Moliere DVD Review
By Prairie Miller
A visual and dramatic delight, Laurent Tirard's Moliere is the most recent of a series of biopics on the French actor and playwright who revolutionized theater. Set vividly and buoyantly in the period detail of 17th century Paris, Moliere not only recounts the life of this extraordinary creative mind, but playfully inhabits his witty, charming and complex personality that in a manner that renders Moliere mysteriously fascinating and immersed in the sensibility of his time, yet fully , enchantingly accessible to cross-cultural audiences today. Romain Duris is Moliere, also known as Jean-Baptiste Poquelin, who changed his name due to the scandalous reputation of actors back then, and the disgrace he might bring to his widowed shopkeeper father. The film inventively weaves together personal reflections and events in Moliere's own life with episodes from his stories, and with one always spontaneously and vivaciously complementing the other. Moliere and his rag tag theater troupe are riddled with debt, and that's not his sole concern. The audience back then, not unlike today, craves lowbrow comedy, while Moliere yearns to be a serious playwright and actor focused on creating profoundly felt tragedy instead. But his serious efforts on stage precipitate scorn and ridicule in the far from reticent spectators. Frustrated in his artistic aspirations and pursued by creditors, he accepts an offer he seems unable to refuse, to assist a dim-witted, wealthy provincial textile merchant Jourdain (Fabrice Luchini) in wooing a ravishing aristocratic widow behind his own lovely wife Elmire's back (Laura Morante) by helping him write a romantic play to present to the secret object of his desire. In return, Jourdain offers to pay off the troupe's debt, but if Moliere does not comply, the buffoonish bourgeois will have him sent to debtors prison.

Moliere
French Playwright
Moliere is considered the world's greatest writer of comedies. Many of his plays have also been translated for performances in English theatres, giving him a considerable reputation abroad. Moliere, whose real name was Jean Baptiste Poquelin, was born in Paris. He studied with the Jesuits at the College de Clermont. In 1643 he embarked on a theatrical venture under the title of L'Illustre Theatre, which lasted for over three years in Paris. In 1658 he played before the king, and organized a regular theatre. From 1659 no year passed without at least one major dramatic achievement. His plays range from simple farce to very sophisticated comedy. They ridicule the weakness and foolish actions of the people of his time, and point up their false values. In 'Tartuffe' Moliere invented one of his famous comic types, that of a religious hypocrite. The play was so audacious that King Louis XIV, although he found it amusing, did not permit a public performance for five years, fearing that it would offend the powerful French higher clergy. Moliere died while playing the leading part of his last play, 'The Imaginary Invalid'.

Moliere The Misanthrope The Miser The Physician in Spite of Himself Plays by Moliere ... Tartuffe (The Imposter) Introduction "Moliere" was the pseudonym Following his return to Paris in 1658 he gained immediate notoriety by playing Corneille’s Nicomede before the King followed by a farce. The King was to employ him in 1665, however. Moliere was himself the main draw for his plays and he seems to have been a splendid actor who was a disciple of Scaramouche and moreover could twist his face into any contorted shape. Of his characters, Tartuffe in Tartuffe (The Imposter) (1664-7) is one of the dramatist’s finest figures: a sensual individual who masks himself as an ascetic but must finally reveal himself for what he is. The School for Wives (1662) was also a popular success, telling of a man who gives his wife no education so that she will not be unfaithful and is straight comedy. In The Misanthrope (1666) there is an ambiguity in the very comedy of the central character Alceste; while in The Miser (1668) Moliere steers away from farce and depends on the incongruous and the absurd. His final play

Molière [mohl-yair'] (1622-1673) , French actor and comic dramatist wrote a number of enduringly successful plays including Amphitryon (1668) and Tartuffe "What! Would you make no distinction between hypocrisy and devotion? Would you give them the same names, and respect the mask as you do the face? Would you equate artifice and sincerity? Confound appearance with truth? Regard the phantom as the very person? Value counterfeit as cash?" from Tartuffe , Cléante, act 1, sc. 5 Some say Molière's most brilliant and controversial play is Tartuffe which was met with much outrage and censure by the church. "As the purpose of comedy is to correct the vices of men, I see no reason why anyone should be exempt." from the preface of the 1669 version. Satirising hypocritical figures, lampooning academic pretentiousness and even specifically integrating his detractors into his scripts won Molière wide acclaim for his neoclassical French comedies. To this day Molière's works continue to hold sway in the theatre world and many of his works have inspired adaptations to film including the French 1984 version "Le Tartuffe" starring Gérard Depardieu.
