Dark clouds race above the jagged cypresses along the crest of the hill of Monte Parioli across the Tiber River. Puddles of water on the terracotta terrace of his apartment reflect the swiftly changing colors and moods of a Rembrandt Roman sky that forms a continuity with the somber natural light of the intimate salon. The restless artist uncoils carefully from the deep couch like a jungle lion after its noonday nap, circles a stuffed chair, prowls along a wall, adjusts a tribal mask and a book on a shelf, and spins around cat-like before settling back down to his favorite spot in the couch corner.

Today, as in 1929, it is impossible to remain indifferent to centennial Alberto Moravia, the forerunner of European existentialist writers. The man of letters and always a man of his times, Moravia has many admirers; also those who admire him less nonetheless recognize his prominent place in Italian letters of the twentieth century and in the world of literature. Whatever the opinion, Moravia the man, the writer and world traveler, is fascinating, enigmatic, courageous and controversial. There is a misconception that Moravia simply exploits popular themes of sex and wealth. For most Italians his literature is still synonymous with sex. He did write about both, which for him the artist are the two fundamental criteria for an interpretation of existence and social reality, the principle measures of a society that rejected the traditional moral standards inherited by his generation. In his over 50 books Moravia zeroes in on the absurdity of the world he lived in. Sex was the symbol of his work.

  • Moravia, Alberto 1907-1990
(Born Alberto Pincherle) Italian short story writer, novelist, essayist, critic, dramatist, translator, scriptwriter, travel writer, editor, and journalist.
    INTRODUCTION
Moravia is considered one of the foremost Italian literary figures of the twentieth century. His depiction of existential themes, based upon mass indifference and the selfish concerns of the bourgeois world, predate the writings of Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus. Deeply informed by the theories of Karl Marx and Sigmund Freud, Moravia's work commonly focuses upon such subjects as politics, sexuality, psychology, phenomenological philosophy, and art. In his exploration of humanity's conceptions of reality, Moravia presents a world of decadence and corruption in which individuals are guided primarily by their senses and sex serves as a comfort for spiritual barrenness as well as a substitute for love.
    Biographical Information
Moravia was born in Rome and educated at home. His father was a moderately wealthy Jewish Venetian architect and painter. His mother was a Dalmatian Catholic. At eight, Moravia was stricken with tuberculosis of the bone, which left him bedridden and isolated during his adolescent years. He spent much of this time avidly reading and writing and achieved major success with his first novel

Moravia was married to fellow author Elsa Morante (1941-1963), best known for her novel LA STORIA (1974). "Alas, Fausta had told the truth: everything was left exactly as it had been on the day I went away. One seemed to be poking one's nose into the study of one of those long-dead writers whose rooms have been transformed into museums, which are visited by people reverently and hat in hand. Except that there was a difference: those writers whose rooms have been transformed into museums were for the most part real, genuine writers; or were, in their lifetime, sublimated artists of the first water, and their studies are faithful mirrors of their sublimation. I, on the contrary, am desublimated, and my study was clearly a museum of mediocrity, of approximation, of self-didactism, of foolish aspirations, of the near miss, of amateurishness."
