-A Fine Balance A Fine Balance is set in an unnamed Indian cityI guess it's supposed to be Bombayin 1975. It centers around the unlikely living arrangements of four characters who are forced by their strained economic circumstances to share an apartment. Dina Dilal is a widower who has spent her life trying to escape her abusive and domineering brother, in a society where independent women are, to say the least, not the norm. The apartment represents her attempt to maintain her freedom, but she can not afford the rent on her own. She is first convinced to take in a fellow Parsi as a boarder, Maneck Kohlah, whose parents have sent him to the city from his beloved Himalayan hill country so that he can earn a degree. Then she hires two tailors to do piece work, Hindus whom she allows to live in the apartment : Ishvar Darji and his seventeen-year-old nephew, Omprakash. Ishvar is devoted to the task of finding his brother's son a wife. Despite their disparate backgrounds, the four develop into something like a family, as they lean on each other in the face of financial hardship, personal troubles, and political turmoil. The lives of a cast of colorful charactersincluding the local Beggarmaster, a guilt ridden rent collector, a hair collector who takes his work a tad too seriously, and even a litter of nearly feral catsbecome intertwined with those of the principles, providing an unusually detailed and richly textured portrait of a community of the urban poor.

Siddharth Singh Siddharth Singh is a lost soul of sorts. Born of parents afflicted by wanderlust, he spent most of his nineteen years in Pakistan, USA and Southern Africa, and the Himalayas. A student of Statistics at Hindu College, Delhi University, his aim in life to be stinking rich, but with style. His favorite quote is "I used to be an atheist till I realised I was God." So under no circumstances should he ever be taken too seriously as a literary critic. Read him at your own risk. Book Title: Fine Balance
Author: Rohinton Mistry
Publisher: Vintage
Pages: You think you've read about it all. You think you've heard about it all. Every newspaper, every magazine, even your local historian or relative has a story to tell about it. I'm talking about the Emergency. That bleak period in the tapestry of Indian democracy, when a megalomaniac politician took over the country and for two years ruled the country with an iron fist. A dismal episode, when thousands were jailed, and many more were forcibly sterilized under the Family Planning Scheme. And when you think you've heard enough, along comes this book that hits you in the face. I had heard of Rohinton Mistry, and I had heard effusive praise for his Booker nominated work, "Such a Long Journey". I had heard of his panoramic vistas, his depth of feeling and his masterful story telling.

Family Matters by Rohinton Mistry
In Family Matters by Rohinton Mistry, Nariman Vakeel is a 79-year old widower in Bombay who was already suffering from Parkinson's Disease when he falls and breaks his ankle. Bedridden and unable to care of even his basic needs, his care initially falls to his stepdaughter Coomy, who just wants to be rid of him. She foists Nariman off on his daughter, Roxanna, and his arrival in the small apartment she shares with her husband and children creates a large stress on her family. Roxanna sees to all her father's needs while her husband, uncomfortable with the whole situation, seeks meaning to his life outside the home. A finalist for the 2002 Booker Prize, Family Matters explores themes of family, the reversal of care between generations as they age, and the thin line between middle class and poverty in modern India. The Boston Globe calls this "an emotionally satisfying, deeply moving novel." [read excerpt]

by Keily Oakes
BBC News Online entertainment staff Modern-day Bombay is the setting for this colourful novel about the lives of three generations of a Parsi family. Nariman Vankeer is the protagonist, to whom much suffering and hardship is attributed. As he reaches his 79th birthday, the effects of age dominate his and the family's every moment, in the same way as if there was a newborn baby in the house. Although wracked with Parkinson's disease, the cantankerous professor refuses to let his frailty stand in the way of some of the last pleasures in his life. Many of the minor characters are delightfully drawn
An accident leaves him incapacitated and more of a burden on his late wife's children by her first marriage, Jal and Coomy. Spinster Coomy is a bitter woman who sees Nariman's injury as another way to add more misery to her family, which started when he married her mother and made her so unhappy.
