William Morris , the son of a successful businessman, was born in Walthamstow, a quiet village east of London , on 24th March, 1834. After successfully investing in a copper mine, William's father was able to purchase Woodford Hall, a large estate on the edge of Epping Forest, in 1840.
Morris was educated at Marborough and Exeter College, Oxford . At university Morris met Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti. The three men were all artists and formed a group called the Brotherhood. During this period their work was inspired by the history, ritual and architecture of the Medieval period. Morris and Burne-Jones were committed Anglicans and for a time they talked of taking part in a "crusade and holy warfare" against the art and culture of their own time.
Members of the Brotherhood were influenced by the writings of the art critic, John Ruskin , who praised the art of medieval craftsmen, sculptors and carvers who he believed were free to express their creative individualism. Ruskin was also very critical of the artists of the 19th century, who he accused of being servants of the industrial age.
In 1857 Morris joined with Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti to paint frescoes for the Oxford Union. He also began writing poetry and in 1858 his book

Current projects include: the population dynamic consequences of constitutive and inducible resistance in plants, the maintenance of mutualistic interactions between flowering plants and nectar-robbing pollinators, the use of population-level attributes to detect biotic responses to ongoing environmental changes, and the use of mathematical models to assess viability of threatened and endangered populations. The common thread uniting these projects is that they combine field experiments and mathematical models to study population dynamics in natural and managed systems. William Morris Biography
William Morris was born in Carmel, California in 1957, and received his degrees from California State University at Chico and Central Washington University. He is considered to be one of the most gifted and innovative glass artists in America today. He lives in Seattle where he originally worked as Dale Chihuly's gaffer (master glassblower) in the early 1980's, and has since maintained his own studio. Morris' work has been strongly influenced by his interest in archeology and ancient pagan cultures, and addresses the timeless relationship between humans and their environment. His work evokes images from a time when man was more in tune with nature, and is subliminally suggestive of ritual significance. Various works such as the Stonehenge Series, Artifact Vessels, Suspended Artifacts, and Rhyton Vessels illustrate symbolical, mythological influences. He also acknowledges the influence of Italian artists who have shared their knowledge of techniques for crafting glass, so essential to the realization of Morris' ideas into form. Another unique aspect of William Morris' glass art is his treatment of surface texture, achieved by various techniques such as sprinkling powdered glass and minerals onto a blown surface, etching, and acid washing to achieve "ancient" and textural diversity.

THE DECORATION OF HOUSES For Morris, the idea of the beautiful house was at the center of both his art and philosophy. The passion he held for architecture and domestic spaces can be traced throughout his life, in his letters and writings and his work as a designer, as well as in his love for his own houses, Red House in Kent, the sixteenth-century Kelmscott Manor, and his London home, Kelmscott House. The wallpapers, textiles, carpets, tapestries, and furniture designed by the Firm were intended to create an integrated artistic interior and, in so doing, to transform domestic life into a deeply aesthetic experience. Morris wished "to revive a sense of beauty in home life, to restore the dignity of art to the ordinary household decoration." The intricate layering and intertwining of organic forms in Morris's patterns for wallpapers, such as

William Morris (b. London, England 1834; d. 1896) William Morris was born in Walthamstow, London in 1834. He was educated at Marlborough School and Exeter College, Oxford. He spent a year working for G. E. Street, where he initiated a lifelong friendship with Philip Webb, Street's chief assistant. A prime mover in the establishment of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings, Morris fought to save buildings from a prevalent, but destructive policy of "restoration". He was the founder and leader of the socialist league, as well as the founder of the Kelmscott Press which specialized in designing lettering and borders, and publishing English literature, both classic and contemporary. Morris considered art "the expression of man's joy in his labour". This principle inspired a generation of disciples. References

    William Morris tapestries
William Morris embraced an ideal that viewed modern art as mere mass production, with none of the uniqueness of earlier approaches, in particular Medieval art, which he believed retained more of the artist's original personality in the work. All Morris tapestries are a testament to craftsmanship, technique and discipline, as well as triumphing the artist above the process. It is for this reason that these wall tapestries are valued as highly as they are today. Each piece really is a one-off, and combines modern weaving technique with the striking dynamism of pre-Renaissance art. We have an impressive range of William Morris tapestries including work from Edward Burne-Jones, John Henry Dearle and other noted Pre-Raphaelite artists. These include a number of famous pieces, such as the Peacock tapestry, Flora, Woodpecker, the Holy Grail tapestry panels and the Tree of Life tapestry. Every William Morris tapestry below demonstrates the consummate skill in composition and the extent to which Pre-Raphaelite artists used color to achieve vibrant and dynamic art that remains unchallenged even today.

As such, he enjoyed a comfortable childhood before going to Marlborough and Exeter, Oxford. The initial plan was that he take holy orders, but after reading the scathing social commentaries and philosophies of Thomas Carlyle and John Ruskin, Morris abandoned his liturgical aspirations to devote his life to art. He worked briefly for G. E. Street, the Gothic Revival architect, after he left Oxford, but soon left, determined to pursue a more painterly life. With his sensitivity and artistic proclivities, it wasn't long before he forged friendships with the clique known as the Pre-Raphaelites. These artists, particularly Edward Burne-Jones and Dante Gabriel Rossetti, had a lifelong impact on Morris and his work. Rossetti's influence in particular is evident in Morris's only surviving painting 'La Belle Iseult'. By the 1860s, the mercurial and multi-talented Morris decided that his creative future lay in the field of the decorative arts. His career as a designer began when he decorated the Red House, Bexleyheath, which had been built for him by Phillip Webb.
