My intention was just to put my thoughts and feelings about her novels into words (and to get a decent grade in my independent study class). This page includes opinions, questions, plus a hypertext journey through various motifs and themes I recorded in each story. I had planned on taking these pages down in the summer of '95, after I received my grade for this project. I decided to leave them up after I received several email messages with positive comments, so thank you to those of you who take the time to let me know you found these pages helpful. *SPOILER ALERT* If you haven't finished one of the books and you decide to check the above links out anyway you will discover that some characters die and other things happen that you might not have expected. Please keep this in mind if that matters to you. If it does matter please remember to come back after you've finished the book. :) Before you write *PLEASE* scan my list of [Frequently Asked Questions] . So far there are only six questions but people really do ask them a lot. Please read the questions to see if you were going to ask something similar.

R E V I E W S Now and then By Joseph Heller A rambling, frequently amusing memoir about a childhood spent on Coney Island, from the author of "Catch-22." t o n i M o r r i s o n T H E S A L O N I N T E R V I E W THE NOBEL PRIZE-WINNING AUTHOR TALKS ABOUT HER NEW BOOK, "PARADISE," WHAT SHE LEARNED FROM HER MARRIAGE AND WHY O.J. SIMPSON IS INNOCENT. BY ZIA JAFFREY I met Toni Morrison at her apartment in SoHo. She hung up my coat and offered me a drink, and we settled in for a conversation. I was immediately aware of the gentleness in that room her listening presence. Morrison's seventh novel, "Paradise," had just been published by Knopf, and throughout our talk her phone rang continually with news from her son, her sister, a friend of the reviews the book was getting. An unhurried and thoughtful speaker, she took it all in stride. "Paradise" which opens with the startling sentence "They shoot the white girl first" involves the murder of several women in the 1970s by a group of black men, intent on preserving the honor of their small Oklahoma town; they see the women as bad, a wayward influence on their moral lives. It's an intense, deeply felt book that easily ranks with her best work. Toni Morrison was born in Loraine, Ohio, in 1931. She attended Howard University, then received a master's degree in English at Cornell University, where she wrote a thesis on William Faulkner. Her first novel, "The Bluest Eye," was published in 1969, followed by "Sula" in 1973. Then came "Song of Solomon" (1977), which won the National Book Critics Circle Award for fiction, "Tar Baby" (1981), the play "Dreaming Emmett" (1985) and "Beloved" (1987), which received the Pulitzer in 1988. Her novel "Jazz" appeared in 1992, and in 1993 Morrison was awarded the Nobel Prize for literature. Last year she was the co-editor, along with Claudia Brodsky Lacour, of a volume called "Birth of a Nation'hood: Gaze, Script and Spectacle in the O.J. Simpson case." An editor at Random House for many years, Morrison now teaches fiction writing at Princeton University.

Thanks to the papers, we know what the columnists think. Thanks to round-the-clock cable, we know what the ex-prosecutors, the right-wing blondes, the teletropic law professors, and the disgraced political consultants think. Thanks to the polls, we know what "the American people" think. But what about the experts on human folly?
I hoped to avoid the spectacle I was sure would be mounted, fearing that at any minute I might have to witness ex-Presidential friends selling that friendship for the higher salaries of broadcast journalism; anticipating the nausea that might rise when quaking Democrats took firm positions on or over the fence in case the polls changed. I imagined feral Republicans, smelling blood and a shot at the totalitarian power they believe is rightfully theirs; self-congratulatory pundits sifting through "history" for nuggets of dubious relevancy.
I did not relinquish my summer plans, but summer is over now and I have begun to supplement verbal accounts of the running news with tentative perusal of C-SPAN, brief glimpses of anchorfolk, squinting glances at newspapertrying belatedly to get the story straight. What, I have been wondering, is the storythe one only the public seems to know? And what does it mean?
I wish that the effluvia did add up to a story of adultery. Serious as adultery is, it is not a national catastrophe. Women leaving hotels following trysts with their extramarital lovers tell pollsters they abominate Mr. Clinton's behavior. Relaxed men fresh from massage parlors frown earnestly into the camera at the mere thought of such malfeasance. No one "approves" of adultery, but, unlike fidelity in Plymouth Rock society, late-twentieth-century fidelity, when weighed against the constitutional right to privacy, comes up short. The root of the word

