And his first novel has featured in an extensive book group discussion book group read Moore is often celebrated for his portrayal of female characters, particularly in his 1953 debut The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne , and his 1976 Booker shortlisted novel . But his sixth novel I am Mary Dunne (1968) is the first which the narrative is an uninterrupted internal monologue by a woman. As a result it has greater unity than some of his earlier books, but is less strongly plot driven. Light Years She was born Mary Dunne in Canada but has been married three times, and has been Phelan, Bell and now Lavery, a New Yorker. Little wonder then that at the beginning of the book, Mary momentarily forgets her name. The rest of the book describes the events of the rest of that day, cut with the background which she believes brought her to where, and who, she is. the Mary fears that she has so long been defined as an adjunct to someone else that she no longer has an identity of her own.

Gazette. He later moved to the United States and was a longtime resident of Malibu, Calif., although he maintained Canadian citizenship. While his novels are often concerned with people who are capable of hypocrisy and self-delusion, a comic vein runs through them. In clear, precise prose, Moore sets his beautifully drawn, isolated characters against a world marked by provincialism and religiosity. Moore's fiction has never been enormously popular, but it is strongly admired by other writers and a devoted group of readers. His novels, each of which is strikingly different in plot, setting, and historical period, include The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne The Luck of Ginger Coffey The Great Victorian Collection Black Robe Lies of Silence The Statement (1996), and The Magician's Wife (1998). Several of his works were made into films. He also wrote under the name Michael Bryan.

Date Added: Sept. 7, 2001 Last Updated: Sept. 7, 2001 Even the most touching of stories becomes more touching when associated with tragedy. The story of Brian Moore's tragic death is true and accurate, but he did not write "The Room." About this story - I have some background on the author that I thought you might be interested in. Procrastinating as usual, 17-year-old Brian Moore had only a short time to write something for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes meeting. It was his turn to lead the discussion so he sat down andwrote. He showed the essay, titled "The Room" to his mother, Beth, before he headed out the door. "I wowed 'em." he later told his father, Bruce. "It's a killer. It's the bomb. It's the best thing I ever wrote." It also was the last. Brian's parents had forgotten about the essay when a cousin found it while cleaning out the teenager's locker at Teays Valley High School. Brian had been dead only hours, but his parents desperately wanted every piece of his life near them - the crepe paper that had adorned his locker during his senior football season, notes from classmates and teachers, his homework. Only two months before, he had handwritten the essay about encountering Jesus in a file room full of cards detailing every moment of the teen's life. But it was only after Brian's death that Beth and Bruce Moore realized that their son had described his view of heaven. "It makes such an impact that people want to share it. You feel like you are there." Mr. Moore said.

HELP BRIAN DOUBLE HIS CAMPAIGN DONATIONS BY QUALIFYING FOR MATCHING GOVERNMENT FUNDS.
GIVE TODAY! TIME IS LIMITED! Brian needs to raise a minimum of $5,000 from 20 states to qualify for federal matching funds in Election 2008. In order to qualify for these matching government funds the minimum requirement is for our campaign to raise $5K from at least 20 states. An additional dollar will be given by the federal government for each dollar raised, anywhere in the country, not just in the 20 states... (i.e. $100K raised plus $100K federal matching funds; $125K raised plus $125K federal matching funds; or possibly $150K raised will gain another $150K in federal matching funds, thereby totaling $300,000 for the campaign!). Start your state's efforts to meet its goal! Even if your state does not achieve the $5,000 level, if we do in other states, then your donations will still be doubled because of our qualification status. Please click on the "Donate button in the menu above to access Brian's "Donate" page to pay with a credit card, or mail your check to the address listed on our "donate" page. Thank you!
