W roku otrzymał propozycję pracy w wydawnictwie New Worlds na stanowisku redaktora naczelnego, kt³rą przyjął. Do jego najwybitniejszych książek z tego okresu należy zaliczyć "The War Hound" i "World's Pain", a także nowele z serii "Between Wars" nawiązujące do holokaustu II wojny światowej. Ostatnio Moorcock powr³cił do pisania bardziej na gruncie fantastyki, mimo że jak sam m³wi, nie przepada za SF i nie lubi środowiska fan³w. Pod względem światopoglądowym uważa się za anarchistę.

In that role, he fostered the New Wave of science fiction, a conscious attempt to apply more literary techniques to the field and move beyond the standard tropes and patterns. In short, he's experienced, opinionated, and has a history of skepticism towards received wisdom. is a collection of essays on romantic fantasy (in the old definition of "romance"), particularly the sort where the author invents his own world. Epic fantasy, in other words. Moorcock is clear about not offering a definition or a comprehensive survey. What he offers instead is a discussion of several important elements (setting, character, humor), some history, a discussion of trends and directions, and an essay on why he's not fond of the work of the Inklings (Lewis, Tolkien, and Williams). He closes with a variety of short book reviews of what he considers some of the best epic fantasies. Stylistically, he's given to long quotes to illustrate his points. This made for a slow start for me, since the early chapters quote extensively from early romantic fantasies where the language requires close attention. He's also prone to a flurry of references that are harder to follow when I'm familiar with only a small portion of the works. I wish he'd provided more of an introduction for the less experienced reader and taken a bit more time to explain the quotes he chose and how they support his thesis. Particularly when comparing writing style, I'm not quite a good enough reader to get more than a glimmering of his point from pure example, and it's rare that he picks apart a piece of prose to show the reader his logic. I missed the detailed examinations done by, for example

Michael Moorcock
Cartographer of the Multiverse
Born in London in 1939, Michael Moorcock has had an important influence in fantasy and science fiction since the '60's. He started out at the age of fifteen as editor of the Tarzan Adventures magazine, eventually being thrown off the magazine for trying to publish too much prose (it was supposed to be a comic strip magazine). After this he began selling stories to the Science Fiction and Fantasy magazines of the time, coming up with the Eternal Champion; a figure which has appeared throughout most of his fiction. When Moorcock was offered editorship of New Worlds he was already a successful writer with the Elric character, his most famous creation, under his belt. He took New Worlds, a traditional SF magazine filled with space ships and sword fights, and turned it into a vehicle for the '60's alternative culture as well as pathing the way for modern contemporary fiction. Publishing authors such as JG Ballard and Brian Aldiss who went on to further mainstream success. This lead to a period during the 1980's where Moorcock concentrated on more literary works and less on the more fantastic novels. That is not to say that he ignored fantasy altogether, with brilliant works such as The War Hound and the World's Pain. He wrote The Brothel in Rosenstrasse, a novel of erotomania, and then plunged into the Between the Wars sequence of novels, a series set in the earlier parts of this century looking at the events that lead to the Holocaust, following the adventures of an unreliable and untrustworthy Russian emigrate who stumbles from situation to situation in an increasingly disturbing world.
