William Morris Davis No Erosion of Impact Personal Life History - William Morris Davis was born in Philadelphia, Pa., on February 12, 1850. He died in Pasadena, CA., on February 5, 1934. He was the son of Edward M. Davis and Martha Mott Davis, who were both members of the Society of Friends. His father a Philadelphia businessman, was expelled from the society for enlisting in the Union army during the civil war. His mother was the daughter of Lucretia Mott an early and strenuous worker for women's rights and a firm antagonist of slavery. His mother resigned her post on the society shortly after the expulsion of her husband from the group. In 1879 Davis married Ellen B. Warner of Springfield Massachusetts. After her death he married Mary M. Wyman of Cambridge, Massachusetts in 1914. After her death he married Lucy L. Tennant of Milton, Massachusetts in 1928. She miraculously survived him. Academic History - Davis' contributions cover the separate field of geography, geology, and meteorology. He had an emphasis throughout his career on education in both the high school level as well as the college level. Davis' most influential concept was the "cycle of erosion". He worked on refining and detailing this concept for most of his professional career. Many of his early publications layed the foundation for this concept but it is the essay "the rivers of pennsylvania,1889" where he first states and defines the concept. It is clear that Davis was influenced by Darwin's organic evolution theory. In a 1883 writing he states "it seems most probable, that the many pre-existent streams in each river basin concentrated their water in a single channel of overflow, and that this one channel survives- a fine example of natural selection."

Life and Career Davis was born in Philadelphia in 1850. At the age of 19, he earned his bachelor's degree from Harvard University and one year later earned his masters degree in engineering. Davis then spent three years working at Argentina's meteorological observatory and subsequently returned to Harvard to study geology and physical geography. In 1878, Davis was appointed an instructor in physical geography at Harvard and by 1885 became a full professor. Davis continued to teach at Harvard until his retirement in 1912. Following his retirement, he occupied several visiting scholar positions at universities across the United States. Davis died in Pasadena, California in 1934.

We decorate our rooms with his wallpapers and fabrics and we have grown to agree with his political views on the equality of women, the preservation of our national heritage and, very specially, the guarding of our open spaces. He truly was a "green" man, way ahead of his time. Morris felt as deeply about the quality of design as he did about the quality of life and believed that the two were intrinsically entwined. In all of his work he constantly strove to use natural materials and to encourage people to make things for themselves; as an ardent socialist he wanted workers to experience a joy in labour and preached for free education and an eight hour day. He was horrified by the dehumanising industrialisation sweeping across the world. In 1861, with a group of talented friends (amongst them Edward Burne-Jones, Philip Webb and Dante Gabriel Rossetti) William Morris started a company dedicated to producing beautiful hand crafted furnishings and furniture. His first wallpapers date from this time, including Trellis and Fruit. He proceeded to acquire an amazing list of skills. His fabric printing required him to learn the art of carving for the wooden blocks, as well as natural dyeing, a technique which had disappeared and took him many years to rediscover and to perfect; Strawberry Thief is an excellent example of his achievement. We can see his exquisite drawing and water colour skills in the design for African Marigold, now at the William Morris Gallery.

'William Morris' William Morris (1834-1896) was born in Walthamstow, Essex, the son of a wealthy city stockbroker. He was educated at Marlborough public school, then went to Oxford, where he met Edward Burne-Jones (1833-1898) and Philip Webb (1831-1915), both of whom became lifelong friends. Both Morris and Burne-Jones intended entering the Church, but they gained inspiration from the writings of John Ruskin , and decided they wanted to become artists. Ruskin saw the work of Rossetti and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood as 'the dawn of a new era of art'. After leaving university, Morris spent the years between 1856 and 1861 pursuing various careers, including training under George Street as an architect. Through Burne-Jones, he also met Rossetti and other Pre-Raphaelite painters. Encouraged by Rossetti, Morris turned from architecture to painting, and was at the same time writing poetry. In 1859 he married Jane Burden, the archetypal Pre-Raphaelite beauty with brooding eyes, who appears in several of Rossetti's paintings. Early in their marriage they moved into 'Red House' in Bexleyheath, Kent, which had been designed for them by Philip Webb. They created murals, carvings, stained glass, metal work, embroidery and furniture. Their success was mainly due to Morris and Webb's associations with architects, church decoration being their most important activity.

William Morris William Morris was born in England in 1934. He was an artist who designed wallpaper, fabric, rugs, and many other types of things that decorate a home. All his designs have something in common. They all were inspired by the beautiful patterns and colors in nature. Let's take a look at some of his work. The artwork at the top of this page is a design for wallpaper. You can see that William Morris loved flowers. He often filled his pictures with flower stems and leaves that twist and twirl across the design. In this wallpaper design he added flower blossoms. Sometimes he added birds and fruit. He used his imagination when choosing colors. Notice that many of the leaves in these designs are colored blue. This second design is called "Strawberry Thief". Can you guess who the thief is? William Morris creates works of art in glass that have the optical equivalence of these. The exhibition includes twenty individual sculptures and two large installations created in the past two decades. Illustrating his uncanny ability to manipulate blown glass into something it really is not, Morris pushes the limit of glass blowing, the most fragile and seductive of mediums. His mesmerizing sculptures require extraordinary technical skills that seem beyond the physical and chemical possibilities of glass. These outwardly effortless accomplishments are the result of tremendous skill and a lifetime of experimentation, coupled with his true love of nature. Morris uses the delicate medium of glass to recreate life-size black ravens and handsome deer heads that reflect archaeology and the animal. "Morris's works are not flashy, as are many pieces created in glass, but more quietly beautiful, with their opaque, sensual surfaces. A luminous color seems to glow within each piece as if it were some sort of life force or blood coursing through," states Patricia Watkinson in her introduction to the exhibition catalogue. They shared a love of poetry, the middle ages and Gothic architecture. He was born in Walthamstow, then a village, and moved to a grand residence there called Water House at the age of 14 - this has since become the William Morris Gallery . He studied at Oxford with the intention of becoming a clergyman, but while there he met Edward Coley Burne-Jones , also studying for the church, and they both began to turn towards art. They were persuaded by Rossetti to give up the studies and become artists. Morris did a year in architectural practice of G. E. Street , and then turned to painting. However, he soon found that his metier was design. The cooperative attempt to decorate his new house (the Red House, built by Philip Webb ) at Bexleyheath, south east of London, lead to the setting up of the firm Morris, Marshall, Faulkner and Co. The partners were Morris, Burne-Jones, Rossetti Ford Madox Brown Philip Webb , Charles Faulkner, and Peter Paul Marshall, a surveyor. The firm was set up as a 'company of Fine Art Workmen', designing and producing (or at least supervising the production of) furniture, wallpaper, murals, tapestrywork, stained glass windows, metalwork, tapestries, and smaller works such as tiles and embroidery. It started in 8 Lion Square, London, where there was sufficient space for workshops, showrooms, and a kiln in the basement for tile production.
