thanks, I'd love more ... my brain would go right ahead and take it and never say, No thank you. I don't want to know or have to remember that. I have other things to do: worry, for example, about tomorrow, about Denver, about Beloved, about age and sickness not to speak of love. But her brain was not interested in the future. Loaded with the past and hungry for more, it left her no room to imagine, let alone plan for, the next day.
