Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
I just finished a great book called Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery. It is the first out of eight novels by Lucy Maud Montgomery.
In it, Anne, an unattractive eleven-year-old orphan full of imaginings and spunk, is mistakenly brought to Avonlea. Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert of Green Gables didn't want her; they wanted a boy. However, Matthew took a liking to Anne and convinced Marilla to let her stay. The book is about Anne growing up on Prince Edward Island.
Anne is a dreamer with a history of getting herself (and friends) in trouble. Marilla is a cross woman who follows the rules and traditions. Matthew is a shy, kind man who is hard to coax out of an idea once he grasps onto it. Diana is a beautiful girl with an imagination like Anne's and a heart of gold.
I liked the book, overall. Lucy Maud Montgomery's writing was funny, light and engaging. She kept me interested throughout the story.
If you see Anne of Green Gables on a shelf, check it out for a good read!

L.M. Montgomery (1874-1942), one of Canada's most famous authors, is the subject of a virtual exhibit entitled "Picturing a Canadian Life: L.M. Montgomery's Personal Scrapbooks and Book Covers" that will be online from August 30, 2002, through August 2007 at http://lmm.confederationcentre.com and http://www.virtualmuseum.ca. This virtual exhibit, created in partnership with the Virtual Museum of Canada (VMC), is the first online exhibit hosted by the Confederation Centre Art Gallery. Everyone is invited to go to http://lmm.confederationcentre.com on August 30, at noon (Atlantic daylight time) to view the exhibit and a live webcast of the launch. Internationally-renowned Montgomery scholar Dr. Elizabeth Rollins Epperly, curator of the exhibition, wrote a 40,000-word script that accompanies almost 800 images from Montgomery's personal scrapbooks and book covers, many of which have never before been seen by the public. Video and interactive components on the site help viewers to explore how Montgomery used her imagination to collect, create, and inspire images of Canadian life. By drawing on five archival and museum collections, the exhibit is significant in terms of size and content.

Anne of Green Gables are drawn from her happy memories of the island and the farmhouse where she was brought up. She was an avid reader and was always writing poems and short stories. Her first published work, a poem, appeared in the local paper when she was just fifteen. After school and university she became a teacher, always continuing with her writing. When she was asked to contribute a short story to a magazine, she dusted off an idea for a plot she had jotted down when she was much younger, and turned it into Anne of Green Gables , one of the most popular books ever written. Lucy said about the book: Lucy married a Presbyterian minister in 1911 and moved with him to Toronto. She continued to set her stories on

The L.M. Montgomery Collection has become an essential national repository for Montgomery studies. This collection, which features primary and secondary sources, began in 1981 with the purchase of Montgomery's diaries (1889-1942) and scrapbooks from her son, Dr. E. Stuart Macdonald, who also served as her literary executor. Shortly after his death, additional materials were purchased from the estate, and in 1997, the manuscript of Rilla of Ingleside, thought to have been lost, was donated to the Library. The collection is extensive and diverse, serving the needs of literary scholars, historians, and manyresearchers. At its center are Montgomery's journals which consist of ten legal-size written volumes and unpublished, edited typescripts. Four of her scrapbooks, covering the years 1910 to 1936, provide additional information on her activities and interests while a fifth contains newspaper reviews of her books. Both the scrapbooks and journals are illustrated with pictures, swatches and other memorabilia. The Montgomery papers comprise a selection of materials including the original manuscript of

TORONTO NEWS! TOWN KEEN TO SHARE SECRETS
"Long-time home of Green Gables author finally emerging from years of disrepair "
by Toronto Star Staff Reporter, Carola Vyhnak, Monday February 12, 2007 The author of the famous Canadian novel Anne of Green Gables , Lucy Maud Montgomery, was born at Clifton, Prince Edward Island, Nov. 30, 1874. She came to live at Leaskdale , north of Uxbridge Ontario, in 1911 after her wedding with Rev. Ewen Macdonald on July 11, 1911 in Prince Edward Island. Her three children were born at Leaskdale, and she wrote close to a dozen books while she was living in the Leaskdale Manse before the Macdonald family moved to Norval, Ontario in 1926. Maud died in Toronto April 24, 1942 and was buried at Cavendish, Prince Edward Island. Maud's husband Rev. Ewen Macdonald was in charge of 2 churches:
St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Leaskdale, and St. Paul's Presbyterian Church, Zephyr, now the home of the Uxbridge Historical Centre Curator, Allan McGillivray. Rev. Ewen Macdonald died in Toronto December 1943 and was buried at Cavendish, Prince Edward Island. Maud's mother, Clara Woolner MacNeil died when Maud was 21 months old. Maud's father, Hugh Montgomery, married Maud's step-mother, Mary Anne McCrae in 1887. Mary Anne had attended high school in Uxbridge. Sir William Mackenzie of railroad fame was her uncle, and thus he became Maud's step-grand uncle.

L(ucy) M(aud) Montgomery (1874-1942) Canadian writer, who became famous for her juvenile books, especially ANNE OF GREEN GABLES (1908) with its six sequels. The main character is a spirited, orphan girl, who finds a home with an elderly brother and sister. Montgomery produced more than 20 novels and other books. Anne of Green Gables was rejected by several publishers. She was 34 when it was finally accepted. "I'm pretty hungry this morning," she announced, as she slipped into the chair Marilla placed for her. "The world doesn't seem such a howling wilderness as it did last night. I'm so glad it's a sunshiny morning. But I like rainy mornings real well too. All sorts of mornings are interesting, don't you think? You don't know what's going to happen through the day, and there's so much scope for imagination." (from Anne of Green Gables Lucy Maud Montgomery was born in Clifton (now New London), Prince Edward Island. When she was two, her mother died of tuberculosis. Her father, who was a merchant, remarried, and moved away. Montgomery was raised by her maternal grandparents in Cavendish. The place was isolated and her childhood was not particularly happy: she grew up in an atmosphere of strict discipline and punishment for the slightest reason. She joined her father briefly in Prince Albert, but then returned to Prince Edward Island.
