William Morris (1834-1896) English craftsman, poet, and early socialist, whose designs generated the Arts and Crafts Movement in the later half of the1900th century. Morris encouraged to return to handmade objects and rejected standard tastes. He was associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and a close friend of the painter-poet Dante Gabriel Rossetti and his sister Christina Rossetti , also a poet. "If you want a golden rule that will fit everybody, this is it: Have nothing in your houses that you do not know to be useful, or believe tom be beautiful." (from 'The Beauty of Life', 1880) William Morris was born in Walthamstow, Greater London, as the son of a successful business man. He attended Marlborough College in 1848-51 and in 1853 he entered Exeter College, Oxford, where he met Edward Burne-Jones and Charles Faulkner. Morris thought for a while of taking Holy Orders, but he renounced the Church, and after taking his B.A. in 1856 Morris began his studies in architecture. Morris's early poems were published in The Oxford and Cambridge Magazine - he also financed the publication. In 1858 Morris worked with Rossetti, Burne-Jones, and others on the frescoes in the Oxford Union. He published THE DEFENCE OF GUENEVERE AND OTHER POEMS (1858), which contains much of his best work, including 'The Haystack in the Floods', 'Concerning Geffray Teste Noire', 'Shameful Death', and 'Golden Wings'. They all have medieval settings - Morris was obsessed with medieval world. In the prose fantasy 'The Hollow Land' (1856) an unjust knight enters an eartly paradise. He departs it, becomes aged, and finally regains the land through devotion to pictorial art.

William Morris
William Morris was known to be energetic, versatile, and industrious for he accomplished many projects throughout his career. He was a popular and prolific Victorian poet and translator of Northern mythology. As an artist-craftsman he invented and revived lost techniques for printing, and for creating textiles, embroidery and stained glass. By opening his own textile factory, he became a successful entrepreneur in the decorating and manufacturing business. During the last two decades of his life he became an ardent Socialist, giving hundreds of lectures on the topic throughout Britain. Despite various ventures, Morris had a lasting enthusiasm for medievalism and Arthuriana.
Morris's interest in the Arthurian legends first became apparent while he was a student at Oxford, from 1853-1855. At this time Arthuriana had been popularized by Tennyson and Southey's edition of Malory's Morte d'Arthur . One of Morris's favorite poems to read aloud dramatically to Edward Burne-Jones was Tennyson's "The Lady of Shalott."

Morris was an English poet, artist, and socialist reformer, who rejected the opulence on the Victorian era and urged a return to medieval traditions of design, craftsmanship, and community. He was inspired by the writings of John Ruskin and Augustus Pugin who championed the return of gothic architecture (the last true architectural movement in their opinion.) Spurred by the experience of furnishing his home, Red House , Morris set up a studio in 1861 with several associates, including architect Philip Webb and English artists Dante Gabriel Rossetti and Edward Burne-Jones house as a total work of art, with all of the interior objects designed by the architect , emerged from this studio and remained standard practice throughout the Arts and Crafts movement. He established the Kelmscott Press in 1890 , and, using his own designs for the type and ornamental letters , he issued editions of the classics and of his own works, notably The Kelmscott Chaucer (1896). In his political writings, he

William Morris (1834-1896)
William Morris was one of the most influential voices in Victorian art and architecture, and his influence spread far into the 20th century in the form of the Arts and Crafts Movement that he helped spawn. Morris was born at Walthamstow, Essex, in 1834. and attended Marlborough School, and later, Exeter College at Oxford University. He had planned to enter the church, but reading the social commentaries of Ruskin and Caryle (among others) led him to the arts instead. While at Exeter he met the artist Edward Burne-Jones, who was to prove a life-long friend.

Although Morris's activities were wide-ranging and diverse, he attempted to achieve perfection in everything he produced, governed by a deeply held belief that a beautiful and well designed environment was fundamental to the improvement and fulfilment of society.
William Morris, one of the most prolific and influential British designers, produced decorative arts - tapestries, printed fabrics, stained glass, wallpapers and embroidery. He was also an accomplished poet, novelist and calligrapher. Added to this, Morris was a radical political figure and an early conservationist, instrumental in the formation of the Socialist League and the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings. Something of William Morris "We call it a society and go about professing openly the totallest separation, isolation. Our life is not a mutual helpfulness; but rather cloaked under due laws-of-war, named 'fair competition' and so forth, it is a mutual hostility. We have profoundly forgotten everywhere that Cash-payment is not the sole relation of human beings." Thomas Carlyle, 1843

William Morris patterns have been popular since the end of the 19th century and have never lost their appeal. With Dante Gabriel Rosetti, Arthur Hughes, and the other preRaphaelites, he changed the direction of English art, architecture, and design and began a return to values of craftsmanship and quality materials that continue to enjoy a renaissance in these areas.