    Biography of Toni Morrison (1931-)
Toni Morrison Chloe Anthony Wofford, later known as Toni Morrison, was born in Lorain, Ohio, in 1931. She was the daughter of a shipyard welder and a religious woman who sang in the church choir. Her parents had moved to Ohio from the South, hoping to raise their children in an environment more friendly to blacks. Despite the move to the North, the Wofford household was steeped in the oral traditions of Southern African American communities. The songs and stories of Chloe Wofford's childhood undoubtedly influenced her later work; indeed, Toni Morrison's oeuvre draws heavily upon the oral art forms of African Americans. Although Toni Morrison's writing is not autobiographical, she fondly alludes to her past, stating, "I am from the Midwest so I have a special affection for it. My beginnings are always there.... No matter what I write, I begin there.... It's the matrix for me.... Ohio also offers an escape from stereotyped black settings. It is neither plantation nor ghetto." She was an extremely gifted student, learning to read at an early age and doing well at her studies at an integrated school. Her parents' desire to protect their child from the racist environment of the South succeeded in many respects: racial prejudice was less of a problem in Lorain, Ohio than it would have been in the South, and Chloe Wofford played with a racially diverse group of friends when she was young. Inevitably, however, she began to experience racial discrimination as she and her peers grew older. She graduated with honors in 1949 and went to Howard University in Washington D.C. At Howard, she majored in English and minored in classics, and was actively involved in theater arts through the Howard University Players. She graduated from Howard in 1953 with a B.A. in English and a new name: Toni Wofford (Toni being a shortened version of her middle name). She went on to receive her M.A. in English from Cornell in 1955.

    Classroom Issues and Strategies
For the last twenty years I have taught at a women's college where ninety-five percent of the population is what we call "the traditional age," seventeen through twenty-two years old. These students always express dismay at three violent episodes, all of them in this selection: Eva's maternal infanticide, Sula's digital immolation, and Chicken Little's accidental death. I have as yet found no way to soften, prior to their reading the text, students' outrage. However, their discomfort is allayed by our discussion of the text and of Morrison's exploration in this book and in Beloved of the figure of the mother who believes she "owns her offspring" (and, therefore, who reasons she has the right to exercise the ultimate decision over her children) and our conclusion that Morrison is not advocating abuse of authority.
Major Themes, Historical Perspectives, and Personal Issues
This selection from Morrison's Sula constitutes some of the most hotly contested passages in African-American women's fiction today. As you are undoubtedly aware, a number of criticsamong them Barbara Smith in "Toward a Black Feminist Critical Theory"suggest that, embedded within these chapters that celebrate "manlove" and heterosexuality, there is a lesbian "disloyal" subtext (see Teresa de Lauretis, "Sexual Indifference and Lesbian Representation," in

    "DARE TO THINK FOR YOURSELF"

A RESPONSE BY DENIS DUTTON THE REFLECTION OF VALUES
A RESPONSE BY THOMAS J. COTTLE It is the right question and I think appropriately the first one, glancing away, as it does, from an associated, perhaps even precursor one: whether universities should teach values. The "whether" ripples through late twentieth-century debates in several forms. Certain disciplines pride themselves on the value-free nature of their intellectual inquiries, and the pursuit of "objectivity" is at the heart of their claims, claims which are understood to place the stature of these disciplines far above interpretive ones. The genesis of higher education is unabashedly theological and conscientiously value-ridden and value-seeking. There is not much point in and certainly not much time for rehearsing the evolution of the university to its present state of arrest over questions of value and ethics. We can simply note that the academy has, for the most part, shed its theological coat, relegated those high purposes to departments, schools of religion, and seminaries, and wrapped itself instead in a moral cape made of panels of cloth woven in enlightened and pre-enlightenment theses: that knowledge is a good; that the rightly trained mind would turn toward virtue; that the commitment of higher education was to train leaders to envision, if not effect, a desirable future.

    Beloved by Toni Morrison
I read Toni Morrison's Beloved last week — another rather belated attempt to celebrate Banned Books Week by reading a challenged book. (This being an even more belated attempt to write about it!)
It seems to me that most banned or challenged books are also some of the best pieces of literature available for our young people. The writing is usually superb, and the issues are usually tough but worthy. After all, if they weren't very good, no one would read them and they wouldn't be a threat.
In other words, banning a book is usually (to me) one of the highest compliments you can pay the author.
However, I did not enjoy Beloved as much as I'd thought I would. This seems to be one of the rare cases where I did not find the story to be compelling, or the way the issues were addressed to be all that remarkable. Granted, the story told slavery the way it was, which is most likely the reason why it was banned — God forbid our teens learn that rich whites used to do bad things to slaves.
Don't get me wrong — I think it's great that Toni Morrison described the horrors of slavery (and the impact it had on blacks for years afterward), but I just didn't get into the story. However, the idea of a murdered daughter coming back "in the flesh" 18 years later is pretty unique, and I think there are probably plenty of people who would enjoy it much more than I did.
