William Ormond Mitchell was born in 1914 in Weyburn, Saskatchewan. While, like many of his most memorable characters, he did grow up on the Canadian prairies, he also spent four of his teenage years going to school in California and Florida in order to recover from a childhood case of tuberculosis. Returning to Canada in 1931, Mitchell studied philosophy and psychology at the University of Manitoba for three years. After his studies were interrupted by a recurrence of his childhood illness, Mitchell wnet on to work in a variety of jobs, first in Seattle and later in Calgary. It was also at this time that he began to take his writing very seriously. In 1940, W.O. Mitchell enrolled at the University of Alberta where he continued his undergraduate studies, receiving a BA and teaching certificate in 1943. It was also in Edmonton that he met and married his wife, Merna Hirtle, with whom he eventually had three children. Mitchell's undergraduate years at the University also brought him into contact with another person who would be a great influence in his life, Professor F.M. Salter. Salter, a creative writing instructor at the University, helped Mitchell hone his craft and later, in 1942, arranged for the publication of three of Mitchell's short stories.

    W. O. Mitchell was born in Weyburn in 1914, and lived there throughout most of his early life, except for several years spent in the southern U.S. fighting his case of tuberculosis. After 1930, he attended the University of Manitoba, but his studies were cut short by a recurrence of TB. He thereafter worked in several cities at a wide variety of jobs, and began to work seriously at writing. In 1940 he enrolled at the University of Alberta, and received his B.A. and teaching certificate. He met his wife Merna there, and had three of his stories published before he began teaching high school in small towns in Alberta. In 1947, his first novel, Who Has Seen the Wind , was published: it met with immediate popularity and critical acclaim which allowed him to devote himself entirely to writing. In 1948 he moved to Toronto to become the fiction editor at Maclean's magazine. At this time he wrote the hugely popular Jake and the Kid series for CBC Radio, which continued over eight years and 320 episodes. In 1951, he moved to High River, Alberta, where he continued to write the radio series along with his other works. He released two novels and several plays over the next 17 years. Between 1968 and 1988 he wrote another four novels and several dramatic works as he taught creative writing at Canadian universities. Mitchell is reviewing a composition submitted by one of the students. Saskatchewan Archives Board R-B6144 William Ormond Mitchell is best remembered for Who Has Seen the Wind and the Jake and the Kid stories which grew out of and defined the Saskatchewan prairie. He was born on March 13, 1914, in Weyburn. Two events in his early life indelibly marked him and, he claimed, made him a writer. When he was seven his father died, and his memory of this event was the genesis for his first novel, Who Has Seen the Wind The Vanishing Point From 1931 to 1934, he studied philosophy at the University of Manitoba. After two years taking courses in journalism and play writing at the University of Washington, he landed in Alberta in the middle of the Depression. For the next four years he survived by selling magazine subscriptions, encyclopedias, insurance and radio advertisements, even doing a high-dive clown act for a carnival. He completed his BA at the University of Alberta, obtained a teaching certificate, and began writing seriously. His first two published short stories in

THE classification of Candida albicans into two serological groups on the basis of agglutination tests was first reported by Hasenclever and Mitchell , and both in the original and subsequent papers these authors and their colleagues referred to group A and group B strains. The findings were confirmed by me using a double-diffusion method, and, for the sake of conformity, similarly using the word 'group' with reference to the serological division within the species. Nevertheless, it must be apparent that this terminology is not consistent with that relating to the serological classification of other microbiological species such as Pneumococcus and Haemophilus influenzae , where the word 'type' is employed, and that confusion may arise if the word 'group' is used to describe not only an antigen (group antigen) which is common to more than one species of a particular genus, but also the serological division within a species.

Sometimes years must pass before a classic, more particularly a Canadian classic achieves recognition. Happily this has not been the case with Who Has Seen the Wind , a re-creation of prairie boyhood that has been celebrated since its first appearance in 1947. The well-loved story of Brian O'Connal's early youth and of his growing awareness of pain, death and sorrow as well as of the richness and beauty of life that brings him to the brink of young manhood, has mellowed gracefully with the years. The present handsome edition is doubly to be treasured in that it has been illustrated by another son of the prairies, the notable Canadian artist William Kurelek. Eight full-page plates, as well as numerous pen-and-ink drawings, are worthy of a book that belongs in every library collection. Joan McGrath, Board of Education for the City of Toronto. Toronto, Ont.

The Role of the Ideal Citizen: W.O. Mitchell's Who Has Seen the Wind BreeAnne Robertson One of the founding messages in W.O. Mitchell's Who Has Seen the Wind is that the ideal citizen must help bridge the gap between the dialectical tension of rural and urban environments; between society and the vast Canadian prairie. This connection is in attempt to find harmony within oneself and the world one lives in. In Mitchell's novel, the protagonist Brian leads the reader in and around his Saskatchewan town, allowing glimpses into the lives of the people who live there and the place they all share. Throughout Brian's growth, he learns a little every day. Both the natural world and the civilized world serve as tools to guide Brian to discover what he longs to understand: the "ultimate meaning of the cycle of life" and one's role within it (Mitchell preface). Brian, who is only four at the beginning of the novel, struggles to find clarity in his young life: Men do not understand how a thing which is torn in different directions comes into accord with itself ñ harmony in contrarityÖ. HERACLITUS. (Grace 117) Brian wants answers, and in his quest to find them, he is consistently confused and bombarded by the contradicting forces around him. He wants to know what is right: in terms of both plain accuracy, but also in terms of what feels right inside his young soul. The two most influential powers are the prairie and the town, and the people who inhabit both.
