(eReader.com) A Fine Balance by Rohinton Mistry About the Book
As Christina Nunez wrote in Atlantic, “[Mistry] has long been recognized as one of the best Indian writers; he ought to be considered simply one of the best writers, Indian or otherwise, now alive.” Twice short-listed for England’s prestigious Booker Prize, Rohinton Mistry was broadly introduced to American readers when A Fine Balance was an Oprah Book Club selection in 2001.
Rohinton Mistry has not lived in his native India for many years; but like many expatriate writers, he continues a relationship with his country in his writings and has enriched his readers’ understanding of it. After emigrating to Toronto in 1975, Rohinton Mistry got a job as a bank clerk and ascended to the supervisor of customer service after a few years.
His dissatisfaction in the job led to his taking classes in English, first at York College, and ultimately pursuing a degree part-time at the University of Toronto.
Rohinton Mistry had no ambitions to be a writer until he got to Canada and began taking classes in literature at the University of Toronto. Encouraged by his wife, he set out to win a university literary contest by writing his first short story. He called in sick from work, devoted several days to the story, entered it, and won the contest.

    • UK By The Literator Saturday, 16 November 2002 There has never been a biography of Arthur Miller, author of Death of a Salesman and The Crucible. No doubt such an omission is due mostly to Miller's refusal to discuss his marriage to Marilyn Monroe, which he dealt with in his play After the Fall and his 1987 memoir Timebends. Now Faber has bought Arthur Miller: a life, by the award-winning American critic Martin Gottfried. Gottfried has interviewed the 87-year-old playwright often and has access to both papers and family. The book will examine Miller's life in full, including his years with Monroe and his human-rights advocacy. Having famously refused to testify before the House UnAmerican Activities Committee, Miller went on to champion writers silenced by repressive regimes around the world. Publisher: Penguin About the Book Set in mid-1970s India, A Fine Balance is a subtle and compelling narrative about four unlikely characters who come together in circumstances no one could have foreseen soon after the government declares a 'State of Internal Emergency'. It is a breathtaking achievement: panoramic yet humane, intensely political yet rich with local delight; and, above all, compulsively readable. Product Details Title:

Family Matters By Rohinton Mistry
Jacket: Paperback
Pages: 448 pages
Publisher: Vintage; (November 18, 2003)
Genre: Literary
ISBN: Comments about the author: Mistry wrote his first short story, ' One Sunday ', in 1983, winning First Prize in the Canadian Hart House Literary Contest (an award he also won the following year for his short story 'Auspicious Occasion'). It was followed in 1985 by the Annual Contributors' Award from the Canadian Fiction Magazine , and afterwards, with the aid of a Canada Council grant, he left his job to become a full-time writer.
Review: Purity, in fact, is central to the Parsi ethos. Parsis believe in keeping their race pure, and frown on intermarriage. Orthodox Parsis believe in excommunicating Parsis who marry outside of the clan. As more Parsi women marry later, if at all, and have fewer children, the Parsis face the danger of dying out. But Mistry does not only focus on the situation of Parsis. He is also frank about the problems plaguing India in general. He bravely tackles controversial issues: the trying circumstances; the poverty; the immense difficulty families face just to make ends meet; the failings of the political process.

Rohinton Mistry's magnificent new novel tells a story of familial love and obligation; of political and personal corruption; of memory's ability to keep truth alive, and the danger of memory denied. At once sweeping and intimate, comic and tragic, it is a kaleidoscopic, profoundly affecting saga.

Rohinton Mistry leaves US tour halfway
Ajit Jain in Toronto Novelist Rohinton Mistry is sick and tired of facing "unbearable" humiliation at the hands of US customs and so out of disgust he has cancelled his tour of America halfway. In the face of racial profiling following the September 11 attacks, "a brown skin and a beard are not a felicitous combination", he told the Globe and Mail daily. So, he told his publishers Alfred A Knopf, that he was fed up. The writer cancelled his tour to Chicago, San Francisco, Boston, Salt Lake city, Utah, Iowa City and Madison, Wisconsin. "He has been extremely unhappy about the way he has been treated in airports around the US in the first half of the tour," a representative of Alfred A Knopf was quoted as saying in the front-page report. "As a person of colour he was stopped repeatedly and rudely at each airport along the way... to the point where the humiliation for both he and his wife has become unbearable."

    Fine Balance - Rohinton Mistry
This is one book whose title is as misleading as they can ever be. It traces a part of life of Dina Dalal, a widow, Omprakash and his nephew, tailors who work for Dina and Maneck, a student and a paying guest at Dina's place....all during the Emergency period. Each one of them have had a miserable life and are trying to find contentment in those spouts of happiness that they share with each other.
There is also a beggar without legs, his beg master and a strange guy who collects hair.
