Charles Montague, earl of Halifax
From LoveToKnow 1911
CHARLES MONTAGUE HALIFAX EARL OF (1661-1715), English statesman and poet, fourth son of the Hon. George Montague, fifth son of the first earl of Manchester , was born at Horton, Northamptonshire , on the 16th of April 1661. In his fourteenth year he was sent to Westminster school, where he was chosen king's scholar in 1677, and distinguished himself in the composition of extempore epigrams made according to custom upon theses appointed for king's scholars at the time of election. In 1679 he entered Trinity College, Cambridge, where he acquired a solid knowledge of the classics and surpassed all his contemporaries at the university in logic and ethics . Latterly, however, he preferred to the abstractions of Descartes the practical philosophy of Sir Isaac Newton ; and he was one of the small band of students who assisted Newton in forming the Philosophical Society of Cambridge. But it was his facility in verse-writing, and neither his scholarship nor his practical ability, that first opened up to him the way to fortune. His clever but absurdly panegyrical poem on the death of Charles II . secured for him the notice of the earl of Dorset, who invited him to town and introduced him to the principal wits of the time; and in 1687 his joint authorship with Prior of the

The Hale, M'Hale, McHale Family Irish Immigrants from County Mayo, Ireland. to New Brunswick, Canada According to family lore and legend, supported to some extent by a biographical sketch given by Frederick Hale while he was in politics in Canada, ten Hale brothers emigrated from Ballina, County Mayo, Connaught, Ireland, to New Brunswick, leaving their parents and a sister, Mary, behind. The names of all ten brothers are not presently known. Their date of arrival at Saint John, New Brunswick, has not been found, nor is the name of the vessel on which they emigrated known. It would appear that all, or most, of the Hale brothers migrated eventually to the United States, with the exception of Martin, who settled in Carleton County, New Brunswick. The fragments of family information presented here are offered in the faint hope of attracting others who may be researching this Hale, M'Hale, McHale family, in order that the unknown brothers might be identified, along with their parents, and the descendants of all members of the family eventually found. Denis Hale settled in the Caribou, Maine, area and his descendants were still residing in that area in the 1980s. Denis married, 7 November 1833, Maria Dickinson, Carleton County Marriage records, Book 'A' page 8. Witnesses to the marriage were John Camber and John Campbell. Maria Dickinson was born 1 August 1796 and baptised at Woodstock on 11 June 1791, daughter of Arden Dickinson, a Loyalist, and his wife, Sarah, daughter of Tamberlain and Hester (Cunnabell) Campbell. She was a sister of Huldah, Martin Hale's wife.

Life After Scandal - Hampstead Theatre
First draft - Written for CultureWars.org.uk
Robin Soans hit verbatim gold in 2005 with his edited collection of interviews Talking to Terrorists . It was showing at the Royal Court on 7/7, and what had been relevant drama became urgent, required viewing. Its level-headed compassionate inquiry became a vital corrective to the media hysteria that followed in the aftermath of the bombings. His new play Life After Scandal , perhaps inevitably, lacks any such immediacy and punch.
Who Wants To Be a Millionaire?
Guardian
This suggestion is rather punctured by the fact that virtually every scandal-struck interviewee is at least very upper-middle class, if not actually aristocracy, while the press are uniformly presented as cockerney oiks en masse and, when interviewed, are clearly from less privileged backgrounds than their targets - giving the overall impression that all scandal reporting is an elaborate form of class war being waged against our rulers by a bunch of ill-bred, uppity proles. Ultimately, however, despite the interesting subject matter and, no doubt, good intentions, Life After Scandal is too polite to make enough noise to hit any big targets.
