Hannah More felt guilty about her stage works. As a young politician Wilberforce dedicated his life to the "impossible" task of abolishing slavery in 18th-century Britain. After decades of struggle, his cause prevailed, showing that committed believers can make a difference in combating social ills.

The Reckoning: Remembering the Dutch Resistance
is an award-winning documentary that reveals the intensely human aspect of the Dutch struggle against Nazi tyranny.
annah More was a woman whose remembrance speaks less of her particular accomplishments than of her influence and associations. In this regard, she was like her friend Samuel Johnson. Other friends were William Wilberforce, the Macaulays, and John Newton. The famous actor Garrick patronized her plays which enjoyed successbut Hannah always felt nagging guilt for having written them. In her early years, Hannah was not adverse to the high life. She kept up a lively correspondence with prominent contemporaries and was part of every festivity. To the end of her days she was on easy terms with "infidels" such as Horace Walpole. But contact with John Newton and William Wilberforce channeled her mind and energies toward moral issues, and she became deeply religious.

English nonfiction writer, playwright, poet, essayist, and novelist. The following entry provides an overview of More's life and works. For additional information on her career, see NCLC, Volume 27.
    INTRODUCTION
A significant voice on behalf of many social causes, More was one of the most popular female writers of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. While she initially gained prominence through her plays and poetry, after 1779, More abandoned those genres and began producing anti-Enlightenment polemics and religious essays dedicated to the education and improvement of her contemporaries and the poor. She is best known for her brief expository prose or tracts directed at the working class, collected in three volumes and entitled the Cheap Repository (1795-98). These tracts, like her other works, reflect a concern with the betterment of society.

Wealth and economic well-being, we have asserted, are the fruits of freedom, while we should have been the first to know that this kind of "happiness" has been an unmixed blessing only in this country, and it is a minor blessing compared with the truly political freedoms, such as freedom of speech and thought, of assembly and association, even under the best conditions. back to page 1 More Women's Quotes: A B C D ... English author. In 1774 she went to London and made the acquaintance of Dr Johnson, Edmund Burke, and the leaders of the bluestocking coterie. She wrote two plays for David Garrick Percy 1777, an artificial and introspective work which finds an outlet for emotional intensity in tragic action, and The Fatal Secret 1779. After Garrick's death, however, she decided that play-going was immoral and led a retired life mainly among clergymen and philanthropists. She started Sunday schools in Cheddar and organized a movement that led to the formation of the Religious Tract Society 1799. She wrote Coelebs in Search of a Wife 1809 and a tract, The Shepherd of Salisbury Plain , among many other religious works. She left her fortune to charities and religious institutions.

An English authoress best known in her own day for the Search After Happiness , a pastoral drama, and Percy and The Fatal Secret , both tragedies. In a letter to Robert Aiken, dated 2 nd April 1786, Burns mentioned having inscribed a stanza, beginning 'Thou flat'ring mark of friendship kind' in a 'blank leaf of Miss More's works', presented to the author by a lady. One of the quatrains possibly reflects Burns's opinion of Miss More's qualities: "She show'd her taste, refin'd and just,
