Shani Mootoo "Cultural bastards, Janet, cultural bastards. Dat is what we is." Biography S hani Mootoo was born in Ireland in 1958 and raised in Trinidad. She moved to Canada at the age of 19, where she began a career as a visual artist. A skilled multimedia artist and videomaker, she has had exhibitions in the U.S and Canada, and her videos have been shown at a number of film festivals. Mootoo has said that she has gravitated to the visual most of her life, because as a child, when she told her grandmother of the sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of an uncle, she was told never to say those words again. So, in different ways, I found it safer not to use words and started making pictures. Finally acknowledging and naming her experience of abuse prompted Mootoo to return to words, and write her first collection of short stories. Her first book, Out on Main Street , published in 1993, is a collection of short stories. Her second book, Cereus Blooms at Night , published in 1996, is her first novel. Major Themes M ootoo's experience as a multiple migrant - an individual whose family has traversed the cultures of India, Ireland, England and Trinidad - and as an immigrant in Canada, emerge as central themes in her work. In 1989, after participating in both individual and group counselling, Shani made the courageous decision to confront sex offenders with her personal story at the Stave Lake Correctional Centre. I interviewed Shani in her home on May 13 and asked her to relate the steps in her healing process. Q: What prompted you to begin to explore your childhood sexual abuse? A: That was in about 1982 and I started to actually deal with the abuse in therapy in 1988/89. Between that time I was in a few different relationships and I noticed a pattern; that I was getting involved with people who were really abusive towards me in one way or the other. Then I fell in love with someone who wouldn't abuse me and I tried to provoke different instances of abuse because otherwise it was really uncomfortable. It was as if I really don't deserve this love, or to be treated well. My partner at the time was the only person I had spoken with about the abuse. She said to me, "You have to start dealing with your abuse. It's really affecting the way you sort of give me all the power." I would set up situations where she ended up being the bad person and I ended up being the victim. It was like this dreadful little dance that we kept getting into and it was meant to hold us together, but with her age and wisdom she was able to see what was going on and say, "I'm not playing this game, you'd better do something." At that time she was actually studying to be a therapist.
